Russian troops have landed, via the BBC:

Quote:
Russian aircraft carrying nearly 2,000 suspected troops have landed at a military air base near Simferopol, senior Ukrainian official Sergiy Kunitsyn is reported by the AFP to have told Crimea's ATR television channel. Mr Kunitsyn says 13 Russian planes have landed with 150 people in each one.

Just protecting their assets around there, or something more sinister?

Things may have just gotten interesting.

Suspected troops? So, what, they could just as easily be a renegade Cirque du Soleil trope in a stolen gubment plane?

They're wearing what looks like Russian uniforms and weapons but there's no confirmation that they're actually Russian troops. Probably because nobody is stupid enough to go ask the angry men with machine guns where they're from and Russia hasn't given an official statement.

I dunno, people seem pretty irked about it. It's been going downhill all day there.

Didn't Russia announce they were doing war games exercise things near the Ukraine border?

Someone forgot to update the GPS.

All day? It's been going downhill for months and I doubt it's going to stop anytime soon.

I'm sorta hoping that Russia annexes it so I can get back to calling it "The Ukraine" without getting a bunch of stinkeye.

Clearly adversarial yet non-committal.

Sounds like someone would prefer to keep his options open at this point.

We should start with whichever little island Bjork lives on. In fact, I think all aggressive and defensive actions should start that way. Kind of like an Olympic torch ceremony.

There's gotta be some waiting to see what those troops are up to. I can't imagine Ukraine is really worth ending the world over anyway. As someone said (I did read it somewhere... Smiley: lol) Russia has for all intents and purposes annexed the region, and we're all waiting to see whether or not they intend to stay there.

Hmm...

Crimea's Supreme Council (parliament) has set up a "Berkut special-purpose detachment" for guarding public order, which "will be subordinated exclusively to the republican authorities", Crimean Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Temyrgaliyev is quoted by Unian as saying.

Russia just keeping access to airports and seaports from falling into the rebels hands and protecting pipelines servicing the EU.

America needs to calm its tits and let Russia fix another US @#%^ up. You can't just go around and encourage countries to have a coup when the government doesn't want to support your ideas (putting Anti Missle defense in Ukraine). Especially when you have no way to help them should they poke the wrong bear (Georgia remembers). Russia has made it clear in the past they will protect ethnic Russians regardless what borders they lie within. If this minority based rebellion starts ******** up East Ukraine Russia will drive home the point I imagine.

America won't do anything regardless. No president is going to get into a war with Russia over Crimea. Not Obama, not Bush, not McCain or Romney or Kerry or Clinton. Just like no president was going to get into a war with Russia over South Ossetia. Russia can do largely whatever it wants because Crimea isn't that important. It'd be nice if they didn't but not "shoot at Russian troops" nice and Putin knows that just as they knew it in Georgia.

Correct. Harsh language at worst. In the patrician vocal stylings of Messrs Kerry and Obama. What could be more terrifying?

Are functionally retarded? How is that a coup when a populace is on the verge of simply dying from hunger, cold and sniper bullets overthrows, for all practical purposes, a tyrant puppet. It is a revolution. The whole liberté, égalité, fraternité thing.

Orange revolution could have been called a coup. This is people being left without any real alternatives and choosing to say "@#%^ it, these guys do not represent us anymore." Good thing too, maybe it will give Poles some idea about how badly they were @#%^ed during the ill-famed round table and cut their politicians down to size.

Besides, Europe did not have a decent bloodbath in decades. I know ****** westerners like rdmCandie might need to see some blood to understand it.

Btw. I like that you read wikipedia to understand what has happened there, but ( do people still say dude? ), dude, do you really believe it was about protecting ethnic Russians? If so, I have a bridge I can sell cheap.

I could see a skipped summit or a postponed meeting or two if there's some widespread bloodshed. Maybe a couple of more ships in the Eastern Mediterranean. One of those "our missiles are bigger than yours" kind of things.

Russia has been trying to annex Crimea with mixed success for quite a while now. The possible outcomes currently are looking like 1. Partition of the Ukraine, with the euro side moving towards the EU, Crimea becoming nominally independent or being absorbed by Rus 2. Reinstatement of a puppet regime on the Russian or Euro side. It is unlikely that the EU will commit troops to fight another Crimean war, and Russia would probably commit to maintaining a puppet regime on it's side. I don't know if current leadership in Ukraine would allow their black sea access to be cut off in a partition deal to deescalate.

We shall see.

Or Russia puts this little Coup to rest, puts the democratically elected government back in power and America can find another way to get its Anti missile defense system into Eastern Europe because this hasn't worked the last 3 times they tried.
