Quote:
Using a piecewise regression analysis, we find that age-related slowing of within-game, self-initiated response times begins at 24 years of age.

Feel like you're slowing down yet? If so we can start over from the top while you catch up.

Quote:
We find no evidence for the common belief expertise should attenuate domain-specific cognitive decline. Domain-specific response time declines appear to persist regardless of skill level.

Being "good" at it won't save you, sorry.

Quote:
Finally, an exploratory analyses of other age-related differences suggests that older participants may have been compensating for a loss in response speed through the use of game mechanics that reduce cognitive load.

But hey you can compensate somewhat. Smiley: nod

Quote:
After 24, the expected slowing due to an additional 15 years of age amounts to about 15% of the speed enjoyed by professional players over bronze ones. That is, the effect of age, even in what most consider young adulthood, can be expected to offset a sizeable proportion of what has taken older players hundreds or even thousands of hours to achieve.

Even more good news...

Quote:
Experience nevertheless allows one to compensate for these declines indirectly. In our study, older players appear to hold their own despite their declines, perhaps by decreasing their cognitive load through the use of simplified strategies or improved use of the game interface.

Come to think of it I've standardized my keybinds across different classes and MMOs so there's less thinking involved and I can respond quicker... Smiley: glare

So are you an aging gamer finding yourself compensating?
Yes, no good kids these days rush everywhere and make a mess of things.:2 (12.5%)
No, I'm still as young and quick as I always was. Now where's my Viagra?:1 (6.2%)
I usually just drink until I can't tell the difference.:10 (62.5%)
I don't play video games.:0 (0.0%)
Your poorly thought out choices failed to capture the extent of my feelings on this subject.:3 (18.8%)
Total:16

Feel free to share thoughts, hints and tips. We're all in this together and willing to wait while you work through the mental lag.

The authors seem to suggest you'll slow down even if you don't play Starcraft 2, but they still need more money to study that and make sure it's true (TBH I think they just wanted to be paid to play Starcraft though). Be sure to check back, you might not be out of the woods yet. Smiley: wink

Good to know I am in bronze league because of my age and not because I suck!

Same, I don't play any competitive RTS nor Smash Bros Melee or any other game where actions per minute are as ridiculously high so it's not like I'd notice.

Brain lag is still lag.

I haven't noticed if I'm slowing down because I don't play many competitive games. About the only thing I ever play is TF2 and then I usually go medic so that's not an accurate indicator of anything. Also, I play on pub servers full of monkeys.

There's also the "I don't spend 12 hours a day playing this" factor; not that I doubt the possibility of some cognitive slow down but I don't have an accurate way to self-judge when playing against some kid with nothing else to do than hit the games all day.

My hands not as steady as it once was. I'm sure my response time has decreased, duh I'm old. I don't feel like my learning curve has really decreased much - maybe gaming has kept my mind sharp - hah. Knowing what you're doing, though, helps in all but the most competitive gaming.

I suppose the new fangled mouses that you can program in key sequences could help....if you can figure out how to use the darn things.

Edit - What Samira said.

Pretty much this. I've played them with friends and whatnot for fun, but playing online against folks who spend waaaaaaaaaay too much of their lives on those games? What's the point. I've never been a big fan of "twitch" games to begin with, and playing online more or less ends out being "guy who does this all day, every day, and has optimized his build, memorized the maps, has custom macros, programmable input mouse/joystick/whatever, and whatever else gives one an edge in such things wins", while I'm just some shmuck running "stock". Kinda not fun. And not much point really.

That and I need to periodically take my hands off the controls so as to take a drink of my alcoholic beverage.

Depends on the game. You'd be surprised how many mentally defective mouthbreathers are out there or people who assume the new weapon unlock must be used at all times when they'd honestly be better off running stock.

That said... depends on the game. TF2 is fun. L4D2 is full of 2serious4u people screaming about you doing it wrong for not having the map memorized.

Well, yeah. No amount of cool toys can fully compensate for just plain sucking. Smiley: nod

Never played Starcraft online though (other than say lan/wan with friends). Cause I've heard nightmare stories about it from folks who have (or have attempted to anyway). Ironically, one of the most fun multi-player-deathmatch type games I've played ended out being Descent2. Combination of 3d maps, full directional movement, and folks exploding into a cloud of goodies made it great fun.

I never could get into Starcraft or Warcraft.

Well, I enjoyed the sound clips from the games, but not really the games themselves.
