Yes this is news apparently.

1) Climb over fence
2) Pee in reservoir
3) ?????
4) International celebrity

Linky, because I apparently find out about local news by reading the BBC these days. Smiley: rolleyes

I'm not sure what I'm more surprised at, the fact this is news overseas or the fact they're actually draining the reservoir because of it. I mean that's why we have chlorine in the water yes? Besides 200ml of urine isn't going to go far in 38 million gallons of water. If it helps put it in perspective you can consider the amount of duck **** already in there. Not that we have a lack of water in this corner of the globe I suppose, but it still seems silly.

Because all threads need a poll...

Should they drain the reservoir?
Eww, yes that's gross.:1 (5.0%)
No, that's silly.:13 (65.0%)
Don't you people out west have anything better to do on a Wednesday night?:3 (15.0%)
Brb, I need to use the reservoir...:3 (15.0%)
Total:20

If the person had ebola virus, maybe.

Otherwise it seems really silly.

Maybe it's like one of those word problems you have in grade school?

If you have 3 people who were found by the reservoir with their pants down, and one was 18, how many 19 years olds something something...

Do they not treat/filter the water in Portland somewhere between source and faucet?

We're no different than anywhere else on that matter, stupid intrusive government rules. Smiley: glare

Oddly enough it'll turn into a bit of a thing here. The federal government was really pushing hard for us to cover those things years ago. Apparently having open air reservoirs means they're likely terrorist targets, and we were supposed to cover them at some point or lose federal funding for something or other. Hence there actually being a group called "Friends of the Reservoirs" that has an opinion on this matter. They've fought for years to keep them uncovered.

For the deer and bunnies to pee in? That photo didn't exactly look like a natural lake so much as an abandoned swimming pool.

Portland should just sell it to southern California. They can't afford to be picky about how much urine is in their water.

Bear Grylls factoid: If you're in the desert and you have no water you can drink pee to keep from dehydrating and dying!

I like this decision making process:

Probably just squirrels and ducks, maybe the occasional stray cat or something, it's a bit urban: pics. I think the argument is less about them being stunning, and more about them being less ugly then a concrete/metal building. Though I don't know, you'd think they could pretty them up somehow either way. But like most hilltop neighborhoods there's enough money there they've been able to press their case.

And we don't sell California our water, it costs way too much to ship it there. We just use the water to make electricity and send that their way when they can't make enough to power all those air conditioners they need to live in that desert; works much better.

ibme In before my edit

Bunnies and Deer don't typically pee in lakes - though their pee and **** could easily run-off into the lake. Domestic animals would be more likely to actually go in the lake.

When lake swimming as a little kid I'd pee when I started to get cold.

They need to put a fence around the Chicago reservoir to keep the urinating rabbits out.

If you just say it's to help keep out illegal immigrants I bet you can get a nice 12ft wall built.

There are so many things wrong with this dopey story. Where does the water that fills the reservoir come from? Runoff is certainly not USP Purified Water. And they're worried about a little ****? Those kids probably had plenty of alcohol in their urine to sterilize it anyway.

If your municipal leaders are simply pumping your water out of the reservoir directly into your home, then you have bigger problems to worry about. Get them out of office as soon as possible -- right after you install a water filter.

All water has to be treated before drinking. Just another way the fedral guvmint enslaves us with useless rules telling us how to live.

And by the way, guess what they drink up there at the International Space Station.

I have a strong notion that this story will make the weekly "Five stupid stories your Facebook friends believed" list on Cracked. There's got to be more to it than what's being presented.

My money is on "it's due for cleaning next week anyway, so let's just kill 2 birds with one stone."

Just for fun, some additional information from the local news:

Quote:
In 2011, eight million gallons of water were dumped from Mt. Tabor Reservoir Number 1 after a 22-year-old Molalla man admitted to urinating in it.

In that case, it cost the water bureau $32,700 rate-payer dollars to drain the reservoir, which caused a wave of backlash from many who said it was an unnecessary response.

Some complained that animals sometimes fall into the reservoir and die, without any such action taken.

In defending that 2011 decision, Shaff said, "I think part of it is just that general yuck factor of, 'Yes, we have birds on there all the time but we don't have people peeing in it all the time.'"

He added that if there was a drought occurring, he probably would've made a different decision.

There is a lake used for drinking water for a major city in BC that people are allowed to swim in. No pets though! I'm sure no one ever pees in it either. Can't remember the name of it at the moment, but I've swam in it.

For what its worth, portland Oregon gets enough rain that the reservoir in question should be full again 20 minutes ago.

I just wish they would build a damned cover for it already. They keep voting that measure down.

I can't remember if thats the reservoir they pulled the old rusted car out of, or if it was the other one.

Anyways, the idiot teenager may be part of the "occupy Mount Tabor" protest idiots.
