Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) is tossing around the idea of running for pres in 2016. He's a self-described Democratic Socialist.

Despite his bid for pres being a very long, long shot, what about this democratic socialism stuff?

This is Wiki's attempt at defining it....
Quote:
Democratic socialism is a political ideology advocating a democratic political system alongside a socialist economic system. This may refer to extending principles of democracy in the economy (such as through cooperatives or workplace democracy), or may simply refer to trends of socialism that emphasise democratic principles as inalienable from their political project.

There is no exact definition of democratic socialism. Some forms of democratic socialism overlap with social democracy, while other forms reject social democratic reformism in favor of more revolutionary methods, and overlap with Revolutionary Socialism.

A bit more ambiguous clarification...
NPR wrote:
Sanders is the only member of Congress who calls himself a Socialist. And if you're wondering how a Democratic Socialist differs from a Democrat, he'll point to the time he took to the Senate floor for eight and a half hours in 2010, railing against President Obama for supporting Bush-era tax cuts.

Bernie Sanders explanation, "It is essentially — bottom line — making government work for all of the people,"

This is a pretty wimpy definition, but for Sanders it seems to be about economic equality and representation of his constituency.

What do you think about Democratic Socialism?

Is it a counter to Tea-Partyism?

...and Sanders, can he make a respectable bid for president?

I always assumed Democratic Socialism to be akin to the system in Scandinavian countries. Socialism based around free elections and a democratic form of government.

Sanders has the same chance at becoming president as my cat does.

Your cat has a better chance than Ron Paul, too.

Mittens/Clinton 2016!

Following the Air Bud rule, there's nothing in the Constitution that says that the president can't be a cat...

It's laden with devil worship.

Elinda wrote:

Workplace democracy sounds like it'd make work a lot more like a political game, which I would find extremely annoying. I'd rather have some overpaid millionaire run the company than have to endure my co-workers voting on whether or not to re-assignment me to the accounting dept. The greater redistribution of wealth part would be about as popular as it is now.

Regardless, anything with the word "socialism" in it won't have enough support, ignoring the particulars. It's like saying you're an atheist. A complete no-go in this country.

Elinda wrote:

The only real counter to Tea-Partyism is a strong moderate voice, a strong far-left voice will only worsen the divide.

Elinda wrote:

I bet he can steal some disenchanted liberal votes away from the Green Party.

How is it different from Green Party? Last election, that's what the political position quiz told me I should vote for.

Wouldn't this be like what we see today in special interest groups that eventually only exist to justify their own existences? It seems like at a particular level of the division of responsibilities that you would only serve to either further fracture and divide the whole or else on the other end of the spectrum you have a top-layer group that is so far removed from caring about the rest of humanity that it can only lead to the destruction of the free-world..
It's a nice predicament.

The Greens put the environment in front of corporations. Democratic Socialists put average citizens in front of corporations.

Neither one of them likes the oligarchy system we have very much, but those two broad perceptions tend to color their specific tacks on policies. Say there is a proposal to dam a river to supply water to a business. The Dems and the DS party are more likely to protest it based on people's houses being eminent domain'd, whereas the Greens will be more likely to include protests based on habitat loss for endangered species (as well as the loss of houses.)

The Republicans will call them all anti-business hippies.

Most political scientists can't even agree on a definitive description so I'd be wary of any arm chair politico taking a swing at it.

Hey! My ears were ringing. Democratic Socialists are nutty people who have chosen to include the word "socialist" in their own label, thus proving that they are un-american and probably hate pie.

So how was that?

Ah, well Green was pretty much left of Democrats on every issue despite that distinction, so either way is fine with me.

I've come to the conclusion it doesn't matter if its a Republican or a Democrat in office they are just different shades of the same bullsh*t. They will all do about the same things with different reasons, they will lie and back out on promises. They will redirect your attention while they hide their skeletons.

It's honestly becoming a joke, I mean whats congresses approval? 13% I mean it is retarded, and we keep voting the same idiots back in. All because we allow big business and lobbyists to bribe donate to politicians.

And the big corporations, pulling the strings behind the scenes? They are considering moving out of country to avoid taxes, while trying to keep their grubby claws deep in Washington's pockets.

In the end it doesn't matter who runs for prez, a "Democratic Socialist" or any other side they are just different coats of paint on the same sh*t.
