I bought my libertarian friend a Ron Paul t-shirt from his campaign store for Christmas a few years ago. And ever since then I get e-mail requests for donations and other campaign messages. I haven't unsubscribed because it's kinda interesting to see what they're up to. So far the best one, by far, has been this one selling Ron Paul's homeschool "curriculum." Smiley: rolleyes

Quote:
Dear Patriot,

If you have children or grandchildren in the fifth grade or higher, and you have not yet signed up for my Ron Paul Curriculum homeschooling program, I have some exciting news!

The Ron Paul Curriculum is offering an online summer school refresher program for just $25!

The K-5th grade courses are always free of charge. I recommend you check them out and put the program to good use with your child this summer. It may be just what your child (or grandchild) needs to catch up, keep up, or pull ahead.

Normally, families pay $250 a year, plus $50 per course.

While you will still have to pay $50 per course, this deal provides you an opportunity to access the curriculum for three months for just $25.

You can help speed up your child's academic progress next fall by having your child take just one course and do three lessons a day, five days a week. That's about three hours in just one morning that will enable your child to take a year's course, if you continue in the curriculum.

There are no textbooks to buy with my curriculum and no extra fees.

One course is free for all students: the Academic Basics Course (ABC).

This course prepares your child for high school work, and it has enabled some students to raise their academic performance by one full grade point.

You can read more about it here.

For just $25, your child or grandchild can access a curriculum with materials prepared by some of the leading experts in their fields.

Your child can also interact with, learn from, and teach their peers through our student discussion forums. Student interaction helps them progress faster.

This summer school program is a good way to "test drive" my curriculum. It is also a way to inoculate your child against classroom liberalism next fall.

If you want your child’s education to include an introduction to the ideas of liberty, then you will be very interested in the course on government.

The first half of this course is taught by Dr. Gary North. Dr. North is a widely published expert in economics and history and was also a key member of my first congressional staff. The second half is taught by Dr. Tom Woods, New York Times bestselling author and senior fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute. It would be hard to find a better introduction to the freedom philosophy.

The course on personal finance is also a winner. It is taught by Dr. Timothy Terrell, who is not only an expert in finance, but, as the father of three teenagers, understands the challenges of teaching young people how to be financially responsible.

If you want to educate your child on the pitfalls of consumer debt, this is the course you have been looking for. You can find the details here.

My curriculum also features a course on public speaking, which is based on the world-renown Toastmasters International program. Learn more here.

For a list of all the courses, click here.

To sign up for the summer school curriculum (which comes with a 60-day, money-back guarantee), click here.

The Ron Paul Curriculum is designed to strengthen both child and parent alike in the message of liberty while providing a comprehensive education. I hope you’ll take advantage of this special opportunity to become involved in this program!

For Liberty,

Ron Paul

Grade Points are from 0-4. With the occasional 5 given for "advanced" courses, which varies by school. Roughly, 4 = A, 3 = B, 2 = C, 1 = D, 0 = Fail. My high school had Advanced Placement courses which if you earned an A in, gave you a 5 toward your Grade Point Average, allowing students to get above a 4.0

The University I went to graded on the 4.0 scale as well, but I don't recall any 5 point classes.

A 4.0 scale that is more or less equivalent to letters and is sometimes a 4.0 scale with bonus points making it a 5.0 scale but not really.

The letters are meaningless, just to relate to the old "I got an A!" for the students.

The 5.0 is just to try to reflect the difficulty of a class. That 100% you got in your Calculus class is worth a more than the passing grade you received in Wood Shop. My high school, all classes carried the same weight because they were all one credit hour.

I am not aware of a University that used the 5.0 scale (but there may be) instead classes had different weights because they had different total credit hours. GPA was sum of the (Grade Point * Credit Hours) for each course, divided by total Credit Hours. So a 4.0 in a class with 5 credit hours had more weight than a 4.0 in a 1 credit hour course.

Yeah, the 5pt for an AP course is a high school thing and is to reflect the advanced difficulty of the class. So someone who takes all AP core courses has a higher GPA than someone who gets all A's in their remedial courses. Also, you only get the extra boost if you get a C or better.

At the college/university level, the credit hours and having the higher level courses is its own reward.

As for the OP, I find it amusing to read that or to listen to Limbaugh talk about how he has to write historical fiction to teach the "real story" of the nation's founding. Elementary/Middle school history is pretty much eight years teaching American Patriotic Mythology as it is. And I'm not even really bothered by it but last I checked it was all still elevating the Pilgrims, Paul Revere, George Washington, Ben Franklin & Thomas Jefferson to demigod status and teaching how the pure virtues of liberty defeated the might of the British Empire.

...awarding winning!

If we just keep repeating the old stories, we can make them better each time. No need for any progressive stuff.

I remember how shocked I was to learn how marginal support was for the Revolution at the time. Something like 40% of the Colonials were averse to war altogether, or wanted more time to work things out with the British.

One of the more productive field trips I chaperoned with my kids was the annual trip to Boston where part of the day the kids spent at Faneuil Hall taking on the roles of rebels vs loyalist and re-enacting the debate that led to the Tea Party.

It forced the kids to take a look at the 'other side' and really question the justifications for forceful rebellion.

It's total BS. Why? There's no iPad app. It can't be a serious attempt to teach kids if it doesn't have an iPad app.

Also you people and your cheesy 5 point grade systems. We went up to 4.0 and that's the way it should be dagnamit. Don't need no extra frilly points just so people can feel better about themselves. Buncha hippy crap, that's what that is. Ain't right to punish someone for taking child care and home ec. No wonder kids are so screwed up these days! Smiley: motz

You can't average letters. Which is why points are assigned to them. Hence the term "grade point" (and "grade point average"). Not sure where the confusion came from aside from the usual need to find something "wrong" about what anyone on the right side of the political spectrum says. There's enough nuttiness from the Paulite's that one does not need to work hard finding a problem with something as well established as a grade point.
