Is that really the sort of thing you petition for? "Petition to have firefighters stop my house from burning", "Petition to have my trash collected every Tuesday", "Petition to have air traffic controllers control air traffic"...
That's why I said "if you feel the desire to say you did something." It's the literal least you could do aside from doing nothing. It'll accomplish the same exact thing, but you can be smug about it, if you really want.

I'm not razzing you about it, just the petition in general. It's as though they assume the reason no one has been arrested is because enough people haven't asked.

Yeah, I know. I also signed it anyway just so no one could say I didn't and was thus in favor of death threats.

It's an online petition though, which is pretty much the best way to not get what you're petitioning for.
Yes, but you get internet points.

Well...honestly that is a very important factor in how law enforcement works in the US. The mistake is thinking an online petition will raise the profile enough for someone to work the case.

Don't think I won't razz you, too, Smasharoo. You've been treading a thin line recently, you know. A lot of people say you're overdue for a razzing - and then you'll rue the day you did all those razz-worthy things that you did.

Speaking of Bullying and Gamergate: Totalbiscuit's running a fundraiser for the Pacer Center. Or he's joined in with someone else running one. It's past my bedtime, give me a break on the details. I'm only up because I wanted to see if there were any details on how his surgery went on Twitter.

Quote:
"I think we all need to look at ourselves and ask a question. "Have we bullied someone?". The immediate answer may be "of course not, I would never do that!" but think a little harder, are you absolutely sure? Bullying is far broader than shoving a kid into a gym locker, bullying is about abusing your power to subjugate another individual and the key component of that is to break down the victim psychologically. "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" is perhaps one of the most incorrect and harmful things you can try to drill into a child. Words have power. Bruises of the body heal but bruises of the mind can endure for life and shape you as a person, often for the worse. So, have you bullied someone? I know I have. I was bullied at school and yet when I gained a modicum of power online, I used it against people I disagreed with. Sometimes it was justified, but sometimes it could be considered bullying. Did I really need to wield my influence as a cudgel to beat some random dude on the internet with?

No, I didn't. As my audience has grown my awareness of the power of social media and my influence has with it and I realised, I have done some really terrible things in the past and I need to try not to do those things anymore. Sadly some people don't realise that. They wield their followings as a weapon against people they disagree with. These fully grown adults that should know better, excuse themselves by saying "pfft, it's only twitter" or "pfft, it's the only the internet", not realising the crushing hypocrisy of doing so while simultaneously condemning online harassment. I'd call on everyone to take a little time to reflect on your own actions. Stopping harassment starts with you. It's probably too late for our generation but perhaps with proper education, future generations will eventually end up being more excellent to one another. I hope so. As it stands, all we can really do is try to suck just a little less today as people. Thanks for reading." - John Bain.

"Founded in 2006, PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center actively leads social change, so that bullying is no longer considered an accepted childhood rite of passage. PACER provides innovative resources for students, parents, educators, and others, and recognizes bullying as a serious community issue that impacts education, physical and emotional health, and the safety and well-being of students."

Raising awareness and aid to benefit the National Bullying Prevention Center. Bullying continues to be a serious issue among children and teens. In recent years, bullying has spread from the realm of playgrounds and classrooms to Facebook and chatrooms. In our youth, many of us turned to video games coping mechanism to escape from those feelings upon coming home. However, we recognize that the solution isn't hiding from the issue in a land of fantasy, but addressing the problem head-on.
Assuming there aren't any hidden costs with my upcoming wisdom teeth removal, I should be able to spare $10-20 unless something even better comes up between now and Tuesday.

If donating to an anti-bullying campaign inspired by the gamergate tag, which started because of a mostly unrepentant bully, makes you feel better about supporting it then go for it.

Assuming the campaign was sincerely trying to meet its goal, why shouldn't he support it? It's not as though Gjoni is running it or something.

Edit: I also question Buzzfeed's willingness to immediately connect Sarkeesian's Utah threat to GamerGate if only because the threat never once mentioned it and Sarkeesian says she's been threatened times before (for instance a San Deigo convention well before GG had a bomb threat for giving her some award). I'm not saying they're not connected, but there is no evidence that I've seen that they are.

On the other hand, this is Buzzfeed we're talking about. We're lucky the article wasn't fifteen .gif of dancing sea turtles with the title "Man Accuses Girlfriend Of Being A Whore And What Happens Next Will Amaze You Forever..."

However you decide to honor them, just make sure that you do. It’s important to let these companies know that we support those who support us. That source is very Gamergate biased, so if you want to find another source, you can just Google it.

Wow, not bad at all given that they have no actual platform. It is mildly hilarious that it took 'hate' framing to be effective. Maybe nerds can now take the place of gays and start exto.. I mean collecting donations from companies that do not place enough nerds on their boards of directors. We have rights you know!

She didn't cancel that one because San Diego increased security in response to the threat. Utah was unwilling/unable to do so.

They were willing to prevent backpacks and increase security personnel in Utah, though. They just weren't going to bring in metal detectors and ban weapons altogether.

Edit: It's the bomb threat I don't believe. Let's get that on record before people throw a hissyfit.

Well, you'd be right because I should have been typing San Francisco. The San Diego bomb threat is a hoax!

As for San Francisco, per Newsweek:
Quote:
In a statement, the award ceremony’s organizers confirmed that 25 staffers received the following anonymous email early on March 19: “A bomb will be detonated at the Game Developers Choice award ceremony tonight unless Anita Sarkeesian’s Ambassador Award is revoked. We estimate the bomb will kill at least a dozen people and injure dozens more. It would be in your best interest to accept our simple request. This is not a joke. You have been warned.”

This goes back to my previous train of thought about the Utah event: While I wouldn't put it past anyone to intentionally overreact to a given Tweet sent to them for the publicity, I don't think any of these advocates are willing to incur the wrath of the FBI by making bomb threats to events staff just for free publicity.

WHAT SIDE!?! We're both anti-death threat, right?

Now, I'm of the opinion that gamergate started out super misogynistic & that the dude from Kotaku was joking when he said the bringing back bullying would have prevented the trolls of gamergate:

But do you REALLY believe that what Eron Gjoni did - **** shaming his ex Zoe Quinn while ranting about social justice - was somehow "better" than what the guy from Kotaku did - tweeting what most people think was a joke about bullying?

Seriously - you'd prefer an actual bully to a sarcastic one?
