My Grandmother has had kidney issues for years now. This past year they've finally given out. She's on dialysis. Not blood dialysis but some weird "fill your gut with special liquid and sit around for an hour every four hours".

They've gone through all the children and they have all been ruled out as donor because of their own health and kidney issues.

Now they are think of grandkids. I'm the oldest and healthiest of the grandkids. The others have various kidney issues or are still children. I have not been asked by any doctors or my grandmother. Just my parents brought it up. And my mom says my grandmother doesn't really want anyone to donate it now. (But, grain of salt on that cause she's that type of person)

But I'm torn. I'm afraid that being so young with a family history of blood pressure and diabetes issues is going to leave me vulnerable when I get older. I'm afraid I don't want to give up a kidney this early in my life.

Now I get to weigh my grandmother's (possibly) short term health vs the chance (how ever small) of myself having kidney issues as I grow older.

That sucks, if only because I'm sure you feel familial obligation there. As someone removed from the situation, I'd say to keep your kidneys because the benefit to your grandmother would be pretty short term (vs if it was a sibling or even a parent). But I can easily say that since I don't have a sick elderly relative who'd potentially want my organs.

So, just hypothetically how would your grandma feel about a slightly used Indian spammer kidney. I might know a guy that has a source of those.

Tell grandma that ever since you woke up in that hotel bathtub full of ice, you're not sure you have a kidney to give.

I think it's crummy your parents laid this on you.

Talk to your gramma. See what she wants. Take it from there.

I wouldn't. If your family has a history of issues, I don't think you should put yourself at more risk for someone who is on the way out the door.

Really depends on how old she is and what other health problems she has. If she's an otherwise healthy 72-year-old I'd say offer. If she's a fragile 90-year-old I'd pretend I hadn't heard the question.

Why wait and have to agonize over it, just kill the grandmother prophylactically. I'm kidding, give her the kidney, don't be a douche. Whats one of your vital organs compared to being a family hero?

I wouldn't do it. I have a transplant and the toll the drugs take is pretty high. At best you might get her a few more years with a great deal of luck but more then likely she'll get 2 or 3 years depending on how bad the immune suppressants damage her healthy organs. Then after all that there is also a increase risk of cancer from having your immune system suppressed. While i didn't see if her age was brought up but if she is past 60 then its really not worth the risk to you.

I think I'd take "2 to 3 years" over death, honestly.
