Come in Friday, office floor is wet. Call maintenance, and they send someone up. While waiting I notice lots of stuff is wet, 2 storage rooms, hallway, water dripping down the elevator shaft, etc. De-ionized water filter is ajar in one of the storage rooms, with water running out. Maintenance guy gets here, proceeds to inspect it and breaks it the rest of the way. Now water is pouring out and he's frantically turning knobs on the wall trying to guess which one might turn off the water. Finally finds the right one and things stop getting worse.

3 days later I'm still waiting to get back into the office. Holes are in the wall and they're pumping in hot air trying to dry stuff out. Rescued my computer today at least. Now I can be productive aka post on forums again. Smiley: rolleyes

Funny thing is this has happened dozens of times over the years and they've always just given me a fan and said "good luck it'll dry soon," maybe brought in a shop-vac once to get rid of some of the excess water. The difference in response this time is rather amusing.

Fun fact: The raised floor in your data center does do a great job allowing you to direct cool air around and run cables and whatnot under the floor. But it's the top of the floor that is raised, not the bottom. It does *not* do anything about flood water getting in from say, a busted water main. All those 3" diameter power cables running from the power units to the racks? Time to hit the big red button on the wall behind the clear plastic cover with a sign under it that says "don't touch". That was a good time!

Every once in awhile, when I'm working in the narrow hallway spaces behind the systems on our test floor, I'll stop and look around. Yup. There's the big honking water pipes that feeds the water chillers. And there's the bit honking liquid nitrogen pipes that provides the "chill" part of that. And there's the high power lines right there, and a big power box with more lines running 220 to each bay, plus a couple 110 plates as well. And network switches and cables running all over the place. Oh. And the chiller units themselves, which occasionally drop condensation onto the floor (there's seriously a mop and bucket in each of those rooms for that very reason). But hey. I'll just hang out here with my console cart doing some system updates for a while cause it's fun and exciting.

Actually, they do a really good job maintaining that stuff. But it's still a bit unnerving when you stop and think about all the dangerous stuff that's more or less surrounding you in that situation.

My last factory install we had 800 amp, 3 phase, 480 volt power feeds to the main panel that went under the concrete. This is in Kentucky near the Ohio River. It would pretty consistently fill the conduits with water.

But, the cables are rated for it (everything under ground has to be rated for it, regardless of how dry it may be).

Still a bit unnerving seeing big 500 mcm cables swimming water.

Yeah. That's a bit scary, but if it's just the cables, barring some kind of damage to the sheath, you should be fine. Those big three prong locking connector thingies are presumably not waterproof at all though.

Anyone try one of those Chinese smartphones hitting the market lately? Was originally going to get a OnePlus 3 this winter but then they teased the OnePlus 3T to come out next week. $439 for 5.5" screen, Snapdragon 821, 6GB RAM, 64GB storage, etc

But now I just bought a LeEco S3 for my kid a couple days ago (to be delivered tomorrow) which is usually $249 but had a $100 instant rebate. Not "flagship" quality but a steal for $149, especially since all he does is play Clash of Clans and text friends with it. They're running another $100 off sale for Black Friday and I could get a LeEco Pro3 for $279 after $100 off plus another $20 coupon. Close to the same specs at the OnePlus 3T but 4GB RAM (offset by a much larger battery). For $150 cheaper than the 3T, I can't complain. Biggest complaint from people seems to be the OS skin that tries to push you into the LeEco "ecosystem" but you toss Nova Launcher on it and you're good to go.

Yup. One of the realizations recently (I can't say by whom, of course) is that while Samsung and Apple are battling it out for who can produce a 1% better phone at the top end with premium price tags associated, there's a growing demand for more modest phones that cost 1/4 to 1/3rd as much, but have 85% of the capability (ie: a better deal over time). This is a growing market, which is expected to grow even more (especially in the US, which is just starting to figure this out).

And hey. My stock price (well, more like dividends paid out) goes up just as much from a sale of a part in a $200 phone as it does in an $800 one, so there's that. As a side note, I actually got a decent bonus this year, which hasn't been the case for awhile. So... Yay!

I have a Chinese smartphhone, a ZTE something or other. It was pretty cheap, but I bought it in China so I don't know how much you save with an export version over a Korean or American phone. Does everything I want it to do, but I'm not a huge phone user. Camera could use a higher res, other than that no complaints.

Oh, and it almost certainly has a bunch of spyware on there somewhere.

I think very few people are actually well paid enough for dropping $800 on the newest model every year not to be a questionable decision. ($100,000+) Some people really like their phones though I guess.

I couldn't help you out on this one, I picked up a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge a few months ago. It's great phone, with my only complaints being that the battery is not removable and that the glass back makes it a bit uncomfortable in the hand. A ten dollar skin fixed the second problem, not much I can do about the first.

The LeEco S3 came today and is set up. As expected, my kid was quickly receptive to the idea of installing Nova Launcher in lieu of the stock skin but aside from that it seems to be a pretty nice bit of hardware for the price.

I look at upgrading my Samsung Galaxy 3 last year and decided I can live with an old phone that doesn't like to charge unless the cord is plug in just right.

Only problem is that it can't connect to Square chip card reader, I got for selling my jewelry and Squared didn't provide information on what phones would until after I paid $50 for it. Since I sometimes use daughter's newer smart phone to accept credit cards, I didn't return it.

Now the reason I came to post on this dying site. Chinese pop song about Chickens. I'm not sure what the song is actually about, but I'm sure a English translation will be available soon.

Actually, and I'm sick of explaining this to people, the answer is no. The Galaxy S7 Note, which uses a completely different battery than the Edge, is the phone that has a slight tendency to blow up.

That's because it likely isn't an issue. Even the author of that article clearly states that none of the stories of S7s catching fire can be confirmed.
