Man tells police he killed friend for turning into a zombie wrote:
GRANTS, N.M. (AP) -- A New Mexico man who had been watching TV's "The Walking Dead" told authorities he fatally beat his friend before he could become a zombie.

Grants police spokesman Moses Marquez said Sunday that 23-year-old Christopher Paquin was beaten and that 23-year-old Damon Perry is being held on a murder charge.

Perry's attorney, Michael E. Calligan, did not immediately return a call for comment.

Officers were called Thursday afternoon to an apartment complex where Perry was allegedly wielding a knife.

They found Paquin's body inside an apartment and maintenance workers detaining Perry.

Perry told investigators they had been drinking when Paquin began "to change into a zombie" and tried to bite him.

Police say Perry beat Paquin with his hands, feet, an electric guitar and a microwave.

Authorities say Perry attributed his actions to binge-watching "The Walking Dead," which centers on a zombie apocalypse, on Netflix.
It's the microwave that makes the story.

A local radio station plays a game for prizes every once in a while called "Florida or Albuquerque". They read a weird crime/stupid criminal story and the contestant guesses which of the two is the location. It is...rarely easy.

I'm sorry, you seem to have me confused with someone who pretends democracy is working. If it were entirely up to me, the Tea Party and their ilk would be forcibly removed from both state and federal offices, and their voters corralled into involuntary reeducation camps. That's just me though. Feel free to use me as your strawman.

Not too different from him, really.

Edit: Some news for people that think throwing money in a toilet is freeing:
Lightning McQueen wrote:
DETROIT - For the third time in seven years, General Motors (GM) is recalling cars that can leak oil and catch fire, in some instances damaging garages and homes.

The recall, which covers 1.4 million vehicles dating to the 1997 model year, is needed because repairs from the first two recalls didn't work. More than 1,300 cars caught fire after they were fixed by dealers, the company said.

In the previous recalls, in 2008 and 2009, GM told owners to park the cars outside until repairs can be made since most of the fires happened shortly after drivers turned off the engines. A spokesman was checking to see if the same recommendation applies this time.

U.S. safety regulators became aware of the fires in early 2007 and GM has since reported 19 minor related injuries. In 2008, a GM spokeswoman said the cars were responsible for 267 fires, including at least 17 that burned structures.

The latest recall, mainly in North America, includes:
  • 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Regal
  • 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala
  • 1998 and 1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue
  • 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
All have 3.8-liter V6 engines.

Over time, a valve cover gasket can degrade, allowing oil to seep out. Under hard braking, oil drops can fall onto the exhaust manifold and catch fire. Flames can spread to a plastic spark plug wire channel and the rest of the engine.

The problem first surfaced in 2007, when 21 consumer complaints about engine fires in some of the cars prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate. That probe found three injuries. Most of the blazes happened five to 15 minutes after the engines were turned off, according to agency documents.

The investigation led to the recall in March 2008 of more than 200,000 U.S. cars with supercharged engines. A year later GM recalled almost 1.5 million more cars that weren't supercharged. Dealers replaced the spark plug wire channels but documents filed with the government don't mention any repair of the oil leaks.

GM hasn't come up with a final fix in the most recent recall, spokesman Alan Adler said. The company will use state registration databases in an effort to track down the owners, he said. The 1,300 fires were discovered when GM began investigating whether to recall some 2004 models, Adler said.

The recall is so large that it could have an impact on GM's fourth-quarter earnings, although Adler said that hasn't been determined.

"Since we have not decided on the remedy, we do not know whether the cost will result in a material charge to earnings," he said.

What would you reeducate them to be like? How would that be better? Heck. How do you define "better"? I point this out often, but it bears pointing out again: It's terrifically easy to oppose something or someone. It's a lot harder to support an alternative and clearly explain why it would be better than the thing you oppose. What would a perfect world be like for you, and how do you propose we go about obtaining it? I'm honestly curious.

You know what happens when you drink yourself silly over three hours, and then add like two hours on top of that? I don't either, I blacked out somewhere between the twelfth and thirteenth inning. I'm not even sure how I got home. And they still lost 5-4 in 14. Smiley: mad On side note, at least a free AM Crunch Wrap on November 5th from Taco Bell, courtesy of a stolen base early on.

I guess I could cross post my reply to the Economy thread:

Quote:
I feel like we talk about this at least once a month covering all the same things back and forth. It's like everybody forgot that we had this exact same discussion just a month or two ago. There is no topic for me that is more profoundly disgusting-- having lived the low wage American Nightmare all my life, and to this day continue to watch my friends and family and former coworkers scrape by while a bunch of sociopaths call them stupid and lazy for literally not having any other options. Yet I'm somehow expected to take those people seriously enough to find "common ground" with them.

I'll tell you what. I really don't feel strongly either way about things like abortion or *** marriage or gun control, despite my leanings-- but I will not accept it when I'm told it is fine and normal for human beings to devout their lives to a job that earns them just barely enough to get by on. There is nothing more disheartening than listening to my old friends who've had the wool pulled completely over their eyes talk about "toughing it out" and "being grateful" for the opportunity they have when said "opportunity" is tantamount to slavery.

If I could force people to open their god damned eyes on just this one thing-- that'd be more than enough. If we could only get people to come to terms with what is so painstakingly obvious and destroy this web of desperate sophistry the world's wealthiest have created for us. While we're at it, perhaps we could somehow brainwash the masses into thinking it's *not* ok to react to everything we don't like with murder and violence.

You want to fairly diametrically opposed things; fair allocation of resources and restraint of force by the masses. Unless you mean less enabling by the masses of power concentrations utilization of force? How do you do that without violence?

The second half of that sentence is at least as important as the first. As I keep saying, it's not enough to just say what you are against, but what you are for. What do you propose doing? It's easy to oppose something. It's much harder to come up with an alternative course of action.

How exactly do you get to a world without fascist, racists, selfish a-holes without becoming worse examples of those things yourself along the way?

So...? Goosestepping goons with helmets and guns arresting anyone who doesn't adopt the proper mindset? Perhaps round up and put into camps those who don't comply, or are "undesirable"? Too much? Maybe. But seriously. How do you "force" people to do this? People don't agree with you on things. That's normal and natural. The system we should have is one that doesn't require that we force everyone to agree with us.

Quote:
If we could only get people to come to terms with what is so painstakingly obvious...

What is so painstakingly obvious though? What exactly are you talking about?

Quote:
...and destroy this web of desperate sophistry the world's wealthiest have created for us.

The "wealthy" didn't create it for us. Ok. Presumably many of the folks who created the US were wealthy, but what is the alternative? A mob of people? A powerful dictator to force folks to do what he wants? They were wealthy, but they realized that the best system, while imperfect, would be the one that allowed the most freedom. And that doesn't guarantee outcomes. The thing is that they knew what systems with guarantees were like. And that usually wasn't a good thing. Or current system is the result of an attempt to create, not a perfect world, but the best one that we can given that we ourselves are imperfect beings.

I'll ask again: How would you do things differently? It's easy to just point at what isn't working, but if you can't propose a course of action and argue how it'll make things "better" then you are just complaining. That's not terrifically helpful.

Quote:
While we're at it, perhaps we could somehow brainwash the masses into thinking it's *not* ok to react to everything we don't like with murder and violence.

I'm reasonably certain that the very very large majority of the masses don't think that way. Why not start by accurately outlining the problems you want to solve, and not just engaging in hyperbole? It might be more productive.

We're too far gone. I'd like a world in which the welfare of all people are considered more important than amassing individual power and fortune, but it seems that human nature is vicious and greedy. My proposition? Eliminate the human race and let the next advanced species inherit this planet. Maybe the mess we leave can be a warning to them.
