Another company succumbs to technological advances. STORY

Skymall, as I'm sure most are aware, was an airplane catalog with really weird over-priced stuff. The pet stuff was specially excessive.

The publication provided me some distraction from uncomfortable, squishy, loud flights. The x-word puzzle in the airlines travel magazine that shared the pouch with Skymall was more often than not was already filled in.

They'll probably scale back the overly excessive items and change the publication to Skymart. Either that or set up to add popups and links to their products and webpage for people using the wifi on airlines and airports.

God that was badly written.

What shocks me is that anyone ever purchased anything through those things in the first place. Pretty crappy business model to put a catalog in a location where the customer can't actually use it to order anything (at least not while actually reading the thing). Did people actually like write down the ordering info and then order stuff later or something? I never really got how that was supposed to work. I mean, I guess you've got a captive audience, and I've certainly looked through the things on occasion when terribly bored on a flight, but it never remotely occurred to me to even bother to figure out how one might actually order anything through it. Once I'm on the ground, there's a dozen other ways to order stuff that aren't ridiculously priced and limited to garbage I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. So unless there was some kind of ordering slot on the plane that I missed (and that I'd trust to put credit card info on), I'm just not seeing how it ever worked.

The idea was that you could bring the catalog with you. People don't use catalogs now, but they certainly used to be a viable strategy. Getting eyes onto your products gives you a huge advantage over just cold mailing out to people who will likely just throw it in the bin.

I still don't know why people buy dutyfree... or the guy who waits to get on the plane and orders a beer on a 3 hour flight. Seriously?

I buy scotch at duty free because it's about 30% cheaper than buying it back home. That's generally the reason, you save money. It's not really a mystery.

the guy who ordered the beer on the plane likely didn't wait to get on the plane to drink, just continued drinking on the plane.

Maybe I just looked at the wrong things. Just about everything I ever looked for at the airport is ridiculously overpriced.

I know. A bagel w/cream cheese and cup o' joe will cost you the best part of ten bucks.

Check the magazine stores. They often have European consumable's on sale. With no duty, it can make it a pretty good deal.
