When your job is mostly public speaking, sometimes you need to know when to just shut up.
robot6 wrote:
Following days of heated exchanges regarding his brother and 9/11, Jeb Bush should’ve welcomed a softball question about his favorite Marvel superhero. However, the struggling Republican presidential contender swung, missed and then got a little weird.

Appearing Wednesday at a Libre Initiative forum in Las Vegas, the former Florida governor initially seemed prepared for the question (“Who is your favorite superhero — Marvel, they have in parenthesis — and why?”), delivering a response tailored to the conservative audience. “I like watching the movies,” Bush said, “and I wish I owned Marvel, as somebody who believes in capitalism.”

It worked, too, as The New York Times reports the answer elicited laughter from the crowd. However, he kept going, offering that, “I’m kind of old school. I kind of like the old-school guys, like Batman.” Sure, the Dark Knight isn’t a Marvel superhero, old school or otherwise, but no harm, now foul.

But then Bush continued, and this is where things got … awkward. Explaining that earlier that day he saw an ad for CBS’s new drama Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist, he finally settled on the Girl of Steel (also not a Marvel superhero).

“She looked kinda — she looked pretty hot,” he said with a chuckle. “I don’t know what channel it’s on, but I’m looking forward to that.”

Bush added with a chuckle, “that will make news.” Yes, it will.

He’s not the first Republican candidate this year to take on the superhero question: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz drew criticism in July after he named Rorschach from Watchmen as one of his favorites, while Donald Trump launched countless memes in August when he jokingly confirmed “I am Batman.”

This is a great tagline for the inevitable consolidation of Change.org and MoveOn.org.

New Hillary defense: "i dont even have a computer" ( with the exception of the one I pay someone to set up for me so that I can ensure my communications are not part of the public record ).

Gotta love her.

She said she didn't have a computer in her State Department office, not that she's never owned one or doesn't have one at home, etc.

I love articles that link to a bunch of non-name Twitter accounts as though the thoughts of @misterpunchy771 and @sparkelponygirll constitutes "news".

I tend to prefer her "I'm sorry the facts don't fit your narrative, Congressman" defense.

Well, she ran the State Department so I'd guess that it's her call. The committee wanted to see more of a paper trail of her communication with Stevens. Her point was that email wasn't her primary method of being in contact with diplomats, an assertion backed up by others who worked for her.

The hearings turned out to pretty much be a dud for Republicans. Even Gowdy said he learned nothing much new (after eleven hours) than from her previous testimony at the many committees before. That the biggest news is whether or not Clinton's office had a desktop pretty much backs this up.

I would imagine most of the time at that level it's easier and more efficient to have a lackey send out emails on your behalf.

Apparently one of Paul Ryan's conditions to take the Speaker job is he should be allowed to have family time that he voted against people having.

Not too surprising, Lindsay Graham demanded flood relief that he voted against in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. It's not a problem until it affects ME.

I swear Lindsay Graham isn't a real person but a guy just auditioning to be cast in the eventual Gone With The Wind reboot. As Scarlett.

Oh, and Chafee is out, to no one's real surprise.

And who wasn't a Democrat during the election that actually mattered since it plainly showed where the interests of the voters lay.

He wasn't ever a republican though. He ran on a Segregation ticket, then went immediately back to the Democratic party (and won re-election as Governor of Alabama as a Democrat). So to whatever degree you think racists were voting for the more racist party, it's pretty clear that was the Democrats prior to passage of the CRA, and at least in the Deep South, continued to be the democrats for some time after.

And again, you are arguing the exception and not the rule.

Every election after the signing of the CRA is the "Exception"? Well... ummm... whatever you need to tell yourself?

Are you saying that southern votes in every presidential election after the CRA was primarily determined by racist voters? That seems unlikely. It seems far more likely that once the CRA was passed, most voters adopted the principles of equality and abandoned ideas of re-implementing segregation and Jim Crow. And as they did that, they switched to voting for the party that had held these positions all along: The GOP.

Only if the last time you worked in a real job, you still sent people memos or something. I'm going to second Ugly's point about this. It's monumentally unlikely she simply didn't have a computer at all, unless she specifically asked to not have one. Which, I suppose, for one who didn't want to leave an electronic trail of her activities, might make a lot of sense.

Quote:
The committee wanted to see more of a paper trail of her communication with Stevens. Her point was that email wasn't her primary method of being in contact with diplomats, an assertion backed up by others who worked for her.

That was really a minor part of the whole thing though. It's not about volume. It's about establishing that she personally knew that requests for additional security had been made. Something she denied before, but now turns out to be true. Whether she used other means for the bulk of her communications is kinda irrelevant when just the small percentage we do have clearly shows that several of the things she claimed in the aftermath of the attack were not true.

IMO, the real bombshell wasn't necessarily in her testimony, but in the information revealed from her email server about what she told people about the attack on day one. It's clear now that she knew the attack had nothing to do with a protest over a video, and stated this to several people. Which just leads to more questions about how on earth her subordinate was sent on TV 5 days later to tell everyone in the US a lie.

If you thought that was the biggest news, then I'm curious what sources you're using. Everything I've read and listened to has been about the whole "she knew the protest thing was false from day one", bit.

Actually my sources were mainly like "Wow, that was a waste of time unless the GOP just wanted to make Clinton look presidential."

Confirmation Bias: Just as good as reality.

Looks like the Trump Train is losing momentum, as Carson now seems to lead him in Iowa by double digits. Neither are particularly appealing.

Darn straight! ;)

Was kinda busy last week, so I didn't get time to do much posting online. I've now officially delved into the giant cluster-F that is grub2. Arguably the worst documented software product I've encountered. I particularly loved one comment on a dev site where someone simply asked for a list of modules in the code and maybe some documentation about what they each do. The response was something like "well, we're really busy writing this stuff, but if you want to volunteer to document our work, that would be great!". Sigh...

Oh. And I also managed to track down and document a minor bug (that's sarcasm, it's a ridiculously major bug) in a major test yield vendors code that essentially caused one out of every ten test runs to fail to produce any data. Everywhere in the world. So I'm sorry if I didn't have time to respond to your posts while I was singlehandedly reducing the cost of every chip (ok, nearly every chip) manufactured in the world for you all. You can thank me later. I'll take quarter pennies. Lots and lots of them.

Uh huh. Confirmation bias. She could have babbled incoherently and drooled over herself for 11 hours, and your sources would have said she nailed it and was presidential, and whatever other superlatives they need to say to keep the lie going.
