Tacos are great. After conferring with the judges, we'd have also accepted "civilization." Things that "subgroups" have done that rival White Christian civilization, religion and civilization.

... think I'll have tacos for lunch, though.

"Fair and balanced," probably requires a token person that appears to be anti-Trump in order to make the illusion effective.

Also, tacos for lunch sounds like an excellent idea.

Speaking of tacos, there's a norovirus outbreak at the RNC. GOP staffers being quarantined.

Not sure if that one is Trump's fault or not. Might be divine wrath or something.

Undercover Democratic staff members only acting on behalf of a super-PAC and not part of Hillary's actual campaign.

Well, I'll be keeping an eye out for the Cuyahoga River to catch on fire again. Might need to start going to church.

What is "tacos", Pat?
No, sorry, we were looking for "What is religion." Pick another category.

Also, my name is Alex, Pat is on the show with the Wheel.

/shrug I'm assuming since English isn't her native tongue, that she had speech writers polish the language for her, and probably helped structure the sections so that they flowed well (which is pretty normal for speech writing). As to the fact that two sentences in the speech happened to be virtually identical to a speech someone else gave 8 years ago? Blame the guy who polished the language. If Trump is smart, he'll make a big show of saying "You're fired" to the guy and move on.

I do find it funny how terrified liberals are of conservative women though. Let's be honest, if it hadn't been a couple lines in her speech, it would have been something else that would have been zeroed in on and made the source of ridicule.

Actually, everyone was saying how well she did prior to someone making the comparison. But I know it's a cuddly strawman that keeps you warm at night to say "They're all scared of us, oh yes, that's why they laugh..."

The problem with this* vis-a-vis expanding his base is that he comes out of it getting laughed at. This has been the only story all morning and most of it is mockery towards the speech and the Trump campaign response. When you're trying to maintain a "razor thin veneer of gravitas", having your convention news be all about laughing at you is pretty bad stuff.

*Which isn't to over-exaggerate; no one will be looking back at this as the moment Trump lost of course. But it blew his opening convention momentum

Exactly, it's not going to change anyone's vote, but it's pretty good Dem candy corn.

Additional jokes include: Trump supporters won't care anyway, because most of them plagiarized their way through high school.

What Jophiel said. She was the only speech I could stomach watching. Everyone else was "Hillary killed people!" "Black people are lying!" Although the net has taken this to another level, the initial response is how poorly the CAMPAIGN is, not her. Everyone knows that she knew not.

I slept through all of last night but reviewing Twitter at the time and reading a little, the consensus seemed to be that the Trump kids did a good job*, Ryan & McConnell maybe made establishments feel a little better but didn't really inspire and Christie was the loud, yelling man for the night. Also, the theme of the "Making America Work" was completely lost and the main theme seems to be "vote for Trump because he's not Clinton". I pretty much missed anyone talking about the soap star/avocado lady so I assume she didn't bring much to the evening.

*Margaret Hoover (gasp! a Republican!) made the point though that your primary character witnesses really shouldn't have to be your children.

538 has him at 38.2% chance to win EC, but I'd hold the suicide hotline until a few weeks post DNC convention.

Putting a lot of stock into polls between conventions seems a bit foolish.

Sounds as though no one will get canned over the Melania speech thing because those parts were added either by Melania or her friend. I guess Trump could always fire Melania and get a new wife.

Do polls take in the electoral college in consideration? What's the point of asking 1000 people if they don't represent the electoral college? A conservative vote in California does not hold the same weight as a conservative vote in Texas.

National polls are still predictive enough to be useful. But all the major polling aggregate sites also show state-by-state polling to predict EC results. You tend not to see as much heavy state polling until after the conventions though.

It's pretty rare that someone loses the national vote yet wins the EC though so there's still value in national polling. And no one is going to win the national vote by 4% and lose the EC vote; the distribution just doesn't work out that way.

Technically, a single conservative vote in CA probably does hold the same weight as one in Texas -- both can be safely ignored since we already know how CA and TX are going to go Smiley: grin

Yep, the part of the election where the votes of anyone not from a swing state matters is over.

Well, on the presidential side. There's enough splits when it comes to other offices (Congressional, gubernatorial, state legislative, etc) that voting still matters.

I understand. My point being that a state poll is probably more telling than a national poll since we don't know where the votes are coming from.
