Guess Bannon taking control was the first part of a two part act: Manafort is booted (sorry, "resigns") from the Trump campaign.

Regarding the "Trump is a liberal plant!" conspiracy theory: Does this mean that figures like Christie, Giuliani, Gingrich, Manafort, Hannity, Bannon, Coulter, etc are all in on this or are they all just morons being played for saps by the Liberal Conspiracy Machine?

I think that most of them are so heavily entrenched in their anti-Democrat/Obama rhetoric they've been forced into backing Trump; the rest are either blinded by their own political ambitions our just outright insane.

Well, we now have good evidence that Manafort was played for a sap. The conspiracy lives!

Pretty sure we've got plenty of good evidence we're all being played for saps.

Saw this today, about how, while trying to show Trump as contradictory, CNN Politics equated blacks to felons.

Quote:
...in attempting to slam Trump for being racist and/or hypocritical for having the audacity of taking a position on ex-felons not being allowed to vote, after openly courting the black vote, the authors — Ashley Killough and Karl de Vries — inadvertently make themselves look that way instead. Because almost any lucid person seeing such a headline would come to the same conclusion:

That "blacks" are somehow synonymous with "felons."

Blacks make up a plurality (36%) of the US prison population while making up only 12% of the US general population. I don't think it's necessarily "equating blacks to felons" to suggest that felon disenfranchisement laws disproportionately affect African Americans or that AAs would have a vested interested in the subject.

Put another way, if the headline was to read "Trump wants GOP to court Hispanics -- then slams social services for immigrants" I doubt anyone would have blinked since it's obvious that Hispanics are most likely to be affected by cutting services for immigrants despite the fact that not all Hispanics are immigrants and not all immigrants are Hispanic.

Well, they shouldn't blink. They would have, though.

And 1 million of the 2.3 million inmates are African Americans link out of 38.9 million people who identified as AA. link

So that looks like 37 million non-felon African Americans.

No one said otherwise. But the disenfranchisement for conviction rate is 1-in-13 for African Americans and 1-in-56 for non-blacks (disenfranchisement, of course, often continues after release so the rate is higher than just that of current prisoners which includes minor non-felony incarceration). You don't need every African American to be a felon for this to be an important point of advocacy among black populations or for a rejection of voting rights to sound tone-deaf when courting black voters. Which is what CNN was saying regardless of how other people took it.

I'll say, sure, CNN maybe should have picked different phrasing based on how some people are responding to it but that's more of a "CYA against knee-jerk reactions" than "You've let on your secret bias!"

In CNN's case I'd put it down to their continued degeneration from a quality news source to something significantly less so. Drumming up extra attention with a Trumpesque statement is rather par for them these days.

Could be. I haven't been reading much CNN or paying attention to their headlines. Maybe my initial reaction to the headline ("Sure, makes sense") wasn't typical.

Don't think it was anything particularly sinister. in the 1990s they were basically the only American full-time news network. You had political and news junkies tuning in, and they tended to give more in-depth pieces and appeal to a broader range of people because their audience came from all across the political spectrum. Being the quality news program was where the market was in those days. More recently it seems they've got caught up in the transition to the modern 24-hour news programming. Competition from rivals with partisan sources that were more appealing to certain demographics stole viewers, and the increased competition led to a more "STAY TUNED TO US SO YOU DON'T MISS SOMETHING IMPORTANT AND DIE!" kind of rhetoric that's so wonderfully common. So nowadays they're more of an MSNBC-lite with a bit more international viewership.

I have nothing really against CNN. If I clicked a link that brought me there, I wouldn't be all "ew, CNN!". But they seem to have fallen into the "Let's have lots of auto-play video in lieu of text" news pit so they're largely off my rotation since I'd rather read a story than watch someone give me a two minute blurb about it.

That's just the internet site. I watch almost no television aside from stuff like the debates and conventions.

This also.

Anything with audio is no-go at work. People who don't care if you spend a portion of the day surfing the internet start to care pretty quickly if you're interrupting their quiet office/lab place thing.

I dunno, being discrete is part of it for better or for worse. Given there's nothing work-related I need headphones for that probably wouldn't fly.

So Hillary is giving a speech on Thursday that has a non-zero percent chance of mentioning "The Online Scourge known as #GAMERGATE". If it happens and I die from laughing, give half my postcount to lolgaxe and the other half to the starving pygmies in New Guinea.
