Yea, I wouldn't say cute. I really enjoyed it but it would've been better with a little less fan-service.

The duality of Elfen Lied might be best explained by the nature of its OP and ED. On one side there is a very serious, deep, and artsy element, and the the other you have J-pop. Half the time Elfen Lied is an exploration of childish impulses (i.e. what if a 6 year old could effectively act out their temper tantrum) and the other half it is a bland comedy ecchi about a magical girl forced to live with a guy chobits/ah! my goddess/midori no hibi/etc. style.

Aren't those mostly the same half? And the other one would be the boobs dipped in blood thing.

Elfen Lied was one of the first series I watched, and it's still one of my favorites :D
