Manga I have read recently (updated)Follow

#52 Feb 11 2013 at 10:06 AM Rating: Good
I caught up on the latest chapters of Skip Beat!, which is one of those shoujo romances that suffers from monthly releases so it's better to just read it every few months and catch up all in one go.

Stuff actually happened! Kyoko, in her role as Setsu, tried to halfway seduce Ren, in his role as Cain Heel, causing them both great distress/consternation as they're both damn good actors and the entire situation didn't even have a damn audience. Ren was jealous because Sho Fuwa called Kyoko and he had thrown her phone against the wall, breaking it. She was "punishing" him and at the same time reassuring him that he was still her number one. She ended up leaving a hickey on his neck.

I recently read Kimi wa Midara na Boku no Jouou. It's a short five chapter story about two people who love each other but both are stereotypically awkward admitting it and moving along with it. There's also a pillow that steal's the girl's self control for an hour a day, which leads to some amusing shenanigans.

Not particularly safe for work reading, and it isn't mind blowing amazing in any way really. Just a decent and short read.

I read that recently. I was kinda shocked when it ended so abruptly at the fifth chapter. Almost felt like the series was cut or something.

Edit: That one is really a MATURE manga, far beyond simple fan service. If we're gonna start including those kinds of manga, I have about a half-dozen I can add to the mix Smiley: sly Of course, then I'll totally seem like a pervert. Y'know, more of one. Smiley: tongue

I just read up to the current chapter in Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha. For a shoujo manga, I actually really enjoyed it. It's about a girl who gets the power of transformation from a nearby shrine goddess, and focuses on several couples' awkward attempts at love (including the shrine goddess and the protagonist's older brother). A lot of the expressions in the manga were hilarious, and unlike a lot of supernatural manga, the transformation power tends to make a mess of things instead of helping, thus making the moral of the story "solve your own problems honestly." It's a pretty good read.

I'm trying to get back into Rosario + Vampire, Season II, but it's a bit slow. I like how it's darker and more mature than the original, but I've already read part of it before so a lot of this rereading is familiar.

Finally, can't remember if I talked about it before, but Denpa Kyoushi is a pretty good harem comedy. It kinda reminds me of TWGOK, in that the main character is hopelessly obsessed with his otakudom, to the point that he's kind of an idiot savant (he apparently created a valid theory for a transporter while trying to make a magical door from an anime he liked). The story basically combines GTO and TWGOK for a lot of hilarity, some PG-13 fan service, and nerdiness galore.

I've read 6 of the 18 volumes of Eden: It's an Endless World!, and man... what a rush. This is an awesome seinen manga so far; it reads like an action novel. Unlike other long series such as Lone Wolf and Cub, I don't actually "feel" the hundreds of chapters as I read it. The only thing I don't have a firm grasp on is where the story is going; it seems like there are several overarching story lines that are all related... but I can't find out what the main one is, or how it'll all end up. The synopsis from myanimelist is pretty accurate so far:

Quote:
In the panic surrounding a worldwide pandemic which kills 15 percent of the population and cripples many more, a secret organization, the Propater, topples the UN and seizes control of much of the world. A boy and a girl, raised in an abandoned virology research center, immune to the virus, are attacked by the Propater and escape. 20 years later the boy is the most powerful drug lord in South America. He aids his son from behind the scenes as he evades and eventually with the help of mercenaries from Nomad (some of them former Propater operatives) fights the Propater. As the plot develops focus shifts away from the main character and develops many sub-plots dedicated to terrorism, Human-improvement, the struggle of the developing countries and the power battles between the drug cartels and Propater.

Based strongly on Gnostic mythology, all major characters are named after gnostic deities, and have analogous roles.

The manga is pretty mature, however; lots of violence, bad language, and some sex. I still highly recommend it.

I'm going back to rereading Hajime no Ippo, because apparently I hate myself. Not that it's a bad manga (Actually amongst my favorites), but that it's passed the 1,000 chapters mark.

Finished Eden. Great, great series. I feel like I missed some explanations, and the ending felt like it didn't wrap much up, but it's probably still one of the top 10 manga I've read. One thing that I really enjoyed is that most of the characters don't retain their plot armor; a lot of "main" characters die off.

So, some thoughts on it.

-Who actually controlled the colloids and the disclosure virus? It seems to be hinted that "God" was the one in charge. Also, I'm really not sure what Maya/Lethia do, besides give a voice to the colloid. Lethia is supposedly the one who would be left after the colloid serves its purpose, but Maya is shown in the final chapter/

-Meigas just kinda shows up out of nowhere in the last volume or two, right? He was never mentioned before?

-I feel like Elijah kinda gets shunted off to the side for the end of the story; Enoa becomes the main character again by the end. I didn't care for that so much; I understand Elijah had his own issues (addiction) to deal with, but he's the main character for like 10+ volumes and pretty much disappears for the last few volumes.

-Was it ever explained who the Automator was? It seemed implied that she was Enoa's lover at some point, but I couldn't quite figure out why she was so loyal to him and Elijah.

-Is it ever explained what was directing the bubble at the end? The characters say that it's acting like how humanity would act in regard to its trajectory, but unlike the colloid, there didn't seem to be any active intelligence behind it (it's just a mass of dark energy and gravities, after all). Is this another case of "God" affecting things?

I loved Eden. It was crazy and some of the stuff near the end made no sense, but damn was it a fun ride.

Agreed. This somewhat applies to another Eden... Cage of Eden, aka Eden no Ori, finally ended in January. And the ending was TERRIBLE. The manga itself was good, though it was stalling for the last few chapters before the end. It's a survival/horror/drama/harem manga, a mixture of Battle Royale and Lost; a plane experiences a power outage and crashes on an island in the Pacific that's populated with dinosaurs. The students on the plane need to survive and find out the secrets of the island.

Well... spoiler/ranting time:

So the last three chapters sum up the end of the story, and it roughly goes:
- The plane crashes, and no survivors are found
- Akira's mom is recruited by Miina's grandfather to help him on the Eden project. It's never said exactly what the plan is, or why so many countries invest in it.
- Some 40+ years later, Raika Island is created and Akira's mom dies. Apparently she also adopted a daughter at some point.
- Back on the island, three years have passed, and Akira and Co. have built a ship to escape at last. They wonder what the world is like, but decide they can't just spend the rest of their lives on Raika.

The end.

WHAT THE HELL!?

So many plot points are unresolved; the most glaring being:
How in the world did they end up on the island to begin with? It's never stated, but the only thing that makes sense is some Donnie Darko time-warp situation. That's why the plane is never found, and how they're 50-100 years in the future. For a while I thought it would turn out that they were all clones, but that's obviously not true.

And what's the point of the island itself? There seemed to be no rhyme or reason behind its creation, besides to create dinosaurs for kicks.

What happened to all the scientists? It's posited in the last chapter that they died from a biological attack, but it's never explained.

Rion and that other girl get attacked by the flesh-eating bacteria right before the flash-back chapters, but by the end it's 3 years in the future and they're fine. So much for a biological attack?

Hades? What happened to Hades? And Akira's friend?

TL;DR The series starts off with a lot of promise, and then hits a very abrupt and unsatisfying ending. It pretty much makes the manga not worth the effort of reading.

Edit: Speaking of series that do the same, I'm hoping Gantz and Berserk don't go the same way. I started rereading Berserk... halfway through the chapters currently out (IIRC, 340 or so), and MAN, I forgot how good the beginning of this series was! Good in an incredibly violent way, mind you.

All caught up on Berserk... dammit. Now I need to wait for new releases again!

Now I've been trying to find some good horror manga to read. Happened to find a very short webtoon manhwa called Bongcheon-Dong Ghost. Like most manhwa you need to scroll down...

Heh, have fun with this one.
http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=350217&no=31&weekday=tue

I also started to read Dark Edge, but it's not really all that scary (makes sense, as it's shounen). Also, only a few chapters are up on my normal manga site, so... meh. I also heard about Portus, which seems like a nifty creepypasta manga about a cursed videogame that kills people. I think I'll check that out next!

Edit: Finished Portus... not great, not terrible. The Majora's Mask creepypasta was scarier Smiley: tongue

I caught up with Ippo today, and feel the same way. Might continue with Koisuru Edison if only for this face.
Screenshot

Only read the one chapter that was released today, seems like it'll be along the lines of To Love Ru's inventing shtick, but who the hell knows at this point. Anyway, for some weird unexplained at the time reason, girl has a ***** in her brain that has Thomas Edison's brainwaves or something attached to it, and when she thinks really hard she becomes a genius inventor. And gets Edison Face. She also seems to have a thing for asses. Probably going to be dropped really, really quickly. Or not, if only for more images like the previous one.

I'll look that up next. Thanks for the recommendation!

Edit: HA! This series is ridiccccccculous so far. In a good way. It's like a shounen version of Addicted to Curry, or a more ecchi version of Yakitate Japan!. Makes me hungry Smiley: drool
Edit2: Yeah, I really can't tell if they're parodying Yakitate, or it's just so similar. This image:
Souma

Is basically identical to Yakitate, if you said "Japan #8" Smiley: tongue

Anyway, two more to talk about...

Tanabata no Kun is a somewhat dark sci-fi story. Basically, certain people who live in a remote village develop ESP, but the more they use their ESP, the less human they become. The story reminded me a lot of Parasyte. I thought it was pretty good, and it brought together a whole lot of interesting themes, but left a lot of questions unanswered (like, what is "outside the window?"). It was pretty enjoyable, but while the ending was pretty conclusive and didn't feel abrupt, I kinda wish it had answered more. The manga's a bit gory, but not really scary.

Continuing with the "weird things happen in remote Japanese villages" theme, I really enjoyed Tajikarao. Basically about a remote village in the mountains populated mostly by the elderly that worship a local god named Tajikarao. When the yakuza start working with some people to force the old folks off their ancestral lands, some young outsiders show up and decide to help them fight against the mobsters. One ends up inheriting the power of the god... or so I'd assume. Unfortunately the series is complete with 43 chapters, but I could only find 31 Smiley: mad The series is a little mature, as there's occasional nudity and some violence, and it focuses a lot of folk lore gods. It's slightly supernatural, but so far there's only been one or two truly supernatural events. I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends... if I can ever find a translation of the rest!

I started reading "Denpa Kyoushi" last night. It's a lot like Great Teacher Onizuka, but the main character is ... it's hard to describe. He's like the exact opposite of Onizuka, but at the same time the exact same. He's a NEET (or a shut-in, kind of sort of) slash otaku with ADW ((A) Able to (D) Do only what he (W) Wants to do), who is black mailed into being a teacher.

Anyway, GTO is probably in my top 5 mangas / animes, so I'm enjoying reading this little gem. Wouldn't surprise me if it were animated in the near future.

Man, Shokugeki no Soma really IS Yakitate Japan. Well, except about all kinds of food, not just bread. That's not a bad thing; it's still hilarious, and unlike YJ!, SnS has enough fan service to turn the reactions quite sexual. Than again, a big appeal to FJ! (and Addicted to Curry) was that most chapters taught a recipe too. I still remember making a loaf of bread from a rice cooker Smiley: grin So all three are great, but for slightly different reasons.

I'm almost caught up, but a little tag at the start of chapter 46 caught my eye, and it turns out I called it. Smiley: laugh Apparently Rumor has it that it is going to be an anime, and that's got me pretty psyched.

32/3 between this, It's Not My Fault I'm Not Popular, and Binbougami Ga. Smiley: thumbsup

Edit
: I'm finding less and less anime info and that they're just commercials for the manga. While it kind of gets me down, I'm still holding out for the possibility. Really, it's been a while since I've thoroughly enjoyed a manga like this.

So, JoJo's bizarre adventure... I'm on volume 3 (out of what, like 105 volumes?). I'm trying to keep in mind that this series gets better as it goes on, because so far it REALLY shows its age. It's pretty ridiculous, but the ridiculousness is "ridiculously bad." It reminds me of watching dubbed Dragon Ball Z as a kid - at the time I thought it was great, but now that I've watched a ton more anime I realize that, while it has historical importance, it's terrrrrrrrible.

Is it really worth it to keep reading?

I found it to be, but it's a tough pitch to make because I feel the payoff is fairly delayed. It also doesn't help that the only translation for some of part 4 is terrible.

I don't believe you'll end up looking back on Jojo like DBZ, but it's hard to say what you'll get out of it. At the very least, I don't know anyone who has bothered to read all of Jojo and thought of it as regrettable.

So, I'm not sure if this is to your tastes, but have you gone looking for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei? (The Irregular at Magic High School is the translated name I think.)

There's only 15 chapters of the manga out at the moment...

But there's 8 volumes of light novel that's almost completely translated on B-T now.

Personally, I find it really takes off at Generation 3. That's about when it really gets into the "ridiculous to be ridiculous" state. That's not to say there isn't entertaining ridiculousness before then, just that it feels like it's still trying to be vaguely serious up to that point. Either way, most everyone will say that you have to really sit through it to get the payoff and whether you can do so is up to you. I doubt anyone would blame you if you can't, I was bored with it for a while too.

That being said, after reading the Big Three, I saw a link to another First Chapter manga and gave it a shot. "I, Who Didn't Become a Hero, Reluctantly Decided to Find a Job / Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku o Ketsuishimashita" which I can't link to because of lolfilters, follows the story of a Hero-in-Training as he finds work after an actual hero has saved the world, and the Big Badâ„¢'s child who also needs work due to losing their inheritance sort of speak. Can't be the next Big Bad if the previous one is defeated, you know? It's the first chapter, but it was amusing enough to warrant future chapter reads. It's essentially a "What would happen to future heroes and villains if there is no need for them anymore" kind of story. A bit NSFW but not really excessively so.
