It's hard to top a "Try to touch me and you will be assimilated" situation. But nice to see he's still good at kicking *** and taking names. And he's clearly more powerful than Malack now, considering he's got more cleric levels under his belt. Edit: Oops, maybe not. Someone pointed out Malack had to be at least 15th to make mummies.

Malack used his staff for that. We don't know the origins of that item; even if he stored charges of his own Protection from Daylight spell in there the staff itself could have come from elsewhere.

I've seen it suggested that Malack was around 12th level and Durkon (level 15-16ish?) makes a crack about Malack needing to adventure more to level up so, from that alone, we can guess that Durkon is a higher level cleric.

That level is probably from the Geekery thread there. He can't be lower than 12 because he made that staff -- it's full of his own custom spells. And the staff is made to have that Daylight protection spell for emergencies actually (as that's why Durkon had to go fetch it). Although with more digging, he probably is a lower level caster with feats/items that boost his caster level. So the original crossed out statement was right after all. ^_^

Technically, we're not even sure that they are Mummies aside from them being naturally mummified corpses from the desert air. They don't inflict anyone with mummy rot or evoke a magical fear effect. Roy cleaves five of them in half with a single hit. I know people call them that but they could have just been mummified zombies.

Nothing I'd stake money on but just a thought.

Edit: Apropos of nothing, when I was looking at the mummies, I noticed Haley must still have had her Icy Blast bow in the temple. Haven't seen her freeze anyone with it lately but the arrows are trailing the icy coldness.

Are you sure about that? Belkar's daggers seem to have the same effect and they aren't ice enchanted.

I'm a little surprised since I thought Z's teeth getting knocked out last strip was setting up Z for some failed spellcasting... not that.

I don't know the 3.5 or 4th ed rules well enough to really get my mind around it but I guess Durkon used to be able to cast a certain amount of heals just as a "good cleric" without specifically memorizing Cure X Wounds? And now as a vampire cleric powered with negative energy those spells are Inflict X Wounds instead. So supposedly he could still use his other slots to specifically memorize healing spells though at the expense of other spells he could have memorized.

Malack heals V in this strip although it's uncertain if that was through his staff (which Durkon has anyway) or a specifically memorized healing spell.

Nice of Durkon and Roy to have a chat while Belkar and Hayley are being asphyxiated Smiley: grin

Although everyone was "Oh, Nale was so underestimated!" when he killed Malack, the end result seems to be that he was the same old putz in the end. He failed to secure the Gate, lost/killed the group's cleric, got the wizard killed, gave the OotS a vampire cleric who is likely more powerful than Malack was (if less versed in being a vampire), failed to kill the OotS and... well, aside from his own personal gain in killing Malack he basically screwed the whole thing up about as badly as anyone could imagine.

Yep, that's pretty much it. Evil Clerics have to prepare their cures instead of converting them, and turning into a vampire pretty much forces Durkon to do that unless he's healing himself.

Edit: Oops, looks like I forgot about Vampires energy draining on touch too. Or not. He has to actually attack to drain his energy, so was most likely not realizing he can't spontaneously cure living things anymore.

Pretty sure it's through the staff; cause if I remember correctly vampires are evil aligned no matter who they used to be, and all their healing spells turn from "Cure" to "Inflict". Only if Durkon finds a way to be classed neutral will he be able to convert one of the inflict spells back into a cure spell. So he's the potion boy for now.

Durkon can use healing magic, he just has to prepare it now.

Good clerics in this version of D&D don't have to prepare their cure spells because they can change almost any level spell into a cure spell. Evil ones can't and Neutral ones have to make a choice when their character is created. So going Neutral isn't good enough because Neutral can do either or and it is ALSO dependent on their god -- he'd have to somehow be good again under a good/neutral god in order to force it to flip to Cures again. A Neutral cleric under an Evil god is still forced to only choose inflict. Durkon didn't realize this until he tried to "cure" Roy with Inflict Moderate Wounds because he has poor knowledge about how his class abilities work outside of what he's already used.

Edit: He would have had to prepare Heal anyway since the word "Cure" isn't in that spell name.

I guess the question is whether undead (vampires specifically) play by different cleric rules than rank-and-file evil clerics. Don't ask me, I stopped playing with 1st edition.
