Finally got around to seeing this at the last chance discount theater. It was fun. Felt different from the other Marvel films from the past decade or so in that I never felt like it was going all "Rah-Rah Yay America/Earth" or moralistic & preachy. I don't think the other films so much suffered for having those either, mind you, just that GotG felt like straight fun without trying to get much deeper. I don't read comics and knew nothing of GotG prior to tonight.

I had no idea who Batista was and spent the entire movie feeling like I should recognize him. The last time I spent a second thinking about wrestling, they were making Saturday morning cartoons with Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and Junkyard Dog so that's not it. I even looked him up on IMDB and the only thing I would have seen him in was The Scorpion King but that was forever ago and I barely remember it. So I have no clue why Batista looked so familiar.

Rocket didn't annoy me which went against my expectations of seeing a bipedal raccoon in the promotional material. Groot was cool and between this and The Iron Giant, Vin Diesel really has the "act mildly retarded" school of acting down Smiley: grin

I thought the movie worked as a fun ride but the amount of settings and characters kept me from getting too invested in any of them. I wasn't lost, I just never spent enough time in one place or with one person to feel and particular attachment. Just as a random gripe, I find it hard to believe that anyone from a space-faring culture would be unfamiliar with the concept of headphones.

All in all, good times. I enjoyed the stinger, Flea was confused since she wasn't around to witness the nadir of Lea Thompson's acting career.

There are way more mild words than that that are censored, so it really shouldn't be surprising.

Am I right in that Nova supposedly evacuated a city in about 20 minutes?

It takes longer than that to get some old woman to leave her house in the path of a hurricane.

Also, when they're kamikazing the city, one guy crashes into the fountain that the Guardians fight in/near early in the film. I like the idea that someone was sacrificially crashing his ship into a fiery death in the city and then said "I'm going to aim for that fountain and reflecting pool! Eff YOU, fountain!" Smiley: laugh

I thought the evacuation was still in progress. If Rocket and the space pirates wouldn't have shot the wannabe-kamikazes there would have been pretty heavy casualties among the fleeing population.

At one point, one of the Nova officials says something like "The city is evacuated". Or I was just wrong and am misremembering. I'm not pretending that it ruined the movie or anything, more something I thought about a day later like "Heeeyyyyy...."

Edit: It would have been between Rocket & Co shooting the kamikazes and when the big ole main ship crashes. I think the idea for the audience was to say "Oh, just so you feel better, a million people weren't killed when this giant ship plowed into the city and tore through the buildings. 'Cause that'd be kind of a downer to think about during Starlord's dance-off".

Could be that you are right I just missed that line. The version I was watching had really bad sound quality (don't judge me, theatres in my vicinity showed only the dubbed german version and I hate what the synchronization usually does to movies).

Been a while, but the only thing I can imagine is they were talking about evacuating the part of the city most likely to be ground zero of where the giant warship was going to land maybe? Or it could have been a script flub. Either or.

The Edgar suit? That is a strange choice.

First of all, I was four or five when that movie came out. Second of all, I did watch it when I was fifteen or so, but all I remember of that movie is that speech the sergeant gives. And truth be told, I only really remember that because of FUMOFFU.

There is a "Skip" option in the bottom left corner of that window you can use to bypass it.
