Anyone seen this yet? I went this afternoon to see it. Enjoyed it.

Know nothing about the characters the show is based on. But that never stops me from enjoying movies like this. In some cases makes me enjoy it more.

Not exactly mind blowing or complicated at all in the plot, but it's fun. The identity of the main bad guy is obvious from the beginning, but that's OK. Though I did think his motivation should have been trying to get his daughter back (stealing and powering up the device with hopes to recover her), not pure revenge against the rich-evil dude.

I'm planning on seeing it eventually, though for a matinee or maybe a rental or something. It looks to be a teen movie, so too old for my kid to really be interested in, and too young for me to get excited for.

For anyone interested: Big Hero Six was a three part mini in the late 90s (and a five part around '08) featuring Sunfire of X-Men fame and Silver Samurai. Baymax was in it, but he was decidedly less white, baloony, and cuddly. Anyway, they were what you'd expect from what little description I gave. A superhero team based out of Japan. Shame, really. All things considered they could have easily transitioned them into the MCU. "Other nations making super teams" isn't exactly a difficult plot to build a story around. So, you know, if you thought Guardians of the Galaxy was an obscure choice to make a movie out of ...

If it's any help, there was a small crowd there when I went, and none of them were mid-teens. There were probably a dozen or so different groups, half of them with kids ranging from 4-7 years old. The little kids appeared to really enjoy Baymax's silliness. And there is a lot of it. Seemed to be a big draw for the little kids.

Oh, and there is a post-credit scene. Nothing super important, so if you have a kid or someone very impatient with you, you shouldn't feel bad about leaving before seeing it. My brother and I were the only ones in the theater that stayed to watch it. Everyone else left.

So about 40% of the crowd was under 8, another 40% were their parents and grand parents. And my brother and I, and then one group of three adults, 30-40 years old, were the only ones there that didn't have kids with us.

Saw it with some friends (all of us in our late 20s) on Saturday. We all really enjoyed it. It was no Avengers or GotG but it was well done. None of us knew the history of it either, though one person in the group said he had heard the original comics were very racist. I thought the San Fransokyo concept was the most interesting and that the city was really well designed and a brilliant mashup of Japanese cities and SF landscapes. The extra scene was funny, as it finally answered the question what will happen when Stan Lee dies and they keep making movies based on his characters?

The short film before it ("Feast") was cute as well. Most uncomfortable feeling was the preview for a Christian rock concert series when people all around us started singing. Oh man, living in the South is freaking weird sometimes.

Edit: I also found it funny that only the Valley Girl, Honey Lemon, pronounced Hiro's name properly. I know SO many white people who do the same thing, and it sounds just as odd when they do it.

I don't know about racist so much as unintentional stereotype-y. It's one of those things you'd have to force yourself to be offended by to find it offensive in any way.

Honey Lemon's enunciation of "Hiro" was odd to me as well. I was going to mention it in my first post but figured I'd leave it be.

My kids (8 and 11) are twitching to see this. And out of curiosity, how is Hiro supposed to be pronnounced? Phonetically, on a forum, should be interesting....

Like Gyro? Because that never gets mixed up...

"h IH r oh"

Hat, It, Rat, sO

I just go with "hero."

My curiosity is piqued enough to ask how does Honey Lemon pronounce it?

Heavy on the whole "R-L" thing. In English you'd pronounce it basically "Hero" as in "Here" "Oh"

She goes all Japanese accent on it and removes the strong "R" in favor of the softer, almost "L". Like... "He" "Roh" (Loh? How ever you'd write the soft R sounding almost like an L). Which sounds very out of place because even Hiro's brother prounced it in English.

I tried finding a clip. There was one clip of her voice actor in the recording studio, but in that she says "Hero"... but I don't remember her ever saying "Hero" in the movie. It was very noticeable the first time she ever says his name. The trailer clip of her showing him the big pink dust explosion, it happens maybe a minute before that clip. It was the first time a character in the show didn't just say "Hero". And it just struck me. My brother noticed it as well right away.
