I'm going to go linksies on this one because it is a fairly extensive interview that already received a thorough writeup.

GAME Watch Interviews Tanaka and Komoto

Some new and interesting points:

* People beginning in Limsa Lominsa will start by arriving by sea as depicted in the trailer. This is only one example of how players can enter Eorzea depending on their starting area.
* Pre-rendered scenes and real-time footage were mixed in the trailer. Real-time footage was shown in the longest stretches, but overall, there was more pre-rendered material if you add up all the separate clips of it.
* Skillchains will be in FFXIV, both chains performed with other people and possibly ones you can do solo.
* Parties will be less restrictive and not penalize players for having too many or too few members.
* Excpect some familiar abilities to make a comeback; Komoto specifically references Flee, but says it might not necessarily be linked to Thief.
* Developers plan to have FFXIV support Windows 7, 64-bit systems, multicore processors and are trying to plan for how technology will have evolved by the game's release in 2010.
* Beta testing will begin for Windows PCs only. They will be conducted as focus groups that last around 3-4 hours at a time. This will be to iron out every little detail of the game utilizing player feedback. The next stage will be weekly tests that last a full 24 hours. After this, they will begin to stress test the servers by adding people in increments - they will start at 10,000 and double the amount for each subsequent test. Finally, after expanding the pool of testers to their liking, a full open beta will be initiated.

Thank you very much Elmer, this was a great interview and very informative. Also, thank you very much for your coverage of TGS, I enjoyed Corinth and your coverage very much.

There is one thing that I'm very shocked about; the decision to use DX9. It's a safe bet to be sure, everyone uses DX9 or higher now so you're not leaving anyone behind. But technologically speaking, DX9 is going to be a dinosaur in a year, not to mention eight (when XIV is the same age as XI). DX10 added quite a few functions that could have greatly improved appearance and production speed, whereas DX11, while experimental, will provide a very good super set of DX10.1 functions. While I was prepared to see them using DX9, honestly I was almost positive they would go with 10 or 11, if for no other reason than to be on the bloody edge.

I would also be interested to hear the justification for using 720p instead of 1080p for playstation. If they're going to have 1080 resolution for the PC, it wouldn't be much more work to expand to that for the playstation. Perhaps there is something in there that I do not understand, such as an increased difficulty to program at that resolution due to the playstation's architecture.

In terms of gameplay however, I hear only good things. Very much looking forward to what we will hear in the coming months. If that plan for beta is accurate, we should be hearing about a closed beta within two or three months at most. Overall, I'm very excited about what was said here.

Even though DirectX 10 was released almost three years ago, there are currently only 38 games that actually support it. The first game that was DirectX 10/10.1 exclusive was released just 6 months ago.

I thought FFXIV would support DX10 too, but you can't really say DX9 will be a dinosaur within a year...

Especially since both consoles utilize DX9 based Graphics cards, and than there is the fact that Vista never took off the way game developers wanted and a lot of gamers still use XP, they need to keep those players open. If it wasn't for me upgrading my PC this year, I wouldn't be able to play FFXIV on the PC if it was DX10 exclusive or based around it since my gaming PC still only has XP on it (going to upgrade windows 7 when it comes out next month with the 64bit client :)).

I like how they are approaching the beginning experience for FFXIV. The original FFXI was atrocius as a beginning experience because you were just planted in a world with next to no info on what you can do next. They remedied that in the past year with the new beginning quest systems, but actually having an immersive starting experience with its own campaign should make things both easier and more fun for newly starting players. It will also make you more attached to your nation this way.

As for the beta testing info. I like it :) this just the same way WoW does some of its beta testing for game mechanics. They first do focused testing groups so that players test while the developers are watching and than do a phased fine tuning system. This allows people to get a quick look at the game, and allows players quicker input for the developers on whether they are having fun or are engaged. One other huge bit of info in there, it seems they are aiming for a summer release client for FFXIV, which if it comes out to be true would mean 2 Final Fantasy's released within 3-7 months of each other in the EU and NA XD

This is a common misconception, one that I held myself for quite a while. Consoles have a graphics card embedded that shares chip architecture with a DX9 card. However, they utilize an embedded-systems specific implementation of OpenGL, not DX. As such, I very much doubt that this was considered at all for the decision to go with DX9.

I think that Arikussan is probably right, that it was the lack of DX10 compatible graphics cards and Operating Systems that decided which version they would use. As for why I said DX9 would be a dinasaur, I said that based purely on age and the number of more recent graphic libraries released since. You are most certainly correct that in a year DX9 will likely still hold it's spot at the top of the curve, but that's because no-one is willing to take that jump and make games for the more recent technology. Ah well, I'm not really complaining, just very surprised. After all, look at what they've managed to accomplish with DX9.

What I'm excited about is setting skills and wielding alternate weapons. You could have Flee as a thief skill, but be a tank and kite the heck out of a big mob that hits very hard, cast spells while swinging a sword, heal while being an archer, etc. The possibilities are going to be immense... or, so we hope from the description!

I'm gonna see how the specs turn out. Utilizing 9 instead of 11 (or even 10) gives me high hopes, though. If the specs are too high for my pricerange (I'll need a new desktop by release anyways, this one is olddd), then I'll just get it for PS3. I'll have to see.

As long as the people at Square are making the game, it will be gorgeous. Regardless of DX10, 9, a billion, whatever.

I kind of liked in LoTRO how there were little intro quests to quickly get you acuqainted with game mechanics. I think something like that for FFXIV would be nice. When I started FFXI, I was so insanely clueless (my first MMO). I had no clue what to do in any way shape or form. Thank altana for nice people.

Trueeee that, same thing with me. I kind of liked that ambiguity of being thrown to the wolves of the world... but a little more direction would have definitely been nice (they've added a little bit more by now).

I didn't play Everquest II for long, but I fell in LOVE with their tutorial start. Ironically, it takes place on a boat (which is speculated to be an intro/tutorial quest for getting to Eorzea). So I'm kind of hoping they took a page from the beginning of EQII, I thought that was perfect.

Awesome info!

I'm very happy to hear the info about the game's specs. I'm optimistic my gaming rig will be able to handle that, which means my fiancee will be able to join me in Eorzea after I get my PS3!

Very excited to see how this game turns out!

Tanaka laughs when recalling that some people think that the 200 possible slots in FFXI aren’t enough.

Funny, I would have thought that those complaints would have paled in comparison to the fact that there was only 6 lines in each macro. I understand some people were already working on their eleventh job at the time, but I believe it may have been a better improvement to add more lines than more macros.

This probably won't be a problem with the new macro (ability) system though since it sounds like gear will be less situational than it was in XI.

That's some excellent news. They're not limiting themselves to what the PS3 can do. I kind of hope they make textures of even higher detail than current PCs can handle, so that we can just dial up the settings as time goes on.

The goal is to design classes that are flexible. If a player wants to be an attacker, they can set more abilities suited to that. However, if their party needs a tank, they could set abilities for tanking instead and switch roles without switching classes.

Badass. This kind of just elaborates on what the last interview said, but this is definitely the stuff I want to hear about. Customization that goes way beyond subjobs.

Well, almost nothing runs at 1080p on the current-gen consoles. The reasoning is pretty simple: with 720p you're drawing about a million pixels per frame, while with 1080p you're drawing more than twice that. That's a major draw on resources that most people think are better spent on improving other aspects of the graphics.
