If you intend to play both... Why?

Sure, there are plenty of threads about "I'll definitely move right away" vs. "I'm going to hang back and wait for a while". But SE keeps talking about wanting people to be comfortable playing both at the same time, and I'm really curious... How many of you are there?

So the topic of this thread is: If you intend to play both simultaneously, why? And for how long?

Edited, Oct 21st 2009 11:02am by homeschoolzam

(Was going to include a poll, but that's apparently premium only. If you feel like it, pick your favorite response ghetto-poll style.)

Question: Will you play both, and if so, why?
1 - I'll stick with what I know, kthxbye.
2 - Probably play both briefly, then pick my favorite.
3 - I just can't abandon my linkshell. (But secretly I'm working on FFXIV and trying to talk them into joining me.)
4 - I've got plenty of time - I'll do end-game in FFXI and solo in FFXIV!
5 - OMGILOVEFF
6 - FFXI IS DYING! GASP!
7 - FFXI sucks. Here's hoping for a decent FFXIV.

After playing FFXI for about six years, and seeing where it winded up from where it started, I'll have to go with "7". I loved FFXI for a very long time, but then RMT started, which caused a lot of LS's to break up, etc. It started out great, I used to enjoy turning on my PS2 to play that game. But if you could see what my PS2 looks like now after playing FFXI for so long...I had to just quit. I couldn't deal with the crap, the fighting, the RMT, etc.

If you still have FFXI for PS2, do that ^^

I feel you on that Kachi, it came to a point one day that instead of me waking right up and booting up my PS2..I'd get up and be like "Damnit, I have to do an O Hat run, Dynamis, and 3 AF quests for my LS. That and I have to take care of my RL SON!". It got to a point that the game required more time than I could give, and I'd be damned if I let a MMORPG take over my RL.

But..that's the way the cookie crumbles, I guess.

Hi, my name is Skeptic, and I was addicted to FFXI for 6 years, I'm 3 years sober.

Seems like what you are basing your dislike of FFXI when RMT came into the game. I guess you have a bad memory, because they were around pretty much from the begining of the game. It got worse a year or two after the NA release and is actually MUCH less of an issue to gameplay today than it ever was.

Name me an MMO without RMT. I would love to see it. If you are choosing to not play FFXI because of RMT and are waiting for FFXIV, you are playing a pointless game. I can promise you right now, there will be RMT in FFXIV. There is literally no chance that there will not be. SE has shown with their improvements about the issue in XI they can keep their impact minimal, but they (or any other MMO developer) will never remove them completely.

As for the OP question, I guess I would have to choose "2 - Probably play both briefly, then pick my favorite." I plan on likely moving from XI to XIV, but I haven't played the game. I still really enjoy XI and XIV may cater to a different crowd and end up not being for me. So, I will start XIV with intentions of staying, but I am not deleting my XI character. I may go back.

Attempting to play both longterm would be too much of a timesink personally.

Thanks, but moving right along. Let's be reasonable, no one will have time to play both games, unless you literally have no life. I'm going to give FFXIV a shot, see how it goes after a few updates, and work from there. I will probably play long term because I've been dying to play another FF MMORPG for a while, and this is just Heaven Sent to hardcore FF fans.

I just hope they make a keyboard/controller (For PS3) like they did for Everquest on the PS2.

I would imagine that majority of the players are going to start playing XIV and leave the XI account active. When and if the decision needs to be made between the two, players will cancel the one they decide to leave behind. I'm sure there will be a few who play both though.

7 i would say, but I wouldn't say FFXI sucks. I am hoping SE fixes their customer services problems. And hoping that 14 is alot more casual.

I used to be a hardcore ffxi addict when I was in my younger 20s and would never log off most of the time. I got older (almost 30), married, job, kids,.... just not enough time for everything. I got so far behind on the ToAu and WoTG missions that I said forget it. Plus the fact that no one wants to help after they have done those missions. It gets pretty pointless logging in unless you want to fish, craft, or merit; which I have no interest in whatsoever.

Well said. Hardcore MMORPG players will most likely run both FFXI and FFXIV at the same time on different consoles, for sure. I've had a couple of friends tell me while they're waiting for a NM to pop or an event to start they'll solo a bit in FFXIV. Although the option becomes available to split time, I doubt it will happen. I see both games being run at the same time for a while on different consoles until FFXI dies down.

This..

Like I stated earlier, I used to LOVE FFXI, up until the part explained in bold in that quote. I really hope FFXIV will be more time-friendly for people that have a Job, Children, a normal life. I never finished CoP because everyone I knew already did it, and didn't want to do it again. So I was forced to craft, or Merit, or help out other people because I was unable to find others interested in doing the quests/missions I would've liked to get done. I don't feel we should be forced to do things we'd really like to stay away from just because others cannot help, or because they've already done it.

If they offer up some sort of package deal in which you can keep your FFXI content IDs for only a few more dollars a month in addition to FFXIV's fees, then I will play both, at least for a while.

Regardless of what happens with my FFXI career, I would be pretty disappointed if I could never log on and see San d'Oria or sea or whatever again. This is the whole reason I still have my old PS1 and PS2 Final Fantasy games (and Chrono Trigger/Cross) for my backwards compatible PS3, and will never sell them; sometimes the sense of nostalgia I get from playing old FF games is a feeling without equal.

Basically, as long as the fees are reduced and coupled with FFXIV, I will still play every now and again, if for no better reason than to just run around and enjoy the views.

Agreed. I just wonder what the Level Cap will be at and if "leveling" will be too easy. In all MMOs I've always been a tank, but honestly I think I'm going to try different jobs in FFXIV. I was in the process of leveling MNK in FFXI, and I loved the job. I hope that everything we have been hoping and wishing for pops up in FFXIV, this is a real serious moment for Final Fantasy MMORPG players everywhere.

If not, we'll go to Japan and Boycott, eh?

I too played the game for a long long time in fact I had a play time counter of about 350 days which when I think about it makes me cringe. I did not even play the game for 6 years...couse then that number would not seem that bad hehe.
I recently had a relapse after 3-4 years of being sober and spent a few weeks back in Gilgamesh... but without my main character (gave it away) it just seemed like I could not score anything good to keep me hooked :).

Now more to the point, I am very much waiting for FFXIV to come out as it seems it will have all the FFXI things I loved wrapped in a new shinny baggy that SE is going to get me hooked on once again. I do not plan to play FFXI again but I will play FFXIV and I think I have learned enough from FFXI to not burn myself out in 3 years this time. Id like to think I am older and wiser I guess and that this game will not have the same hold on me as FFXI did.

I broke my own rule once..I had one of those "I freakin quit this game, ARRGGGHHHHH! ::Throw Control::" moments and really quit for like a good, eh, year. It was a pre-quit, and a lot of you guys know what that is, one of those "I'm quitting, but I'm going to keep my gear on here jusstttt in casssee.." kind of quits? So after a year I came back, most of my friends quit, my only LS was broken, and the price jump was so nuts I put it away for good. Sold all my stuff, gave the Gil to my remaining LS mates that I passed into, and that's it. I can't lie, I miss the hell out of FFXI..but it's just behind me now.

And I say we start a FFXIV-aholics ASAP.

I wish they would make a console non-mmo version of FFXIV. Something akin to what phantansy star did when it first came out. The reason for that is, that after FFXI, I will never commit to another MMO. Like others have noted, these games take up a severe amount of time and in some cases, it can take over your life to get the best gear.

Maybe after I retire in the way future, I'll play FFXXXVI as my next MMO.

I'm going with 2. I can't play two online games at once for some reason, I always choose one over the other. If FFXIV is great or shows potential, I'll play it. If not, I'll keep playing FFXI and check back on XIV every few months.

Hey Salvage only takes 100 minutes and Nyzul Isle less than 30 per run. Sure you have to do an assload of them to get gear (especially Salvage), but at least SE is showing improvements in comparison to older events like Dynamis and Sky.

2.

I would imagine that majority of the players are going to start playing XIV and leave the XI account active. When and if the decision needs to be made between the two, players will cancel the one they decide to leave behind. I'm sure there will be a few who play both though.

I deactivated my FFXI ID's in June 08. What I'm planning is to play FFXIV, see how it goes, then make my choice. If it hits me as FFXI did, then I'll stay, otherwise I'm going home to Vanadiel.

FFXI has always had RMT, as has every other game, but they problem is the way that the economy is structured. The RMT in WoW, while annoying, don't have a crippling effect on the economy the same way they do/did in FFXI. I personally haven't ran around Vana'diel in almost a year now but I'll be picking up FFXIV when it launches.

I tried to get back into FFXI on 3 separate occasions but having lost all of my friends and, as a result, all of my reputation, it was impossible to find a group for anything. It was like I was starting the game fresh except I had 2 jobs over 70 so I was stuck doing petty little things like attacking walls for nominal exp for hours on end.

I agree to an extent with the OP but I also think that because so many people are connecting FFXIV to FFXI a lot of the playerbase will be ex-FFXI, which will make for a bit of a closer-knit community than say WoW.

Apparently there's a motivational concept (coined by Csikszentmihalyi) called "flow," which as far as I can tell relates heavily to FFXI and games like it. But basically it says that if something is too hard, you won't do it, and even when you have a zone of optimal challenge (not too easy, not too hard) that allows you to get into this "flow" (where time seems to fly when you're doing something engaging), inevitably you can only do something for so long before it becomes boring. If you increase the challenge, you can extend the longevity, of course, but FFXI has no hard mode.

It does. It's called shouting for an AV or Pandy warden group in a starter city.

NOW THAT'S A HARD MODE.
