Seriously, when the "Rapture" prank broke out last year people were so excited about the possibility of having Viera or Moogle characters...So what happened SE? Why would they fail to include something that got such positive feedback and hype? FFXIV is a new game, so include some new things!! So far it seems that characters aren't even customizable like they are in many new MMORPGS :( Am I the only one who is really disjointed by this??

How can we pass such judgment on Customization when we have yet to even see the finished product? Viera was a Race in Final Fantasy XII, and that's where it ends. There are people that would like playable races such as kimahri's race from FFX, but does that mean we will get it? Nope. I think this time around SE may be more focused on Game Play than what races you can play. And if you really think about it, wouldn't you prefer it that way? If they put all their time into how many things MORE we can customize, and how many cool new races we'd like to have in there, what time would they have to make the game play itself..better?

Just my personal opinion.

I actually like the idea, to a point. I would to see all final fantasy non-mob character types (race) be available in a new FF MMO. However, it will not happen in this game and I think that's ok.

To me, SE is trying make FFXIV the FFXI we really wanted, but with its own story. I would like to think that the development of a FFXIV follow-up FF MMO would be like an ultimate FF game; all inclusive of all familiar FF themes and unimaginable expansiveness. Think about characters able to create there own towns and even create there own missions, removing many NPCs creating a never ending story. FF ULTIMA. Would be very interesting...`8~D (Head explodes from possiblities)

Ha well I am actually a female, and I really liked the Viera, not because they were scantily clad or because I'm a pubescent boy, but because they were just a strong female race/species. It's nice to see that every now and then... yeh Mithra are cute, but they can be a bit silly with all that purring and crap.

And I would say it's an educated guess that there isn't much customization with the characters, seeing as how they look exactly the same(in terms of hair and face structure) to the last FF MMO, but I would be pleasantly surprised it there was some customization :)

I LOVED the FF12 races. If they can recreate 11's races and rename them, why not 12's too?
Even before there was talk of 14 I wished I could play one of FF12's moogles. And they would have the advantage that the art director from 12 is doing 14 as well. They wouldn't have to redesign a whole lot since they already had quite a few character models for each race.

I can certainly agree with this for X-XIII, but I'm curious what your arguments are for IX and VIII. In particular, IX's decidedly deformed and stylistic art seems more tailored towards the pre and post pubescent <edit>horny little fanboi</edit> demographics, depending on how you spin it.

I'm not saying give everything that people ask for, but from a basic business perspective if there is a lot of enthusiasm for something, do it. Adding a few new races wouldn't offset the game, its not a crazy demand. This is a NEW game, why aren't we seeing any new races? It would give the game a NEW feel, which is what I'm looking for after 4 years of FFXI.

So how about focusing on things that actually matter like combat instead of adding million races that affect the gameplay in 0 way. I'm sure that, for example, a completely revamped crafting feature would give the game a NEWER feel than some new animal humanoid race.. put focus on the players' ideas for too long and you'll have a game with new races and combat we've seen million times before. Yeah, they could add new races, more customization, new graphic style and so on but with the exchange of other features lacking somehow.

New races and jumping.. or a new combat system? Time is money, the developers pick the more important one. Which is it for you?

That's something your taking for granted.
There are all walks of player-types, combat is only top priority to a handful.

Or so they like to think...

I'd guess that something the players do 80% of their playtime would have more significance than easthetics. Maybe if the person is shallow, things like new races matter more than that, but to me that only tells about idiocy.

I'll add leveling progress, crafting and grouping dynamics to the list as well. I think it would matter more to make these features the top priority rather than focusing on animating a new race. Are people really willing to sacrifice these things to see bunnies in-game? Y'all got your priorities right there!

I don't get it. Square Enix is very creative with their games, so why the hell just redo all of XI's races? Why clone the damn storyline? Why not go into something new?!?!

Time used in making up whole new races from 0 = time taken from focusing on other features that might actually affect the gameplay. It only seems they have their priorities right. Too bad only thing we'll see is "no new races wtf SE QQ" and not the fact that some other feature in game (like combat perhaps) is much better thanks to the extra dev time given to it.

That's better, surely. At least your giving some validity to career crafters now. But your still not accepting the full flush of gamer-types in favor of your own perceptions.

Think about it this way.
The Sims is the best selling PC game in history. What does it's gameplay consist of? Combat? Group Dynamics? Leveling Progress? Whether or not you actually like the Sims is non-issue. There's obviously enough human beings out there willing to vote with their wallets to support games that focus on things outside of your scope.

Your resources argument is non-issue.
Game designers are not waffling about indecisively during production, every nuance of gameplay has been documented threefold in a mountain of word and excel documents the size of a small child at this point. Adding anything aesthetically isn't affecting gameplay development one iota, because that had to be mostly set in stone before anyone even thought of starting to build the game.

It's not that this stuff doesn't take time. It's just that the billions of dollars that is necessary to support a 5 year development cycle of an AAA title is so unimaginably staggering what your doing is tantamount to becoming hysterical over a housefly.

The Sims actually consist almost entirely of Level Progression. You level your family members' skills while maintaining both your physical attributes (Hunger, Entertainment, Cleanliness, etc) and a healthy social standing to do better at your job to make more money to buy more stuff. It isn't aesthetics that sells Sim games*. No amount of pretty graphics and customization will sell a game if the actual gameplay is poor.

The same goes for Final Fantasy Online. Aesthetics won't make or break the game. Whether they make it like the WWE games where your characters are 100% customizable or like Final Fantasy 6 where your characters are completely static won't matter if combat mechanics are so boring or tedious that people can't stand looking at their pretty characters that they spent hours customizing.

Combat mechanics are a much higher priority for everyone in this genre of gaming, whether they realize it or not. No amount of pretty can save a game with poor mechanics/gameplay/combat engine, but a game with 16bit graphics with great mechanics can still be an amazing game.

* Unless you play with money cheat codes, at which point you're not really playing the games.

Also: "Pokemon Red, Blue & Green" are the best selling games of all time, which have poor graphics, even for Gameboy games, but a pretty good combat engine.

I could easily say that it was started due to the likes of both of you.
