A scan has leaked from this week's Famitsu that reveals some of the equipment that will be made available to Gladiator and Pugilist. Square Enix will most likely update the official site tomorrow for foreign fans, but you can read on for a sneak peek!

Good job pal. Thank you very much. Maybe you can use defensive knuckles to tank and attack knuckles to deal damage!

I'm digging the styles of armor. I'm not a huge heavy armor fan but that gladiator looks pretty cool. The weapons also look sessy. I can't wait.

Seeing that the campaign code is for a FF14 item, hopefully that means the release date for 14 is sooner than we think. /em crosses fingers.

Hmm, so different variations on each weapon suggests even more customization possibilities. I like that.

Mind you, FFXI had the same variations and they made no practical difference (except for shields after a couple years, and some very rare exceptions among weapons). But something tells me that's not the case this time.

From what we have learned so far, Gladiator is both a paladin and a warrior, while at the same time, neither a paladin nor a warrior. As far as we know, based purely on the information that has been released so far, Gladiator is the word used to describe one who wields a sword (it is unclear at this time if Gladiator is being used to describe both two-handed and one-handed swords; this article implies that hand-and-a-half swords are in the realm of Gladiator, as well as one-handed short swords). If you want to play a paladin in FFXIV, very likely you will be playing a Gladiator who has access to white magic (there has been a bit of information released about crossover classes being possible through equipment granting spells and abilities).

We can take that one step further by asking: what is a paladin? Is it a job that uses a sword and holy magic? Or is it a job that uses a sword and is highly defensive? Or is it both? We have information implying (but again not directly telling us) that different weapons within a class of weapons (short-sword for instance) will give very different abilities. So a paladin may be a Gladiator with a defensive sword and defensive shield.

As you can see, everything is very fluid right now. You can't really say a Gladiator is a paladin or a warrior, but you can't say it's not either.

UPDATE: Magazine has been retrieved.

Only the two leaked pages are in it, and from the looks of it, they just contain the official descriptions. So, if Square Enix follows the pace they set last time, the pictures and info should be up on the official site within another 5-10 hours.

I don't know what other games may be similar to FFXIV in terms of weapon/armor repair and combat. While playing Demon's Souls I keep thinking about FFXIV in regard to the way armor and weapons wear as well as controlling offensive and defensive tactics using both main and offhand.

There are some hints on the updated site about the different attributes of the various equipment. Sounds like Hora will degrade quickly but are "imbued with the instincts and ferocity" of beasts, which could mean a lot of things. Baghnakhs will apply some kind of status effects. I didn't pick up much from the sword descriptions apart from the usual quick/weak versus slow/powerful. Although the lantern shield seems to have some interesting traits...

I'm curious as to how the lantern shields for gladiators work. From what I read in the description it combines both offensive and defensive features. Do you think that means good for shield bashing? Or maybe a range weapon that's a shield/deathly frisbee kinda thing?

The image that accompanied the description looked awkward to carry around. What do you guys think?

Edit: Ah, I posted this before checking out another thread on the site update discussing the same thing. Sorry about that!

I'm looking forward to Lancer myself.

The funny thing is, most of the descriptions I've read for the Disciples of War would suggest they get some kind of throwing weapon.

The only one missing an entry is Marauder, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get throwing axes of some kind.

I noticed the same thing.

Looks to me like SE's actually putting Throwing to some use this time around.

This, it always annoyed me that the different weapons in XI didn't have different attributes associated with the weapon build.

What I'm wondering, is if certain weapon types give you access to different abilities. It's safe to assume that a 1 handed sword makes you a gladiator. Well, what if your abilities depended on the type of weapon you use, as a gladiator? Short sword vs long sword. Or any other variety. I think it would add a crazy amount of depth and customization to each person's taste and style.

Well one thing did come to mind when I read the lantern sheid discription, could this be the path to redmagelike skills? Elemental offencive and defencive power.. still missing the healing spells but there might be a "holy" power equivilant shield yet to be relealed.

I really like the look of the armor so far. Square Enix really knows how to create good looking armor. The Gladiator reminds me a bit of the Paladin AF armor. So far, the gladiator class sounds like a lot of fun if we really are able to switch between offensive and defensive playstile. Also, the lantenr shield has caught my attention. I'm really looking forward to see how this shield can be used.

The Monk type class looks cool too. Even though the armor looks a bit like some mixture of corsair and monk from FXI :)

I'm excited to see the next jobs they are going to present.
