Ok so SE has said FFXIV will be released for the PS3 and PC. Now does any one think it'll ever come to the 360?

My completely baseless guess is that it will probably eventually, if it does well and is worth SE's time to port it. Too big of an audience to ignore completely if they can get the game marketing up enough to capture some of it.

They're probably smart starting with computer, but they may have missed their market with PS3. For PS2 its true that the RPG people went more towards it and XBox was more the FPS type people, but 360 has stolen a lot of that crowd because PS3 was prohibitively expensive compared to what you got out of it, and lots of companies made the correct prediction and made their games for 360 instead. (more games means more audience, more audience means more games)

You're looking at the wrong market, SE's primary market is and always will be Japan. In Japan, no one wants the 360. It saw some popularity because of Tales of Vesperia and Idolm@ster, but plenty of games that were best sellers here are in the bargain bin in Japan because no one wants them. Even the PS2 routinely outsells the 360 there.

Yeah the NA crowd for XI seemed to gravitate towards the PC, whereas the JPN crowd stayed very true to the Sony console. So it makes sense to both markets to hit those 2 systems first. But as I posted elsewhere, since it's using the Crystal Tools engine, there's no technical reason it can't be done, and I'm guessing it will. The only possible reason I see SE Never porting it would be if they had a poor experience with MS and FFXI, and I've certainly never seen anything to indicate that.

FFXIV for everyone, I say!

I would say eventually it's a possibility, but looking at how 360 handles FFXI, especially with besieged, I doubt it'd be a good idea to port FFXIV. Especially assuming how eager MS is to try and fix problems with FFXI.

I don't think SE is going to go out of their way to bring this game to the 360. Microsoft kind of alienates themselves though, with how hard they push for the *pay to play* xbox live memberships. I remember back when they first were putting it on the 360, it was a pretty big battle to let the game function over a silver membership, and I don't think Microsoft was ever happy with that arrangement.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made a big deal out of it this time around, and SE just said "You know what? Then I guess we just can't do business" and left it at that. Less headache for SE, not working with a company that is so unresponsive like Microsoft.

Makes sense, but I think Microsoft will either eventually come to its senses, or would have had to wait because Sony has exclusive rights for a time. The fact that its on Windows, and not 360 points to the gold membership argument.

Something that caughty my atention during in SEs presence of 360s E3, was that they near enough ignored FFXI'd exsistance.

They themselves said something like "This will be the first Final Fantasy title to make its way to the xbox 360 console!" talking about 13.

Let's face it though, FFXI 360 wasn't THAT big a hit as far as I understand. And it's probably safe to say, the masses were more hypnotised at ToAU at the time.

However porting from PC to 360 is a relatively easy task, as they both use the same DirectX API, in fact if it's a Game For Windows title, it even comes with 360 controller coding built in. And if its a LIVE title it'll even have achievements.

This also makes for a good E3 or TGS anouncement in to future, because unless they go all out and pop FFXV next year, they probably wont have much else to show providiing 13 is already out

Well Tretton said "Only console you will be able to play it on in 2010" so the possibilities of it coming to xbox 360 is there.

11:56 FFXIV will be coming to the PS3 & PC. They are currently considering other hardware (including Microsoft hardware!)

Port to 360 might come afterall.

The PS2 routinely outsells the 360 and PS3 everywhere. It's only second to the Wii. Cost > HD in the general population.

But I think there will still be a port to 360. NA is a large part of FFXI and many play on 360. Ignoring them is a big segment of their fan/player base even if they are more JP-centric.

Why do people even bring up this "360 membership argument" there is no argument, you can play FFXI on a free silver account.

Allow me to back this up with actual numbers. The latest Japanese sales numbers I have are these:

May 18 - 24, 2009
DSi - 33,833
PSP - 27,536
Wii - 16,233
PS3 - 10,932
DSL - 5,631
PS2 - 4,075
X360 - 3,854

As you can see, the 360 is indeed very undesirable.

I think that was PS3's worst week on sales of the year.

Makes me wonder, if the EU were to release their own console next gen, lets say Ubisoft for example, a French company currently impartial to the other companies out there. Would we do what the JP have done, and shun other markets to back ourselves?

Just because you can play FFXI on a silver membership (and you have to be pretty out of touch with the history of the game if you don't know that SE had to battle M$ to make it that way), doesn't mean that they are going to easily concede to ANOTHER game that doesn't require their money sink membership.

If anything would cause SE to pause when considering releasing this for the 360, that would be it. We are potentially looking at a game where the only fee to play is paid to SE on two other platforms, and one of the only two games you would be able to play online with a silver membership (FFXI being the other). Are there any other MMOs on the 360 that work over silver?

Someone would be losing money, whether it's SE paying a royalty to cut out the need for us to have Gold (cost would be passed to us somehow, and would be shouldered by those who aren't 360 players as well which isn't fair), or us having to get the gold membership which wouldn't please anyone who doesn't play Halo or other 360 online titles and doesn't see the value.

If it's released for a Microsoft console it will probably be the next one, not the 360. By the time this game has been out 6 months Microsoft will have released their new machine.
