Serious question: after all the brady guides failed (the atlas lacking half the zones), will anyone actually get it for FFXIV?

Yes, just so I can reference how bad it is a year or so after FFXIV releases.

If it's free with the game or under 5 bucks I might. Some of my chairs aren't level.

I think the guide was somewhat useful when starting out. It had maps and quest guides, at least. If anything, it will make a good coaster.

i used the **** out of that guide. the manager at gamestop sold it to me for $1 because the cover was torn. pretty useful for a dollar since it was pretty annoying logging off and on to check allakhazam. so, yeah i will get it. hopefully they package it with the game for a discount.

That book was my Bible. I was so amped about reading through it everyday. It made me want to be a PLD/DRK. It just made it sound like such an epic combination. lol.

Oh most definitely. Without the Brady Guide I would never have known that RDMs get Cure V at lv. 73, that RDMs can also be an effective tank, and that NIN/RDM is secretly a very 1337 combination that can destroy mobs and make you super awesome. But seriously, I used this guide nonstop, and I gotta say the info on job abilities, job traits, quests, and some other things really did enhance my playing (just take any spell list with a grain of salt xD). So I'll probably grab the guide, use it until a major database like FFXIclopedia arises, and then laugh at how painfully ignorant i was.

These are actually true in some cases, as is PLD/DRK. The brady guide was actually so far ahead of its time that we are just recently figuring out it was right. :O

Im definitely getting the guide if only for the artwork, monster listing and coaster when I need a nice cold drink. >.>

Seriously though, for all its horrible flaws, it was useful early on... except for the 'recomendations' it gave for jobs. Fun to look back on it though, hopefully in there next guide they won't make suggestions like that for a constantly changing game and just stick to the basic premise that makes each job and not what the community at the time feels it should be doing. (and in the case of BST, that which never was till they made it that way from all the noobs XD "BST leaches your party EXP don't party with it!")

I'm in favor of this, as long as the general style is similar to a tourist's guide (disclaimer that information may be out of date, moderately irrelevant commentary about things, and the like).

In fact, I'll volunteer Jinte to help with it.

Agreed, some situations do call for these. I'm just saying the guide makes them seem more viable in normal play than they actually are.

But Pikko...we already do, except the chapters are found in the different forum headings and the book tends to evolve, which is important for MMOs because their potential to evolve is such a huge part of their appeal.

@OP: The fact that MMOs evolve is the main reason why I wouldn't dream of paying for a hard copy of a strategy guide based on the state of a game at release. So much of what works and doesn't work is based as much (if not more) on how players make use of the game mechanics, not the way the game mechanics are described in a manual or a tooltip. Specific details like mobs/mob behavior/drops/quests don't take long to show up on forums and if the information that first shows up is wrong, it doesn't take long before it's corrected.

Brady is bad.

It had a lot of good information but I agree with a lot of people... overall it was barely passable as a decent guide.

Everything I learned I learned through trial and error or websites.

The reason that having an original guide is good is because they are a fun time capsule. Watching online games evolve over time is magical, and revisiting the original guides, game manual and box itself is charming.

If you install Warcraft III, don't patch it and play a custom game against the CPU, look what drops from all the creeps. Goblin Mines, huge exp tomes, all sorts of stuff that has long long been deemed imba and patched over. Good times.

That guide was my bible... Until its started to constantly be outdated, and for a strategy guide... to purposely leave out information about missions past rank 5, and some info was still left out beside of that. not very effective in the end...
Still, also nice to have one.

For me the Brady guide was a part of the whole experience of playing FFXI (and an MMO) for the first time and it was a magical experience. There's no way I'm gonna start FFXIV without the Brady guide. It'll end up in the closet collecting dust for years, but only after I've read every word on every page and enjoyed it thoroughly.

I dunno, the Brady guide was really helpful to me for the longest time thanks to the comprehensive list of what mobs were agressive and to what sense. Also, the skillchain guide was, while confusing at times, a great boon to finding a skillchain for the rest of your partymates.

It was because of the Brady guide that I thought that I could do Nin/Sam back in the day. I still think the idea of it sounds cool though. Haha.

Bunch of mother@#%^ing blasphemers in this thread. Here's the order:

Brady > SE > That kid that lives next door > lolwiki > allakhazam.

When people ask which came first, FFXI or The Guide, it's a rhetorical question. This ain't no egg«-»chicken deal.

The idea of toilet paper is to remove **** from your ***, not to add more on it.
