Materia in the artwork on FFXIV site? (and Home Point)Follow

When you scroll all the way to the right of the image you see a little Tarutaru? BLM? sitting there with a belt on the table just behind it holding some magical looking crystals. Maybe some sort of new equipment similar to materia?

Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but that huge crystal in the artwork looks like it might be a home point crystal! Looks pretty cool, if so.

Yeah. I'm really thinking this is a possibility. People really seem to want a different way of using magic (not having to pay for each spell), maybe you'll be able to start questing more spells and getting drops from MOBs. I think the idea of materia dropping is less fantastical than a magic scroll dropping and somehow being undamaged.

Maybe they'll start having 'materia' for magic and instead of having all their spells at once, mages will have to start selecting which spells to start a fight with. (They'd have to limit gear swapping in combat.)

What exactly is materia?

It's basically a magic system that was used in FFVII and maybe other FFs? Your gear (really just bracer) has materia slots that you can put these little orbs in and you get the magic spell from it. i.e. Cure, Haste, Blizzard

Look like tathlum to me. Could technically throw them before SE changed them.

ok, i found the image, and honestly, it looks like those are potions. i freaking with they are some sort of throw to a "Materia"esque system, but i doubt it. SE hasn't proven themselves to be that smart. but it would kick *** if it were, even if they just let us slot weapons. i can imagine that some of the materias would fetch quite the price... and i'd hope that they would be Bazaar only... that way RMT has a harder time taking advantage of them.

materia would be an interesting twist and would work pretty well if they are actually changing up the leveling/job system based on weapon selection. Slot types of materia to your weapon to "specialize" your "job." that would make for some interesting combos... which after a few years would get whittled down to max/min standards, but would still be interesting.

It sounds like they're mixing in aspects of FF9 (learn abilities through weapons) and some FF7 (materia for spell casting). Now as far as increasing character stats such as STR, DEX, VIT, MND, INT, CHR, my guess is that will come from wearing different styles of armor.

Now as for the "level" of the armor....I'm thinking that they're going to do it like..."in order to be able to equip this piece of body armor, you must have at least 15 STR and 10 VIT, and will have a max of 20 STR and 15 VIT that you can attain by wearing that armor. Once those caps are reached, you're due for some new armor.

That's my wild guess, anyhow....

They look like tathlums to me... like morion/phatom.

Materia in FF7 is just another incarnation of powered crystals in the FF series. It is virtually the exact same thing as magicite in other FF games, only in FF7 it seems to have been artificially manufactured for the purpose of using in weapons, though natural materia could be used the same way.

I'm sure if the thought occurred to the people in any FF, they could use materia in any FF game the same way it's used in FF7.
