I've been playing FFXI on Diabolos since the game was released on NA PC. Since then, on TS and Vent and even at Fanfest 2007, I've heard so many different pronunciations of the game names, titles, and even my own server. Some ppl pernounced it as DI-AAA-BLOOS, some Dia-bolos, some as it should be Diab-los.
(Forgive my inability to properly break down pronunciations)

So anyways, I think we should all start to decide on the way the name of our new world should be pronounced. I belive it is pretty self evident, but after hearing a friend pronounce Magicite as "Magi-Kite", dI have my doubts in ppls overall understanding in proper english.

Then again it may be my pronunciation that's wrong in certain regions, so here is my idea of the Pronunciation:

A-or-ze-ah

Seems like the best way, but sure enough someone will com along and say:

E-oh-arr-zeh-aa

I think you had it mostly correct, OP. One of the things I like about Japanese is that it's almost impossible to mispronounce a word, and as the trailer had JP subtitles reading "エオルゼア (Eoruzea),″ I can state with confidence that it's pronounced "Eh-or-zay-ah."

The one thing I like about JP games is that when it comes to names, there's no room for interpretation.

The JP name is "エオルゼア" which is pronounced " ei - ou - ru: - zei - a:". This means this is also correct for pronouncing in the english version.

*Edit* ALso note that often for things that JP wish to make just an "r" sound for, they put "る" in place of it since there is no such thing as a plain JP consonant. So that soft "u" sound is pretty much nonexistent and isn't pronounced.

The people who have given the transliterations are of course right, and I think in this case that's the way it's going to stay, but I'd like to point out that many things in FFXI are borrowed from other languages for flavor - pronunciation would vary depending on the language it was supposed to approximate.

Then again, in the vast majority of the languages I've experience with, the vowels sound as described from the Japanese here.

Of course, there's also the issue of whether the emphasis is on the 'OR' or the 'ZAY'. I like e-or-zea better personally.

When I first heard it I pronounced it E-or-zuh but either way I think Vana'diel sounds much better than Eozrea.

I just hope the opening CS to the game will feature voice acting like FFXI's does, and include the spoken line, "...and that land is called 'Eorzea.'" Problem solved~

Based purely on the japanese word, I'd say:
E - Like the first in Extreme
orz
ea - like Extreme + ah

Being italian helps, sometimes.

Seconded.

Though I'm sitting here repeating it out loud over, and over. There's something much more natural about "(y)-Eh-or-zay-ah."

However you pronounce it, it's a crappy name. There is no majesty in Eorzea. Sounds like a cold remedy for donkeys.

Somehow I doubt that would help. The opening CS in FFXI pronounces Bastok wrong/odd. "Bas-took" I don't know anyone who speaks English who would read it and say it that way; "Bas-tock"

That's exactly how I pronounced it the first time I read it. Almost sounds french to me. But from what they're saying this isn't the world's name, it's only the name of the continent.

Edit

Just so I'm not talking out of my ***, here's the post where I found that lil tidbit: Clicky Clicky

Well the japanese pronunciation seems to be eh-o-roo-zeh-ah "Eoruzea". Think of the 'roo' as kangaroo. The Ru character seems to have a slight 'd' sound to it. My assumption of the English pronunciation would be eh-orr-zeh-ah.

I can't help but think it's on purpose, to emphasise cross-nationality?
Even if we're given a correct pronounciation, it would vary with dialects anyway.

Ey-or-zey-uh is how I read the word, but I'm more inclined to pronounce it as ey-er-za for some reason ^^ Most likely my local accent influencing things there~
