Who would like to see shadows removed from FFXIV? That doesn't necessarily mean no ninja job - it could just have other skills.

But a game without shadows...

Could be a more intense and worthwhile challenge.

They lose the shadows. Done.

The playerbase will find something new to exploit.

And come FFXV you'll want them to take that out only to be replaced by something else.

See the 'should there be subjobs' thread for more people railing against /NIN supremacy.

While I feel that it's perfectly reasonable to have a tanking class that mitigates damage (PLD, to a lesser extent WAR) and one that avoids damage (NIN, or evasion/counter abilities like SAM or MNK have), I don't think shadows are necessary. I would not begrudge them being given to certain job(s), but the current state of affairs with the subjob system (or a skill-tree system as many have mentioned) combined with the great perks shadows have over DEF is really contrary to the spirit of variation within the game.

It's too late to change it now, but I wonder if /NIN would be nearly as omnipresent if Utsusemi and Dual Wield did not come from the same sub, making it often both the strongest defensive and strongest offensive sub available. Would there be more variation among players - the extra safety of shadows vs the extra dagger for SATAWS as thief, for example? Would things remain largely the same, with DDs enhancing their damage to the exclusion of all else and just making the lack of shadows the healer's problem?

There is exploiting... and then there is SE designing events and mobs that basically require you to have them... or 40 WHM's.

You'll know you have skill when you can't feel your *** anymore.

Show me someone who says mages can not melee and I will show you someone who has not seen the actions of Gandalf The White at the battle of Minis Tirith.

I think SE will design it better in that they will come out with more than 1 tank right away. It might be a refined Ninja or some other job that uses shadows, but I don't think they will lose shadows.

The only 'true' tank job I've levelled to 75 (twice) has been PLD. I hate the "YOU HAVE TO USE SHADOWS" NMs. On my Elvaan I had to come to events as RNG or BRD, but when my Hume got levelled the mentality had shifted, but you had to sub RDM or NIN to be really effective. I levelled PLD cause I wanted to be a blood tank, not because I still wanted to have to blink it. They should make VIT and DEF worth a ****, not have to have it almost to 999 before it's good. I haven't tanked in a long time, though, and I'm kind of not too sorry it turned out that way.
