Square-Enix has just announced at their press conference that characters from FFXI cannot be transferred to FFXIV. Hopefully this can put all speculation of this ridiculous idea to rest.

Q: Will FFXI characters be portable to XIV in any way?

A: The game is completely different. There will not be any XI character transfers to XIV. However, the character design is familiar and XI players will be able to create a similar character.

Yeah, it was a bit over the top to think it could happen.

I understand that people have spent alot of time on thier XI characters and feel that it would be ashame to loose them. But really, this game needs to be more than a front end update of XI: sure i'd like to keep the elements of FFXI that keep me coming back for more (if XIV is too easy or has a weak story i won't be playing it) but whats the point of a new world to explore if everythings going to be [too weak]?

This should be a new adventure, hopefully we don't lose the friendships we made in XI (something i consider more important than my gear and character, is my ingame friends) but we should be looking forward to exploring and learning about this new world with them, rather than hoping for a copy of the old one, but with a pretty new look.

Yup friendlist will be transferable, so that helps with the keeping friendships deal, besides there's always sites, emails, IM, phones, to be exchanged for that.

can't wait for XIV

I think FFXIV is better be seen as a new Final Fantasy game with better technology rather than a simple successor to FFXI. But technology is not everything, the key is still the game play.

They say it many times that FFXI will be in service as long as there are enough people playing. No one is losing any toons .... yet. Although I am more worried about getting new players to FFXI after FFXIV coming out; it will all depends on how good is FFXIV is.

People should think before bringing up such a ridiculous notion: transferring characters from an old game to a new one, in a new world, with a new job system would be the equivalent of watching someone in any game start it for the first time with a maxed-out character bought off eBay. High-level n00bs would abound.

I'm personally looking forward to creating someone new and watching people level to the top from the start. It's always so refreshing to play a new MMO from the start like this.

What's more important to me is the transfer of the community. It would be nice if the servers had the same names. That way we'd run into a lot of the same people we played with before by picking the same server name (or you could pick a different server name if you don't want this).

Although FFXIV is looking great, I'm just hoping they don't make the monthly high much higher than they have it in XI ;; Can't see myself paying double what I already am paying, monthly fees like to stack up fast D: No qualms about paying $80 for the main game though and $40 per expansion, meh, monthly fees are the killers ~_~;
drk = 80 sam = 76
pld = 79 thf= 80
nin = 80 drg = 75
mnk = 76 war = 52

Retired for now ^ ***** you Abyssea. FFXIV woo eh..
