We all know that the races are going to be similar, but what about a new race.

Personally I'd like to see something like the Viera from FFXII.

Yeah I would love to see some Viera too. Would diversify the mithra players.

You'd think if they'd added a new race they'd make sure to advertise it - a cameo in the teaser sequence, on the site's banner, or something. They did say the races weren't going to be the same as they were in XI, so maybe even though it waddles like a Tarutaru and /panics like a Tarutaru, it might not nuke like a Tarutaru.

It's very likely that there will be at least one new race. If you look at the smaller character in the back in the far left of the large scrolling image on the teaser site, you see a small child-like character with small horns. I believe there was a race like that in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Edit: Here you go, the race was called Gria. http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Gria

They also first appeared in Final Fantasy Tactics A2, not the original.

Oh if there are any races. They will save their best for last....You know how SE loves having secrets. Its impressive they've kept a sealed tight mouth for 4 years of development.

It makes good marketing sense for them not to reveal a new race at this time. Excitement is already very high simply for revealing the existence of the game. They're going to let blogs and game sites disseminate the information for now, and then later when the excitement begins to die they can release something as significant as a new race to circulate news about the game again.

I don't know that they'd advertise it immediately. They already knew everyone would be excited for it so why not show us things we'd be familiar with first so we're comfortable with the idea, and then hit us with a new race later to get us excited all over again.

Yeah, that's true, they did wait until the last minute to show off BLU and COR, afterall. It'll be interesting to see what they do release in the days to come.

When you already have an MMO and paying subscribers, you are going to wait till the last second to let everyone know you are bringing out a new MMO. You don't want potential new players to say..."Oh I'll just wait for the next MMO."

It's different with single player games. Hype them as long as you can. MMO's need to be revealed at the latest date from a marketing strategy.

SE's plan is to continue to support FFXI with new content for another year and after that all their focus will be the new MMO. How long the servers stay up in FFXI will depend I guess on players that stick around. With no new content, that might not last very long, but who knows.

Just checked the Gria race on wiki. The words "dragon like" interest me. If this is a playable race it will be a hard debate between my hume and this. I hope they add plenty of new races and new faces separated from hairstyles. The more customization there is means the more variety will be. We will no longer see clones of people walking around.

I hope there's new race(s), one of my qualms about XI was that there were only 5 playable races, which yes fits in with the story and the 5 tears of Altana, but Eorzea is going to be all new other than the Vana'diel clone races.

If there isn't any new ones I'll be rolling the FFXIV tarutaru equivalent male face 3B, if there is however I'm thinking of a change.
Ideally I'd like to see some Ivalice races since they've already got designs and everything done with them. Aegyl, Gria, Moogle or Bangaa I'd like the most, and seeing the Gria looking person in the art does get my hopes up for at least one new race.

And who wouldn't want to roll an awesome moogle.

Well we all pretty much know there will be Male Mithra by now, although that's not a huge spoiler, or technically a new race.

As far as a new race goes, correct me if I'm wrong but.. That small person with the horns on the official FFXIV website, looks a bit intriguing... Not sure what they'll call it, or if it will be playable but I'd sure say it's something to speculate on.

Another thing folks need to keep in mind is, Square Enix puts things like that there for a reason. They KNOW we will figure it out, and speculate on it, so it's basically them blatantly teasing us...

I'll predict two new races, for a total of seven.

If it has the freedom of jobs and crafts that XI does, where you only really need one character for the whole game, that'll probably be it.

Gria would be cool. Viera also, especially if they made Viera the female only race and added male Mithra for all the guys who wanted tails for the last 6 years lol.

Male Mithra and Gria may exist, but nothing too outlandish. Nothing stands out on the Logo that I haven't seen before. The logo for XI contained all the playable races, I don't think they would leave any out for XIV. If there are others, they would probably look a lot like one of the existing races as their horns/wings etc. can't really be seen in the picture. I hope I'm wrong.

* on closer inspection one of the guys at the back of the logo looks like he has horns, but these could also be Mithra ears *

So I am transfering my character thread post to this one and hopefully the moderators will close my old thread.
Having said that here is my opinions.
(I dont wanna play as a taru, galka, mithra, hume, elvin anymore)

RACES (This IMO should be a big deal): I think that them choosing the same races was kind of a bad idea. It accosiated the game to FFXI and this is not FFXI it is a new MMORPG so bring some new characters to the table. IMO I would like to see some races from Tactics and other games in this one. Here are some of my ideas.

Rhonzo: By far one of the coolest races to ever hit the FF universe IMO a Warrior race that looks neat and would fit in well in a MMORPG fun to look at and even funner to play as. (COULD REPLACE GALKA)

Viera: Seriously give that some thought rad looking better version of Mithra hands down the bunny from ****!

Mogs: These would make tarus wish they were never created if we could play as a mog welll....... ya get the point!

Humans: Obviously a staple for most RPG's and are in ever FF game.

Bangaa: These guys rock and would be a good replacment for the elves even though elves rock the whole idea was breaking free from the races of FFXI and I think they would be a great addition to the roster.

and whatever ever the **** VIVI from FF8 is.

Just to add, I noticed this too when the site was launched, but they quickly changed it to say "Teaser site Live June 2, 2009!", so I guess they were planning to launch it on the 6th? It does beg the question of whether more info is coming on the 6th, though I expect it was just a typo.

It is odd that they would have an announcement about a teaser site on said site lol. Yeah doesn't look like we will be getting much information on the 6th if any though.

I think it is great that they are bringing some of the old races back, but they should really try and add 2-3 more also I think.

I don't get how everyone has missed this! They've been advertising this new race blatantly on their site:

Right... HERE.

This proves two things. The new race looks like a lizard (Possibly outcast by the rest of the races?!?! No one is paying it any attention..!) AND you'll be able to grow/age in FFXIV as that is surely a small child trying to steal (THF class!) some materia. Now, there are young NPCs in FFXI, so it's possible that this is just an NPC. But I don't think Square Enix would blatantly advertise the newest race by showing it at an age/size that is unplayable. Let's be realistic.

The Gria are a small-bodied draconic race, complete with dragon wings, tail and horns. The Gria are more proficient in physical attacks rather than magick in combat. Their ability to fly seems to allow them to ignore the "jump" stat, giving them an advantage in areas with high terrain, and allowing them to easily get behind units, as they can simply fly over them rather than try to walk around them. And unlike units equipped with Faerie Shoes, which use teleportation to ignore the jump stat in a similar fashion, Gria are immune to falling damage; If they are knocked off a high cliff, the Gria will use their wings to slow the descent.

It is never made clear if the Gria are entirely female, or if they have male members, though the game hints at them being made up of females exclusively due to the lack of male Grias to appear. Note that the Gria are not to be mistaken with the Aegyl.
Not only do they match the description to a T, they can easily be the "counter-balance" for having a Male only race (Galka) and a Female only race (Gria, as compared to Mithra), thus allowing Mithra to be played as male, which is heavily hinted at with the male Mithra at table + boyish looking Mithra in trailer.

There's is also the possibility the horned child is a Summoner, as in the pic the character has no wings and summoner race has no wings. Either a Gria or Summoner, I am excited for any new races.

How about a half taru, half mithra and call it mitaru, or half orc, half galka and call it a orcka, or half taru, half galka, and call it carrot top. (='O.O'=)?

I'm hoping that is a Gria, and if it is, hope that they won't be female only. I might stick with my Taru if I play this, but more options are nice; especially since Gria are a melee-oriented race.

And if it is indeed a Gria, I think Viera would be another nice addition. With males, too.

Please, no more single gender races!

No Viera males, lmao.

HOWEVER, I would like to see some Gria from Tactics! (male and female)
Those horns are indeed peculiar.

I'm definitely interested in playing a smaller-bodied character for melee...
It's just so cute and ironic.

I do this now on my Tarutaru but it sucks to have the disadvantage, and I would like my character to perhaps be a little more proportionate.
