If ffxi and ffxiv have the same races, will the races have the same name/history/culture? How similar/different will the tarus of ffxi and the tarus of ffxiv be? They're still midget spell casters, are they not?

Quite confusing :x I guess we have to wait till TGS?

I imagine they will have different storylines. They will be the same "types" of races, but they might even have slightly different names? Who knows. But I doubt the stories will be exactly the same, because you cannot tie into the world of Eorzea with the world of Vana Diel, however I expect to see some similarities and some things that will make FFXI players grin a bit.

Like people have said, one of the beauties of FFXI games is the fact that they will reuse old designs in new games, with newer fresher stories and development.

The races won't be the same. As per the press conference today, they'll be similar enough so that current FFXI players will find something familiar in the new game, but you aren't likely to be rolling a new galka in FFXIV; at best, you'll be rolling a toon with a race that somewhat resembles a galka.

I think they said that the races are the same (so FFXI players will have something familiar to the setting).

On the other hand, those Galka didn't have tails.

Question: What are the ties to FFXI, if any? - Answer: The FFXIV world is completely different and even though the races look similar, they are completely different. They made them look similar so that players that enjoyed FFXI will be comfortable and can remake a similar character.

They are not the same races they just 'look' very similar so that FFXI players don't have to totally abandon the races they loved playing for years. I'm looking forwards to the new lore of the races as well. :D

Even though they aren't the 'same' races, they're similar enough that I know I won't be able to roll anyone but Elipsis and Yor there as their respective racial doubles. I've gotten too attached to their frames the past few years in FFXI, I don't think I could see me playing anything but with the options that will be available.
