I hope I'm not the only one, but I'm pretty sure Final Fantasy 11 had he WORST interface ever. The menus took forever to navigate and fighting through the actual menu was almost obsolete, which left you with some of the crappiest macros that were pretty awekward to navigate too. Not only that but the menus were ugly. As plain as possible, I thought the menus in any of the old final fantasies looked better.
It was also a common complaint in all the reviews for the game if I remember correctly.

What type of interface changes would you like to see?

Personally I would like some sort of macros like wow, easily accessible from the front of the screen... a drop down menu just gets too cluttered and too slow to navigate.

A programmable interface like wow would be nice too however, I see the ps3 as a limiation here. Its just like the whole arguement Square made against windowing for years it wouldn't be fair. (and I be damned if the PC didn't come with windowing out of the box this time...)

A more modular interface would be nice in general ability to move around your chat window and change its size too.

An easier to organize inventory! I don't know how many times I had to drop worthless items ect and scroll through the inventory, i felt it could be better organized. Actually I dislike WoW's inventory too mostly because of the use of 'bags', I want to see my entire invenory in one spot in an organized fashion and maybe some easy way to 'filter' out the clutter.

I would like a more drag and drop type interface too.

In general WoW has a great interface, and I maybe sounding like im just a fan of WoW but I played FF11 for 3 years, and have been playing wow for only a few months, and the inteface is on a cosmic level better. If the developers can come up with something better, great, but something far better than what FF11 is currently offering is badly needed. And maybe looking at WoW for inspiration would be a good idea.

Infact, I was really hoping for some actual screenshots of the game. The fact they didn't show any really makes me skeptical of its release date. However, I believe and tell me if I'm wrong but SE is usually pretty good about making its deadlines.

I would also like to note, I felt a discussion on the interface was really needed, since during the entire lifespan of ff11, I rarely saw the interface get any updates at all. Out of all the updates they did, they pretty much kept this the same, which worries me. The interface in FF11 is intimediating, and just bad. I don't care what you say, its bad. You can't justify it. If they want more players and not just a mass immigration of ff11 players, then a new interface is needed a modern one.

Anyways post any ideas you have! I kno theres alot of aspects of ff11's interface that SE needs to learn from that I didn't mention.

Personally, FFXI interface was one of the things I loved most. It was simple, unique and straight forward. I do agree that it could be prettied up a little bit, but I def DO NOT want a WoW interface or any of their recent clones.

What's your problem with the macros? You should have played the game with a **** keyboard, that way CTRL or ALT + a number and you have instant macros. Sorry to everyone who still has to scroll through in FFXI due to controllers.

This is your primary problem. Every other MMORPG ever made wasn't for a console. The other exception being eqoa. And that sucked *** compared to FFXI.

You need a clunkier interface for the people who play on consoles. Its like developing a real time strategy game for console controls...yes its going to suck for controls, but you'll get used to it and it can still be fun.

I hate sprawling my hands across a keyboard to maneuver and use my character efficiently. Its not fun. Its painfully stupid. More complex maneuvers does not equal fun. It equals earlier carpel tunnel syndrome. If you can make a more intuitive interface on a console, more power to you. If not, I'll take clunky and awkward at first over overly complex and a disadvantage to console players.

Better yet, have two different interfaces for the two different systems.
That would be epic.

assuming you weren't talking on the keyboard to someone constantly (xp groups anyone) Controller's are extremely easy to play with. And comfortable.

Control plus anything is automatically more annoying and slower. I should be able to just press 1. Bam. And the key of my liking. Why would you hold control down? It makes no sense. Its not hard to program, give me a few minutes and ill do it for them.
Fact is they were too lazy to change it from the controls the ps2 controller had which including holding a button (the ctrl) then choosing the macro, now you just get to be slightly lazier and use '1'. But its unnessary.

Besides its not about 'just getting by' they should have a better more fully customizeable interface. And there was NOTHING unique about ff11's interface, its the same interface any JRPG you pick up will have. Nearly completely text based, with drop down menus. your basic website has this.

Also I don't know anyone who actually fought using the battle menu, nearly EVERYONE had to use macros. It just so how useless the battle menu really is. Cluttered and uncustomizable, and not accessiable fast enough. Especially when it comes to things like stunning. So it either needs massive improvement and customization. Or removed, why leave it? which leaves with nothing but the macros left. Just like WoW.

Sorry, but the FFXI interface is something I've always liked, no Icon-based/Hot-buttons please SE!

Now where it really could be improved is in the group finding/general information area

I agree that the hot-buttons are overused and make every game look like WoW, but they also wont be too useful on a console.

A simple, traditional Final Fantasy drop down based HUD, where it takes no more than 2 or 3 selections to get to the spell or ability you want would be good. And also, macros.

The greater menu however, for non-combat selections, should be similar to FFXI, bust way more user friendly. I always noticed some things were put in illogical sections of the menu in XI.

I play on PC, but when I do play on 360 I love the controller. Scrolling is fun and adds activity to the gameplay. It has a memory too, so if you're melee and just need to use the same WS over and over again, it's already there ready to go as soon as you click. Nothin beats kickin back with a controller :D

Perhaps have it be something like this:
T1
T2
T3
White Enfeeb
Black Enfeeb
Healing
Curing

With each type of magic listed within the menu. So like blind would be under Black Enfeeb, where as Dia would be under White Enfeeb. Maybe a bit useless for in-combat selections, but would be nice when setting spells. Perhaps we should be able to assign a spell to a macro and select whether its on you or target etc. to make it easier to write macros (like selecting and it brings up options, or dragging it to the intended macro).. but then again I like it the way it is.

I played using a ps2 controller on PC. It just felt that much more intuitive.

I imagine the interface worked well on PS2. I don't know, I never tried it.

You can't really defend it on PC, though. The mouse was useless and you could only have one menu active at a time.

I suppose they won't do much better this time because it would be unfair... unless of course the PS3 version uses that fancy new motion controller as a pointer!

Ok, that probably won't happen. But it's not impossible.

Is there some rule that says you have to use a mouse? Man, I really loved navigating everything with my right hand on the number pad and left hand (finger) on escape/tab. Thumb controls camera and fingers do the walking. I'm not sure how that's less intuitive than a mouse. Personally, I find mice tiring; it's nice to have your hands right at the letters so you can type while running/fighting/doinganything quite easily.

I'm absolutely boggled that people PREFER the FFXI UI...

Have any of you ever even played WoW? I mean...they are basically the same thing...just WoW's is a whole lot easier to do and more aesthetically pleasing.

Even the macros are more intuitive.

Im baffled too myself lol. And also you dont play WoW using entirely the mouse, you could, but I use nothing but the numpad and some other things. In reality there should be two different interfaces one for the ps3 and one for Windows. There has to be hot keys, I dont care if its like WoW and i can click them with my mouse. but i hsould be able to assign any key on the keyboard to any move without holding CTRL. Also note WoW has TONS of customization with their interface...FF11 has none. So even if you disliked how WoW comes out of the box you can fix it to your liking, FF11 offers no such comfort.

FFXI's interface was amazing. I loved it. Way more than the standard "Bottom bar with spells" thing that most of the MMO's have now. The macro system was great, it just didn't have enough lines. It was easy to navigate with a controller or a keyboard.

FFXI - love it or hate it or bear with it. it is very clunky to get a hold of right outta the gate and some things remain clunky but i consider that a result of it being ported.

as for the next one... i fear more of the same since it seems as though it will be another PS# port to PC - which means: love it/hate it/bear with it.

The macro system was crap until they decided to update it.

The interface was crap until you decide to put everything into macros.

But of course, I played on PC, with no knowledge of PS2/X360. So I vote for separate interfaces.
