My take on FFXIVFollow

Firstly, I'd like to say hi, I'm thedropbear. I often read the alla forums when I used to play FFXI. I never got particularly far, I mostly played mages and once I unlocked subjob the idea of going through everything again just to be accepted to a party (and even then have to wait up to hours) got too daunting. I just couldn't find the time to play that much.

Yet something has made me return to FFXI another couple of times, even knowing this would happen.
In my opinion, this is because of a few things.

1. The immersion I've felt into the world is more than any other MMO Ive played since (FFXI was my first)'. I still remember starting as a WHM taru in Windy and not knowing what the **** I was doing, but working with other newbie players to sort things out (The number of new players has declined each time I've gone back, sadly)

2. The community is probably the best I've ver seen, people working together, not just racing to endgame so you can 'pwn'each other'.

3. Despite the dated graphics, the design still holds up, compared to the generic nature of some MMOs these days. Also, the music is excellent.

So now to FFXIV

If Square can update the game so that it is more casually accessible and have improved graphics etc. They have a winner. I'm 100% certain that the immersion will be there again this time through, and really, with increased graphical and processing capabilities, it might be even better. I imagine walking through a marketplace or into a tavern that feels like a living breathing world, kinda like the concept art on the official site. *Sigh* I can only imagine.

I'm also excited for everyone to start off on the same footing again. Maybe even play on the same server as people I meet on these forums. Imagine 1000s of people hanging out in a starting area, trying to piece together how to do everything, even the smallest challenges become large again when you're doing it through for the first time.

It's confirmed that this is happening. Read the interview with the dev team today at E3. I'm certain you'll like what you see :D Welcome back

I just hope they don't try to make it too casual. FFXI has a good niche. Leave the ultra casual for WoW and WoW clones and take the niche SE!!

I think the words were a bit more casual. It won't be super easy. Although I don't understand all this talk of how difficult it is to level up in FFXI in comparison to WoW.. I've hit level cap in both and I think WoW's grind was more tedious for sure. FFXI takes about 1-2months and it's actually fun since you party with people.

*edit: yes I realize people get to 80 in wow in about 1-2 weeks, but it's extremely boring.

I've already read everything possibly released. I meant more if they pull it off.

I also agree that it shouldn't be too easy, and should cater to the hardcore fanbase too, but SE should encourage interaction and cooperation between these bases, not a division.

I've left FFXI and returned so many times I've lost count and for the same reasons you've listed. I am near to bursting to have heard that 14 will be 'more' casual friendly and be pretty much FFXI revamped with all new lore.

The time needed to get full enjoyment of FFXI really killed the game for me many times but let's be clear I don't want WoW, that game while well done and has it's own merits it can get very boring. I can't ever say FFXI was boring, tedious but never boring. Make sense? :P That and Blizzard caves to a certain percentage of their players and it's pretty **** annoying. I like a dev that stands up to their own vision, within reason.

So really looking forwards to this game and while I'm looking forwards to a leveling progression that feel more natural, I don't want an I win button either!

It's all relative. In wow you get tons of quests that tell several stories as you go along. You can do this solo or in groups...it's your choice but for some reason most people do it solo (even those who don't want to...strange). You usually get enough money while questing to do a good deal of things including buying your mounts. Gear comes naturally through the quests and sometimes through random drops from mobs.

In FFXI there are very few quests compared to WoW but also a number of mission that do tell a pretty good storyline. You level by grinding in a party. You have to find ways to get money to buy all of the gear and spells you need as most of it doesn't come naturally.

Some people like the FFXI way but most like the WoW way. I personally liked both but I think it should be somewhere in between and hope it will be with FFXIV. It shouldn't be whisked through to get to endgame but it shouldn't take a year to do killing the same mobs over and over and over and over again. You should also be able to choose between solo and group content. Ultimately, leveling should be a journey you enjoy just as much as you enjoy endgame.
