FFXIV: Do you want mic support?Follow

Just wondering how FFXI users feel about this because it came up in a discussion between my friend and I.

Would you guys want in-game voice/mic support for FFXIV?

Personally, I do not. Something about communicating with other players with a mic seems to ruin the role-playing aspect of the game for me...

When I'm role-playing some Dark Knight Tarutaru(-esque) character, I don't want to sound like the 16-year-old white kid that I am!

It would also be really awkward to say a lot of things Square Enix comes up with aloud.

I know these aren't the reasons why the rest of you might be opposed to it. (awkward for people without mic, annoyed by other players talking, etc.)

BUT, voice/mic support is becoming pretty standard for online games, so I have a feeling it may be included in FFXIV; especially if there's a 360 release.

I know that when I played Phantasy Star Universe on the 360 everyone used a mic only to communicate and it was one of the most awkward things ever. Made me basically want to solo.

Nah, just give us a windowed mode and Vent.

Not like you can't get on the internet and log into vent on PS3... right?

I hope you can, I am about to sink some cash into one just to play this game lmao.

Yes, some option for voice chat is crucial. It's not the Ps2 era anymore. And it had better be GOOD voice chat. That doesn't ***** up the connection or lag out or affect frame rate.

Well, I hate talking over mic, it's just not for me but I do know some people like it. >.>

If this game is as cross-culture as FFXI though, it may cause divisions if people are using voice instead of auto-translate.

Could be an issue in multi-language parties if FFXIV goes that way, but it's undeniably useful for endgame and far more convenient than typing, especially with FFXI's limited number of characters per line (severely limited)

I don't know if you can use vent or similar stuff with a PS3, I suspect that would be an issue

I understand you somewhat. People say I have a nice voice but I always feel slightly awkward talking in vent and such. You can always do what I do though...just say your mic is broken but you can still hear what they say. That way you'll still hear any instruction given to you while keeping your squeaky voice a secret.

I do want mic support. I could see it getting kind of hectic if you're speaking to a party and a linkshell (or guild, or whatever FFXIV's equivalent of this will be) at the same time unless you could pick channels. I can see it having its uses in party situations. The option to have 1 on 1 voice chat would be swell too. Why not limit your speaking time to 10 seconds or so? If you have more to say, press the button again. If you're being annoying, someone can interrupt you. SE should also add the ability to mute people you don't want to listen to, seperate from blacklist, as well as changing their volume.
Of course, this really isn't necessary. If FFXIV is windowed (which it better be), there's vent, and I'm almost certain PS3 has voice chat. I'm not sure if it can be used while in a game currently though.

I am really crossed on this, on one hand it is such a useful tool for large scale encounters and party team work, on the other hand... it might form another discrimination bridge that FFXI just started getting over in talking to other players around the world. Might see people not willing to party with Japanese players or vice versa because they can't communicate through the online voice chat system. I say make it possible to setup vent servers on PS3/Live (it will come to 360 eventually) and obviously its easy enough to implement on PC with other aplications. Don't make it a standard component but rather possible with the right work around within the console/pc of choice.

Oh also... if they do decide not to follow what I say and implement voice within the game itself... at least keep it to party and alliance chat only >_> I don't want ACTUAL shout wars going on in places XD.

What if it ran through some voice modification to make you sound like a Taru-taru? :D

I don't particularly care about mic support in game, since I already use TeamSpeak anyway.
But I guess it could be a welcomed addition for many people! Assuming it is functional enough so I can choose to talk to just one person in particular (no matter where he/she is) or only join "rooms" like LS Room or Party Room and so on.

Then maybe I'd want to. lol

Who knows why. At the guy who suggested I have a squeaky voice... no, I'm pretty sure it's rather normal.

It just doesn't fit right when I'm playing a Final Fantasy game. Like my voice has no place there! lol... I can't describe it. Just very awkward and out of place for me, and I've tried using Vent as well. I understand that it can be useful in end-game situations, however.

id rather not have to listen to 14 year old halo fanboys screaming into the mic every single time they get hit.

ill just stick with TEAMSPEAK.

PC users should naturally have an advantage over other consoles just because we are PCs.

Would be really great if they make software support like skype or ventrilo for FFXIV integrated in the game, for PS3 as well, but i don't really want it as a default thing.

As an opt-in, available thing - absolutely. A few peeps on my shell use Skype a lot and we love it. If it's not there, we'll continue to do that.

PS3 really needs multi private mic chat support like Xbox live parties. We've been pushing at it for a while but its been hard to implement for PS3. They've added a ingame text chat but we're still waiting on that audio chat.

In game voice chat systems tend to be sub par. It is also useful for separating out experienced players by seeing who already has voip programs.

I don't mind ingame chat as long as there is some way to completely shut it off (like in valve games) and the capacity to mute players.

Hey look at me, I stuck my teabag into the headshot and made some hot coffee.

One of the things I quickly learned from dealing with xbox live is that there are a lot people out there I don't want to listen to. If they're going to include mic support then there has to be a way of muting it, either mute all, mute by char or maybe restrict it to friend list only.

What if they had a mic list? It'd just be a list of people who you've accepted for mic chat with you.

Also, hopefully someday the PS3 will add Skype or something. The PSP has it. Suprised it isn't on the PS3 yet, to be honest. It'd also help bridge the gap between PC and PS3 players.

One thing that would be bad about mics, besides the 12 year old shouting ****, is that you wont be able to relisten to the stuff 5min later. Like, with XI, if you're afk you can just scroll up in the chat to read something and respond (like a strategy or w/e)

Mic chat better be supported, but make it an optional thing. And make it specific to your group only.

That way, you don't hear everyone, just your group. And more than likely, if you don't want to group with someone because they are an asshat on the mic, you probably wouldn't want to group with them anyway.

and I only support this because I am on the PS3 :) If I had a PC, I'd say let the user come up with their own voice solution utilizing a 3rd party software such as Vent, TS, Skype, etc.

If you want it its not hard to set up skype, vent or mumble. I don't want to hear the VOIP of random pickup partys, but yes it makes stuff faster and easier than having to type out everything.

If you can type in a certain language, you can talk in a certain language. Most people use voice chat for group play, and most groups I found myself in in FFXI were English speaking (which was a shame, really). Voice chat is an MMO standard these days. LOTRO and WoW both have built in voice chat, but the problem is that the quality is very poor so most people wind up using Vent anyways. If FFXIV comes with integrated voice chat support, my hope is that it would be comparable to standalone voice chat options in terms of quality, otherwise I think it should be left out. It's irritating when you know the integrated voice chat is sub-par quality but you've got some dude in a group insisting that you use it anyways because he's too lazy to download/set up the vent client.

No, the ingame mic support put in by other games is never really used, as ventrilo and teamspeak are generally better then the in game option.

If they integrated one of the above maybe, but snowballs chance in **** that'll happen.

EDIT: Even a few ps2 and 360 players I knew had a laptop around while playing to talk on vent / browse alla for tips etc.

We use skype for Salvage. It's rather awkward being the only female in the group, and more awkward because I have noisy room mates and end up muting it on my end half the time and just listening to instructions.

I'd like support for it to be integrated for linkshells and parties only.
