Barrier Magic?Follow

I haven't seen any post related to this so lets speculate a bit more about the trailer. In the trailer there is a mage who has erected a magical barrier that is covering a small area probably big enough to surround half a dozen people. Also notice that this barrier looks thunder based and the mobs are sea creatures there for water based, from this I'd like to assume that mages will get elemental barrier spells. Notice that none of the mobs pass through the barrier so lets also assume that mobs that are not engaged will avoid these barriers, also the mage is stood with arms out stretched so lets also assume the mage can not move whilst the barrier is in place.

So using these assumptions how might we use an ability like this?
In the SE conference the theme of us fight multiple enemies at once came up so maybe we'll end up right in the thick of it with mobs all around us and using these barriers as a safe haven for down time or actually fight from behide these barriers.

Anyone else care to speculate how these barriers (if we get them) could be put to good use whilst fighting mobs.

Hmm I suppose if an escape spell is implemented, inside the barrier would be a great place to cast it! or some type of teleport period.

Also as a hate management tool for abilities or spells, such as Benediction or its equivalent. cast it and you run your happy A$$ right in there

According to the translated interview this will be included
The field that cast by blm ? we saw on the trailer, will be as a part of the battle system too.

I think this is going to be very interesting to see put into use, though just standing there keeping the field up could prove boring.

Interesting that so many people who see that and comment on it automatically assume it will be a mage spell. The seemingly defensive nature of it strikes me as more of a healer ability. (aka "I won't have to heal you if you stand inside my protective magic barrier! huzzah!') The concept is not entirely unique (even though the visuals appear to be). Other MMOs employ aura systems whereby you receive certain buffs simply by standing within a particular radius of the character using the aura. Another idea might be that it is a mage spell, but in addition to a measure of defense it also enhances the effectiveness of spells associated with the same element as the shell cast by others standing in the shell.

I was assuming it was some sort of Thundaga centered on the BLM, but I love the idea of being able to cast some sort of physical visable magic barrier as a white mage. More for the cool factor than anything.

As I posted in the main thread on =10

To be honest the first thing that occurred to me when I saw this was "Thundaga". If it is, I like the new way that it represented, as a true AOE with a clear border, rather than just "a single nuke that hits many mobs".

If you get wheat I mean..

It might suggest that the new game has a focus on more physical interactions with monsters. In FFXI, they could pretty much walk through anything but obstacles in the terrain to come kick your ***.

In another thread, some people were speculating (based on the logo and some hints in the IGN interview) that maybe characters in this game can form a barricade with their bodies to protect weaker players. I think that's an intriguing idea... maybe instead of a "hate" system like we have now, the new game is based on a more realistic system where your tank has to physically block monsters from getting at the backline players. The barrier spell might be something that enhances that, or maybe acts as a last resort when the frontline fighters fail.

Edit: which reminds me of another thing that might support the idea of realistic physical interaction: the Galka smacking the crap out of those jellyfish in the trailer. Look at the way they fly around -- in FFXI they would have shuddered slightly as the axe passed right through them.

I have no idea if there's any chance of this, but a Euphoria-style physics engine in an MMO would be amazing.

Probably a FFXIV equivalent of this or this.
