So I, and I imagine many others, have been pouring over this website after the E3 announcement of FFXIV in 2010. My pulse raised, i got giddy and excited... and I haven't played FFXI in almost 4 years. But did my heart ever leave FFXI.. no.. I admit I checked in almost regularly on the playonline site seeing what was new but my life pushed me out of the MMORPGs.. I'm sure a lot of us had our reasons for leaving, but are there those who feel the way I do about coming back?

In many ways I hope XIV feels very familiar to XI as far as controls, leveling and the job/subjob system. Would I like to see more jobs available at the get go.. sure. But it was fun, really fun, grinding away to earn the extra jobs and leveling your subs.. and your sub for your sub! People in here are complaining that they had to level 4 jobs just to play as bard... I'm sorry.. but if you only wanted to level one job of twenty then you seriously aren't taking advantage of the game SE has presented. Remember when you actually had to fight Shiva, Titan, etc.. in a high level party before the level 20 fix (and i use that term loosely)for summoner! So what can we expect? Who knows.. I know i'll be checking my email regularly from annoucements from SE.. and more regularly I'll sink my teeth into some threads here... Fortunately, SE has years of feedback on XI to make XIV something we can all enjoy.

I call it "old school" FFXI FTW!

I will admit after playing XI for 4 years there have been no other MMO's that have been able to hold my attention long enough. They really had something special in FFXI. I sincerely hope that they find that magic in FFXIV.

And while I don't really agree with playing for hours and hours a day just to get somewhere (well, not anymore!), I also hope they don't make it so easy that people lose interest after a couple of months. I'm a married woman, but occasionally I do have some free time! ^^;

After reading the Q&A I feel pretty confident that they are heading in a good direction, but only time will tell. I will still play it regardless.

I hope there is something similar to Scholar in the new MMO - before I left I was having some good old fashioned fun playing as a Scholar. Lots of abilities, lots of responsibilities, busy busy busy. I liked it. I will probably play a Mithra and a Hume, but always a mage class, unless they have a thief type job then I'll probably try that out as well. I'm also hoping that people will look different from each other with many viable options for equipment available. I'm a very visual person so it's important to me. A dye system would be just plain wicked. Also some sort of socketing system like materia to make things really unique.

I'm very excited for the new MMO, and with the slew of info we'll be getting in the upcoming months, I'm sure it will feel like Christmas!

I totally agree with you.. It will be magic.. just like our first log on. I'm married too, bought a house in my non-MMORPG interim.. so I understand that {longtime, yes, please} isn't always possible.. in that way I welcome a change into FFXIV.. but either way.. I can't wait! Let's choose the same server!! hehe

When I listen to the Sarutabaruta theme from the OST I get goosebumps. I'll never forget when I popped into Vana'diel with a big red question mark beside my name and no clue how to move (on PC)!

I just think it's cool that they are giving us an even shot at learning the game as opposed to NA release for XI which was like 2 years after Japan had been playing it.

We'll all be newbies together!

So many things I'd like to re-create the feeling of:

- Fearing the dunes, then getting there. Then getting there and thinking on how this is where all the cool people hang out.
- My first run to Jeuno, afraid for my life! Then getting there and thinking on how this is where all the cool people hang out.
- Figuring out the /sea and /follow commands
- Getting that **** chocobo access
- My first run to Sky, afraid for my life! Then getting there and thinking on how this is where all the cool people hang out.
- Finally getting 100+3 WW... wait no, I don't want to re-create most of that.
- Knabbing NMs
- Winning my first BCNM, and popping open that chest
- Unloading barrage into Kirin, prior to nerf
- Chatting with most of the people in the game. I found folks drawn to this game to be more friendly on the whole than others I've been a part of.

Well, I'm sure there's more ^^ Oh yeah, seeing Kanji spammed across my screen I always thought was kinda fun.

After reading Callipho's post I felt this the right place to put this. But I somehow hope you can link aggros and Cast <Warp> and have them link nearby people. Me and my brother always did that with bats to get rid of the RMT that were camping NM. Man that was fun.... of course I'm pretty sure they would not add that problem into a new game but would definitely still be amusing from that aspect. :-D I myself always found it fun trying to run from other's links even if I did die. There was just something about being a Taru-taru and running with another whole pack of Taru-tarus trying to get to the zone. Haha.

I haven't had FFXI installed in 3 years but I have the Windurst theme song music file on my desktop even now. :P I pop it up once in a while and it still has such a tranquil effect on me.

Well, most of them probably aren't on this site in the first place.

I fully expect the first few months of FF14 to be the best gaming experience I've ever had. I just hope that adventure feeling lasts for a long time.

I am still keeping my account hot, but not really playing anymore (i am at *cough*wow*cough* now). FFXIV means that i am probably never picking up FFXI again, despite how much i loved the game. But i loved the SE storytelling, the jobs... the races were really cool (despite the limited amount of facesets lol). The grind was awful... the enforced 6-man parties was trying...

Hearing how they are getting rid of that rigidity is music to my ears :D I really am looking forward to FFXIV.

Hmm that's a shame... as a fellow retiree I was looking forward to their responses.

I hope so too Seloan, I hope so too...

I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the game shapes up. I stopped playing FFXI 3 years ago after having played since NA PC release. This is a fantastic opportunity for SE and it's exciting to see how things are going to develop.

I'm certainly considering coming back when this is released. Granted I only played FFXI for a year, it still is one of my favorites for many reasons.

Well it's been a good 4+ years since I've bothered with anything FFXI related...Including this forum which I'm surprised I remembered my log in name and password. After now reading up on the latest updates on FFXI it seems they will be heading the right direction with FFXIV. I see a surge of retired people making a come back here.

I wouldn't say I'm excited. I'm interested. The trailer is indeed beautiful. And the tidbits we've gotten from the interview hold tantalizing merit. But until the beta has been out for a while and we've gotten to see just what gameplay is like, and whether they really have learned from the past, I reserve my judgement.

I have to agree with you on that. The first thing I thought after the new was "I can't go through the time sink this game requires again..."

I'm one. And I've seen quite a few others around here.

There's really nothing like being there at the start of a new great MMO. It's especially good that the Japanese apparently won't have a head start on us this time.

Left the game over a year ago after spending 3 years playing. I miss it more than anything. What I miss most is the community feel and making new friends. Main reason I left was I was too busy planning my wedding. Friends that left have been asking me start over from scratch and level together a few times a week just for memories sake. Final Fantasy 14 will be a day 1 buy for me. I can't wait to play and hopefully meet up with some old friends from 11. The next year is going to be along one.

When I first heard about FFXIV, I told my fellow FFXI retiree in my WoW guild about it, and he had pretty much the same reaction as I did: "Oh nooooo. There goes my life."

I can't stay away. I, and a large chunk of my old FFXI friends will be there for the launch. Here's hoping the emotional scars won't be so severe this time!

But that's why I'll be there. The hope of FFXI done right will suck me in. Please SE, make this happen!

I am looking forward to FF14. Had some great times in FF11 and have not found the same feeling in other games. I think the hellish grind brought people together more than one would think.

Spending 4+ hours with the same 5 people in a good group tends to spark conversation which leads to getting to know them. In other games I have played if people can solo they do and rarely speak to anyone not in their guild.

Plus if you were good at your job people would seek you out for a group, so player rep mattered. Anyway I will be following up on FF14 till it comes out and hope it brings all the good parts from FF11 with it.

I left FFXI a little more than a year ago. And I've missed it from time to time, but I've been playing LoTRO since. While I enjoy LoTRO, it's not an FF title. I'm excited to see what FFXIV is going to be like, I will play it along side LoTRO (lifetime account ftw).

I hope that some things are similiar to FFXI, but I hope there's more solo play and the UI is better and that there's enough info in the game that I can quest/craft without the use of a website.

Ha! I thought I was the only nerd ex-FFXI player who still listens to the soundtrack. It has a permanent home in my iPod. I get goosebumps listening to the San d'Oria song, because I remember the first time I played the game and ended up there, and the city seemed so big and confusing yet awesome, and no other first-city in another game has really given me that "home" feeling that San d'Oria gives me. I say I miss it, and I do, I miss the areas, and I miss the old times, but FFXI today has too many problems for me to go back. The in-game economy went to ****, you have to spend a week grinding the gil for a piece of equipment that won't matter in another level anyway, people using Level Sync to stay in the dunes until they can get as high as possible and end up learning nothing about their job at the current level, and Square Enix's attempts at getting rid of RMT (Goblin Bountyhunters) being annoying, ruining great spots (you can't enjoy a single beach!) and giving RMT something that continuously respawns so they can continue to level off of it. Also, after a while all the jobs began to feel the exact same. No matter what you were grinding to do your required role in the party. Everything was so set-in-stone. There was no fun like there was in the beginning of the game when everyone was still exploring the different ways of doing things.

I am no longer an FFXI-player, nor will I ever be again, but I have such high hope for FFXIV, and I must say I jizzed in my pants when I saw the trailer.

I'm definitely interested in FFXIV - I most certainly miss my days in FFXI! I would love to return right now but it's just too difficult and time consuming to start from scratch, especially considering that FFXIV has been announced.

This does present a bit of a problem, though, as Star Wars: The Old Republic looks fantastic as well.

I am super excited and can't wait. I quit FFXI 4 years ago and have been playing WoW on and off since. I like WoW but it never got me excited as I used to get on FFXI, I missed the **** out of the Storying with Mission and EPIC cutscenes. I never truly got to experience endgame on FFXI, which till this day BUGS me. I just didn't have the time needed anymore, something that WoW is good at. I do think that FFXIV is going to be very solo friendly. It seems like SE is taking what was wrong with FFXI making it better, but still keeping what was great about FFXI. I hope to god they do instanced Dugeons, but Mission style, they would be great. I can't wait.

I officially quit last year after i moved back to America but I had quit loooong before that. About 2 years before that while living in South Korea. After the move I could never play with my buds and it was stressful :/ And the Japanese were just as stuck up as ever (HATED BEING IN THEIR TIMEZONE) so i hardly ever got a party with them.

I mainly lost interest though after i figured out how much this game relied on partying. I started suffering in school because i would wait hours trying to get a mission done. Or I would get the party together only to lose to the boss and delevel. So after 5 hours i'd come out with penalties rather than rewards.

But i guess the thing that got to me most was that i felt inferior all the time. I guess that was my own fault though. I could never believe how some people would run around with millions lol. I could only ever scrap up 200k. Maybe i was lazy... I didn't have a craft but i tried to farm... In XIV it'll be different.

Former player of XI, and the news of XIV has brought me out of the woodwork. FFXI was the most enjoyable mmo i have played but like so may others here, I was too busy to dedicate the 4-8 hours in one sitting needed to do anything substantial (at level 75). Now i am married, have a house, a dog and hopefully a baby in the next year or 2. I might have time to re-install XI and start a new char and just have fun in the low levels.

2 years I've been away from FFXI. While I loved the game, after a while it took to much of a toll on my personal life, as I'm sure many others. Well 2 years later I'm a new man. As I've done much growing up I hope FFXIV does alot of growing up also.

I still want to be a Beastmaster when I grow up. I have dreams to this day of solo leveling my BST. **** I miss those days. Helping whoever asked or charming a link off a party. The little things. Fishing and Goldsmithing... Losing 4 hours of experience in 1 minute!

I'm in! I'll be lurking until more info is revealed.

Game launch is always a tricky time because of the notoriety of bugs that sneaked into live and so on. Still, I'm keeping my eye on this one. If I see a red mage-ish class that actually lives up to its potential and is capable of magic melee, they'll win me over. Then again, my friends are also waiting on The Old Republic, so that's also a factor.

I retired about two years and a half years ago, shortly before the birth of my daughter, so I could focus on family and home. I had sworn I wouldn't do group MMO activities if I couldn't be fairly sure I had the hours free to do them without frequent AFKs, and with a baby around, I figured RL would be calling me a Lot!

I've dabbled with WoW and LotRO occasionally in the past two years, but knew going in I wasn't likely to find the same draw I had to XI. I had assumed that eventually I would return to XI once I had my daughter old enough to have a reliable schedule that would permit some solid time for uninterrupted later evening gaming. But XIV is the perfect fit for me I think. An all new story, a new world to explore, a new system to master, and the chance to get in from the beginning have me chomping at the bit to get going. But it being a year or so away will keep me from getting into something before I'm ready to commit some time to it.

Started playing ff 11 with the naPS2 release and quit during the Summer of 2005. I was on the Lakshmi server and an Elvaan from San d' oria- still feel attached to that place. I mainly played as a paladin though I had leveled some other jobs. The thing I miss the most is my linkshell- I used to be the leader of an endgame linkshell but I miss my social linkshell the most :'( I've been praying for SE to release another MMO because when I quit I dropped all of the rare armor I had to make sure I couldn't come back. Similar to most of you guys/girls, I didn't have the time to continue playing because of school- I usually got home from school and played until around 2 a.m. At the moment, I don't mind if FF XIV does that to my life again... As long as the game is epic I can live with that lol.
What sucks is I don't remember my account info for zam! I was hoping to sign on and comment after seeing this immediately but ended up just creating another account.

p.s. anyone else from Lakshmi server?

Oh trust me, there are A LOT of players currently killing time in other MMO:s that have waited for Rapture/FF14 since it was announced 2005. Now their dreams have come true and you will be surprised of how many people that will pick up FF14 and start playing it.

I played XI like it was my job the Christmas after the NA PC release (2003) up until around the fall of 2006. I came back for a brief 4 month stint last year in 2008, but quit again for good. I left the game when I entered college because I realized that FFXI had really taken a toll on my grades in high school. I wasn't disciplined or responsible enough to keep my studies and FFXI time balanced. I managed this a lot better the four months I played last year, but I've since then transferred to a much more challenging college where playing XI would be totally implausible, unfortunately. :( I uninstalled the game so that if I were tempted to play the game again, I would be put off by the fact that it takes about 8 years to install and update nowadays (yes, I'm exaggerating).

I do miss the game a lot, and I watched the Sony E3 conference mainly hoping that they would announce the new SE MMO. I was ecstatic to find out that they were well along with it already and that it would be another FF title. I was jumping up and down when I saw the teaser. :D It's funny - since FFXIV was announced, old friends from XI have come crawling out of the woodwork and we've started talking to each other again.

I really hope that Square Enix, while catering to the more casual gamer, will still keep many of the challenging elements that we saw in FFXI. I know that leveling, HNM camping, triggers, and such were a HUGE time sink, but I also really loved the sense of accomplishment that came from beating a really challenging mission or quest. I was also a fan of the advanced job system. It might have been frustrating to some having to wait to unlock the job you truly wanted - however I felt like it made getting that job even more fulfilling. I remember how badly I wanted to unlock Summoner when I first started playing and saw people running around with their avatars, and then how happy and "high-level" I felt when I could finally run around with my own personal Carby at my side.

I just really loved how progressing through Final Fantasy XI was this huge journey you were engaged in with other people who were your level (sorry if this is cheesey haha). Sure, it was difficult, but having all these landmark things to accomplish at certain stages of the game were what made it exciting for me. I hope SE brings some of these elements back in FFXIV.

Of course I have faith that SE will weave a story and subsequent missions that will be just as spectacular as Final Fantasy XI. Rise of the Zilart and CoP had some of the best storylines out of any Final Fantasy game, I think.

I would love to see a seamless world in FFXIV, however. Vana'diel was a huge and beautiful virtual world to explore, the only problem I had were the zones, and having to communicate with everyone that you were about to zone. I would like to see how the different areas transition from one to the other. I feel like it would allow for more realistic game play.

There's loads I could say but I think I'll stop here before this turns into a book. :P

I played for about three years, quit for about two, and reactivated my guy for the first three months or so of this year. I deactivated because I was buying a new house and didn't have the time for games at all. Now that I'm finally settled, my computer has crapped out on me and I can't run XI well.

Then the news of XIV came out... so I doubt I'll be returning to XI at all now. I'm holding off on getting a new box until I find out more about the game requirements (and waiting for Windows 7).

In the few months I returned earlier this year, I was impressed with some of the changes that had been made to make the game a bit more casual-friendly. I'm expecting that this concept will make its way into XIV from the beginning (rather than patches, as in XI). So while I can no longer alot the kind of time to the game that I did in grad school, I'm expecting that XIV will be able to accommodate my playstyle.

Although I pretty much hung up my knuckles in early 2007, I very much miss many aspects of it. Someone had mentioned the soundtrack... Since I quit, I started teaching myself piano. I'm about 80% of the way through learning "Distant Worlds," and then I plan to learn "Jeweled Boughs." I'm very excited about Uematsu doing the soundtrack for XIV.

As a former long time FFXI player, I got fairly excited when XIV was announced, but I'm a bit leery of it too. I started XI November of '03, had a blast discovering the world, got BLM to 65 in about 4 or 5 months of playing, as well as WHM, RDM and SMN to 37. I then moved out of state, didn't play for about 3 months, and when I came back created a new Elvaan MNK.

Took MNK to 75, and made a lot of good friends, tried out some endgame in a small EGLS, but as I was basically just there to Chi Blast, and due to poor LS rules and point system, I got burned out and quit for about 8 months. Came back yet again due to a RL friend convincing me, and due to there being no reactivation available for my MNK, created a Galka NIN.

Took NIN to 75, and actually achieved much more than I ever did with my MNK. Found a EGLS that had just formed, and actually got to do all the main tanking in sky, so I stuck to him a bit more. Got all the sky gear I wanted, Beat Divine Might, got sea access and started fighting jailors, but after a time, the burnout set in again, and that's the last time I left, January of '08.

My main gripe with XI was primarily the amount of time required to do any Endgame activities. it would normally(at least in my LSs) take 1 hour from the meeting time just to get everyone together and settled before we could start and fight or dynamis. In the case of dynamis, another LS has most likely shown up by this time, and enters before us, meaning we all end up going to Dynamis-Bastok, which I hated. In the case of Sky runs, we'd ussually do 3 or 4 boss fights, and then have a 3-4 hour farm session immediately following. So a typical sky session lasted somewhere around 6 hours. WAY to much time to sit in one place.

I know that the time sink here is due in part to poor scheduling from the LS leadership, but in the case of Sky farming, many of the members couldn't be present for a separate run at another time during the week. Obviously Ground Kings were out of the question due to the attendance problems, even if they hadn't been botted by some other LS.

The deciding factor to me in playing XIV will ultimately come down to how much time do the endgame activities take. If they all take hoards of time like FFXI, I doubt I'll be able to play. I'm in hopes that they will remedy the time sink situation by at least altering the methods used to fight any EG bosses. I'm a big fan of instancing. ****, even quest completion to be able to force spawn would be better than farming pop items.

All my complaining aside, I DID love the job system in XI, and I certainly like how it did take longer than WoW to get endgame gear, but I'd like for there to be a point in between the two. The difficulty in XI is great, it's the time spent just getting together that stunk.

I'm certainly considering coming back when this is released. Granted I only played FFXI for a year, it still is one of my favorites for many reasons.

Wow. That's a name I haven't seen in a while :P (as a long-time forum lurker)

I also am an old FFXI player, hoping for the best for this game, and will be "coming back"; in the sense that I'm coming back to a SE MMO.

I used to play FFXI back around North American launch. I left for various reasons but like many there was always a pang of nostalgia for FFXI. Im really excited for this one. It feels a little like coming home again after years.

I'm definately gonna check it out. Server names supposedly being the same and all... I'm not sure if I'd pick Sylph again. I might shoot for the alla inhabited world this time around.

I'm also hoping they really meant the stuff about activities for all sorts of gamers. I don't have time to LFP any more, I think I'd end up divorced and single again if the time sink is like XI. I'm looking forward to this and will be playing for at least a year to see how it hashes out. IF I'm really lucky I can con the wife into playing, perfect excuse to buy a gaming laptop or PS3 for her ^.^

I'm definately coming to FFXIV from my FFXI retirement. I'll be under a different name. I'm planning on starting all over. It took me 4 years to get to 75 in FFXI but I was always having fun. Based on the changes they've made to FFXI in the past few months, I'm really excited to see what FFXIV has to offer. Oh, the memories of trying endlessly to defeat Maat as rdm, and eventually leveling BRD from scratch to pwn his face.

The names Mictam, in ~1year if you see me in game say Hi.

You know, I play a PC FPS instead of MMOs nowadays, and even in the community I'm current apart of, a good portion of the players are ex-FFXI players who are PUMPED for FF14. ^^
