Because some black people play this game too. It'd be nice to have a character to represent yourself that looks alittle closer to you. I had the hume with the tattoos on his head in 11.

I play Hume 4B: You know, the one with the baby face.

A black race would be great, but I've grown very secured to what I have now, so I don't plan on changing.

It is not unreasonable to want/ask/demand a greater variety of skin tone choices for your character from an American game developer.

Because this is SE we are talking about... you're leaving that decision in the hands of artists/game designers that apply their mind's-eye view of diversity in the world.

The point I am making is that eight years ago the designers of 11 had some level of awareness that people have a range of skin tones, going from albino to black. They chose to make character models span a very narrow spectrum of real-life skin tones. It would be foolhardy, yet a sad testimonial to SE's cultural proclivities, to expect anything more in this respect.

Eh, if we get to finally have a black representation of ourselves...
I do believe they should allow you to use a realistic shading guide.
That way it feels unique as you would rarely find someone the same race and shade as yourself. they should also do that for hair, and for the ladies who want highlights. xD
The Galka-like race would probably have something different... as well with the Mithra like race

For the Hume race (or equivalent) they really should have darker skin tones. Most major mmos have this option for one, for two like mentioned above there are black people in some FF titles already so it's not like SE isn't aware. And three as pointed out some people use video games to escape and like to create a character unlike them, that works for fair skinned people too. My husband is white as snow but almost always creates a version of himself with black skin. When I asked him why he said it's because he's supposed to be a hero and he views black people as being naturally athletic and strong. While factual or not I find that to be a charming view. :)

Point being all skin tones are beautiful give us the choice!

if they are going to add black people, then they should also add chinese like characters, indian, etc etc etc

they should just do a color skin customizacion.

Well yeah a wide color palette for skin is what I'm thinking they will have.

Yeah, I don't think there will be like a specific race of "black or asian" people or anything, but rather having a little more customization over your character, like over the skin tone and how the eyes look would be really welcomed.

The way I saw it was there weren't really any real world races.
Mithra were either tanned or furry that's for us to decide
Galka, some them are actually Blue!
Taru's always seemed half-cast to me.

Then there's Humes and Elves, I won't try to dodge the bullet on this one, they are White. There should at least be an option with Humes and Elves to pick skin colour. But like others mentioned, this includes the All the way from pasty to white, to black.

That said, A Pale white Taru wouldn't look right. So I'm gonna say stick with the more abstract colours for those other races

Yeah, I'd like to see more variety in skin color too . . . and more consistency. (I describe my taru in game as "nut brown" but she's peaches and cream in the character creation screen o_O)

A slider bar so we can get exactly the shade of Hume/Taru/Galka (now available in slate and dove gray!) would be most welcome.

I think at least the humans need to have darker skinned options.

As for the fantasy races that Square Enix has come up with, I think it will vary.
For example, it might be unreasonable for them to make black versions of the little dragon-like Gria race (should they make an appearance) or the furry, fox-like Mithra-like race, whatever that's going to be called, to have dark skin.
It might not coincide with Square Enix's ideas for what those races should look like/their origins.

However, most of what we have seen of the Viera, for example, is very dark-skinned, so that can be expected also.

Well, sadly to say, there is no humans in FFXIV.
So facial features staying the same, skin color is probably very limited.

The reason that all characters of a given race had the same skin color in FFXI is quite simple: Laziness.

If anyone here has tried their hand at .DAT modding or has any idea of how the current skinning system works, you would notice that each "section" of the body (head, torso, legs, hands, feet) are hobbled together to make your character. Each, say, elvaan male, shares the same file for a particular armor piece which results in just 1 file for 1 piece of armor for that 1 race/gender. Because so many pieces of armor (especially for female characters) shows skin, in order to make the skin match, there would have to be X amount of files for the X amount of skin colors. This not only means more work for developers, but also results in that many more files.

I'm a black male and I do play as the native american guy. However, for a short while, I used to play as the black female. Her name was Tinesha and I was talking all sassy like. People loved me!!! But then, I had to delete her cause my little bro needed the account for his character since we both play with the same account. :(

Still, I remember the fun I had with my crossbow wielding sista. Good times...

Be careful what you wish for. Knowing SE, if they do add black PCs you'll be choosing from Mr. T, giant afro man, Crip from Compton, or Mr. Popo.

I wouldn't exactly call them racially enlightened...

I always thought it was a cop out that they actually had so much in that opening cutscene that we would probably, and will probably, never see.

Dark skinned Elvaan's being one of them.

The level of detail given in the trailer for FFXIV seems nice but I doubt we'll be seeing that amount of baggage on our characters in real time considering SE's lack of consistency between CG scenes and the game itself. I really wouldn't be surprised if we don't get to fight in airships either.

In FFXI, character customization is mostly held back by PS2 limitations.
That should no longer be an issue with FFXIV. I fully expect them to have taken a look at other MMOs, and allow players to customize within some limits (fitting the world of Eorzea). Thinking of 'natural' skintones, body sizes, eye color and hair color but no Breast Size Slider (hehe), neon purple hair color or green skinned galkas called DaHulk.

IIRC, the dark skinned elvaan are Tavnazians. Since all the playable elvaan were San d'Orian, they were all pasty. I don't think this was really reflected in the actual models for Tavnazians in-game, though. Not the living ones, anyway...

I'll just point out that I agree with realistic skin tones. Not having darker skinned people is not really PC.

If you ask a Japanese person what their image of a "foreigner" is, they'll tell you a blonde, tall person with blue eyes. At least 80% of my friends here think that's "a foreigner." When I ask them about black, hispanic, or any other racial group other than Caucasians, they seem to come back to reality and say, "Oh yeah... there're those too."

though part of the problem could be due to the way foreigners are depicted in japanese mass media, epecialy in anime. I mean, even in shows where the characters have wild hair colours, a foreign character will more than likely be drawn with blonde hair.

The other reason is that (natural) blonde hair and blue eyes is not a trait that shows up very much (if at all) in people of asian descent. (and the tallness thing comes from the average hight in japan being shorter than some other countries.)

They kinda are though, at least, for Japanese.

In Japan, the typical Black Archetype is an empty chair that says "African Delegate." The population is like.0... something.

This is uncalled for. A lot of races have been taken and enslaved throughout the history of mankind and you know you are being ridiculous, and inappropriate.

I've only ever known four black people that played FFXI. One was my old roleplaying LS leader, and he was an Elvaan. Two were Mithras. Tummie plays a Tarutaru.

In my opinion, a more appropriate question would be, "If there is the option to change your skin tone in FFXIV, would you?"

I plan to play a Galka, or the closest thing to it if that's not what they actually call it. If there's an option to change its skin/fur color, I will probably lean towards looking like this.

Lol...this is one of the first things I thought about when me and friend were discussing things we hoped for slash expecting in XIV. Then I thought about how i'd have a hard time giving up my kool **** Elvaan.

My decision will be, if there are kool hair selections or were able to choose from many diff. hair styles, and all races can use all hair styles id choose a black hume. If no cool hair then i'll be an elvaan.

Lol though considering that the jp view of black gamers might still be somewhat black and white I doubt this'll happen...if im wrong ill be happy, but look at xi...i mean the black dude had **** on his face...why????? was he from some pig trading lip piercing tribe, lol and if so why not explained in the game? just a n?gg4 w/ **** on his face lol, im too harsh for the real world and what about that hair...braids wtf????????? wtf wtf wtf? anywayz....LOL

Whats this w/ ppl and the mentioning the lol black chars in previous ff's?
Let's see...

Final Fantasy 5 lol...

Final Fantasy 6 lol...

Final Fantasy 7 Barret...big muscalar, quick tempered black guy who smoke(blech)...w/e he was cool?

Final Fantasy 8 Kiros...I mean he was cool...but he was in the game b/c he wanted more excitement in life...w/e

Final Fantasy 9 lol...vivi...LoL

Final Fantasy 10 lol...did they think about making Lulu black?...lol

Final Fantasy 11(fav. game) lol...oh ya that one guy...the african w/ braids

Final Fantasy 12 is Fran an animal or a human? catwoman, idk havent finished this one yet, im actually at the part which involves Fran's Bg, if she's human please tell me...if shes not, which im sure she isnt...then she cant be black...which would leave us at LOL....

Final Fantasy 13 Sazh Katzroy "His pet, a baby chocobo lives in his afro." LOL

Final Fantasy 14 Let's hope...

OK OK OK in no way am I complaining nor will it stop me from thinking that the Final Fantasy series is one of the best game in the world...dont know any other better...other than my next fav. genre 2d fighers...moving on...

...im just saying that looking at SE's history and whats known about the way majority of blacks are viewed...it's highly unlikely that our wishes will be granted...agian I hope im wrong I do.

It must just be easier to draw white people. I mean, it's Asians who made FFXI, but none of the characters look Asian. Still... the white hume with the head tattoos... just darken him up. I'm not a game designer, but it doesn't seem too difficult.
