Voice acting for all NPC’s is something I would love to see this time around. I think reading text especially during cut scenes takes away from the cinematic impact. How likely do you guys think this is? I just think it would add depth to the game for all NPC’s to actually talk to me. Square Enix has stated that they wanted to make the best Final Fantasy game ever and to me full voice acting would be necessary to qualify.

I'd expect voice acting in Morrowind/WoW fashion, where NPCs have greetings and other spoken phrases, but their primary dialogue is still text-only. For missions and cutscenes, more voice acting can be included, but to have every line of dialogue spoken is asking for a bit much. Nevermind capacity issues, that's four languages they have to record.

And think about it...

I wish this would be one of the things that they adapt from WoW. But with the different languages, it likely won't happen.

Particularly voice-acting on the parts of bosses, or other important things you fight. It's fun having a boss yell at you angrily throughout a fight. It would be something that would add immersion to FFXIV in my opinion. And adds personality to the things you fight.

I swear, Keristrasza makes me cry everytime I fight her... Listening to her begging you to finish her off and kill her before she's murders one of you out of her control. Actually, her entire plotline makes me wanna cry when I think about it D:

I really enjoyed that in WoW as well =) thought it fleshed out a lot of the otherwise forgettable npcs. I agree though, I don't think *every* npc's dialog should be voice acted, especially if they are just townsfolk. A simple greeting of sorts at the beginning would suffice [use of their race or nation's native tongue would be fantastic too!]. Now for missions and bosses? I absolutely would love to hear full voice acting for that! Especially what Karelyn mentioned on how there'd be dialog during actual battles. I don't need to hear enemies repeating the names of magic spells ad nauseum, but the occasional threat or belittlement would go a long way, definitely.

I would love to hear something like Atma Weapon's speech before battle : "I am Atma, I am pure energy and as ancient as the cosmos. Feeble creatures, GO!"

On that note, I'd love for our characters to have voices as well =) now, that may be annoying too, and I definitely don't want to hear my whm repeating CURE! every 30 seconds or so, but just some random voice acting during battle would be great. Granted, there should be a filter so you won't be bombarded with every person's characters talking at once.

I can live with voice acting for cutscenes only, thanks. I really don't need to hear some NPC say the same thing every single time I click on them. That gets old really quickly. For reference, I'll point you to LOTRO, where in the Mines of Moria, every time I click on a dwarf I get to be yelled at about how they're going to RECLAIM THE MINES FROM DURIN'S BANE. Gah. Gandalf has already been there, done that. Get over yourselves, dorfs.

They certainly have the size for it.
Saying its not a true FF without voice acting is a little thoughtless though. This casts away the first 9 games in the series (their originals at least) which I'm sure everyone will find at least one of them that was a perfect game in their eyes.

Also, if they planned on the original FFXI, Bi-monthly mission updates, this means alot of organisation in recording 4 different languages for each mission. And personally I would prefer just no voice acting over the random "I'm out of mana!" when you run out. So for me, it's either all the way or not at all.

But there's no way of telling really. They could have any trick up their sleeve

I'm with you there. I think cutscenes (and maybe major non-cutscene events and fights) should be voice acted and everything else should just be text. Aside from voices just getting annoying after the 100th time talking to an NPC think of the effort it would take to voice act everything, IMO not worth it, spend the development time elsewhere.

Cutscene voice acting though, for sure I'd love to see that. It'd be quite swell. :)

I would love some voice acting, but I would VERY MUCH want to have the option for Japanese language over US ones. Voice acting is much more mainstream and popular in Japan allowing them the freedom of finding talented professionals more easily than the crapshoot in pretty much any other region.

After having to listen to Aerith on Kingdom Hearts, I wanted to throw my chair through the TV. (And Cid, actually. Yuffie was okay. Jack Sparrow was terrible, but he was trying to do an impression of Johnny Depp who was doing an impression of a pirate. Kind of tough to pull off.)

Universal voice acting would be next to impossible even at launch, never mind after 5 years of updates that have swelled the game's script tenfold. Voice acting on the missions of the central storyline seems like a possibility though (and later on the expansion packs), and I hope they do it. I think there was an answer in one of the interviews that made it sound like they were leaning that way.

OMG. I did...

Probably because in the pain, I've subconsciously purged it from my memory.

I'm for cutscenes only too. I played EverQuest II and the NPCs talking was really freaking annoying after a while.

So yea after thinking about it further I agree about NPC's that you have to talk to all the time not doing voice acting because you guys are rite that would get soo old. I want to revise my statemet and say I think it would be best if all Missions and boss battles were voice acted. And it would be great if some of the more involved quests were as well. But having my moogle talk to me every time I walked into my mog house would drive me insane. And I really hope our charecters dont talk in battle and say the same 5 phrases over and over aswell. I think I mostly want all my story parts to be like the later final fantasy one player games with voice acting.

Voices would be helpful in battle. Enemy lines were hard to catch with all the battle text.

"When asked whether the game will feature voice acting for NPCs, the developers simply gave a nod and a wink and asked that we all "wait and see." "

That is a quote from one of the interviews.

Makes it sound like voice acting is a go.

i'de like voice acting in cutscenes

honestly voice acting in every npc would get annoying after a short period of time

some battle phrases would be cool if they didnt happen toooo often and there was a wiiiiide variety of them

if it was in battle... there would need to be an option to turn it off... because lets face it... remember ffx? tidus said the same thing most of the time... there was a variety but it got old fast

Bioware is able to do it in the new Star Wars MMO. There are literally 100's of Thousands of spoken lines. I'd expect nothing less from FFXIV.

It will probably be similar to FFXII where only the important lines were voiced.

I can just imagine MMOs 10 years from now when macro text will be able to have voice too, causing my head to explode.

"Robber Crab INCOMING!!! BE READY TO FIGHT!"
"Robber Crab INCOMING!!! BE READY TO FIGHT!"
"Robber Crab INCOMING!!! BE READY TO FIGHT!"
"Robber Crab INCOMING!!! BE READY TO FIGHT!"

"Crap guys, sorry, my macros are messing up a little."

In 10 years I hope technology has advanced enough to where high quality audio can be streamed within the game itself so we don't have to deal with this issue. Then again...maybe in 10 years we'll get that and voice controlled characters... *sigh*

Pass on the voice acting, I don't need to hear "Dilly dally, shilly shally" or anything similar ever again. They don't need to make such ridiculous phrases if they're not trying to lip sync to a different language.

And pass on mic support. I can read and type, and I don't need to hear the whiny voices of kids on the other end, or the johnny come lately 20-somethings saying "@#%^" every third word.

I just want to hear the sound effects and the great music. Voice chat and voice acting just detract from the sounds that I actually want to hear.
