So what "classes" you guys are thinking of taking up?Follow

I couldn't think of a more appropriate title to come up with, but what type of class w/ weapon and/or magic would you want to take up this time around?

I'll probably take up either a ranged attacker or a support role this time around. As much as I would love to run around with a large sword and slashing uncontrollably, I get this deep feeling in my gut I'll be selling myself short like with in XI where melee jobs were a dime a dozen, and the more desirable jobs will get more attention when it comes to setting up parties and alliances (Tanks, support, healer).

If there is some sort of "balance" in terms of combat, a fast attacking dual-wielder job ala THF/NIN would be sweet.

I wouldn't mind taking up a tanking role if there was more DD aspects to it.

If ammo isn't expendable like before, then I'll probably be some form of archer or gunner.
Maybe start as that and change to a dagger user at some point, or depending on how tanking works a Paladinesque char.

its gonna be a mage job to start out, one can hope they have something similiar to a blue mage but if not..... maybe blm or whm type job. My only hope is if going with say whm type job that we can actually do a decent job at solo'n things so were not dependent on getting others to help if none of ur friends are online. They say they are designing this to be more solo friendly along with group play so time will tell what they are gonna do.

It depends how fun the jobs are. I'm a samurai at heart so even though no one liked samurai very much when they first came out in ffxi, I'll still be a samurai first. Then, I may become a ninja if they're still and not boring. After that, warrior so pretty much the same order I went through in FFXI but depending on how easy it is to reach the maximum level, I may consider something new like monk or another melee class. I may try a mage class if i don't need to keep an extreme amount of equipment to bounce back and fourth between since that can get annoying. But yeah, general order of things. Hopefully they start small on the classes and not bring like 20 jobs in because that can cause some issue. Start with 6 again, and do quests for more is much more fun.

I'm really interested to see how summons will be implemented in this game. Overall, I'd like to be a support caster. Buffing/healing allies, debuffing enemies, swaying the balance.

Eh... played a paladin in FF XI- with warrior, nin, etc. leveled but this time I'm going to go for "blm" first (or at least follow that "growth path"). The way Tanaka and SE keep commenting on the job system I think it will exist in one form or another so I feel comfortable referring to the jobs as are.
Also, I totally agree, the idea of "standard jobs" and "advanced jobs" should still be around.
If possible could someone summarize all the jobs that were added post 2005? I know blu, sch, and dnc were added. I know what the first two did but can't really tell what the role of the dnc was? Was it sort of like a samurai?

DRK. I love gigantic, unwieldy weapons, for I am soullessly vacuous if not for my compensatory phallic symbols.

If NIN is made into a proper DD class this time around, with a greater focus on its historical strengths, then there's a good possibility I'll level that, too.

I'd probably pick up a support/ jack-of-trades. Only problem is depending on how they do the flow of learning skills and suck it might be a hindrance in trying to pick up a wide range instead of focusing on a set path.

It's hard to say. I've changed roles in my MMO career. Started out FFXI as BRD and loved being pure support and magely endeavors on the side, but ended being a hardcore BRD/NIN tank until I quit (which happened literally weeks before Mazurka was nerfed). In WoW, departing from my taru-ness, I play(ed) a hulking prot only Tauren Warrior... I guess I evolved into a tank a bit...

I'll almost definitely be a Taru again, but I'll probably return to magely things until I can afford to gear a tank really well (because I can't handle being a half-*** tank). Before quitting FFXI I got really into THF and RDM. I also got my DRG to 50.... gathered all of my AF... and never got to put a single piece on.

So those three "unfinished business" types might end up near the top of my list as well as BRD... dunno. Aaaahh. The hardest part will be narrowing it down to one I want to focus on first.

If possible, I plan on developing a character to tank in group content with an eye to hybrid capabilities in solo content. I did the DD thing for pretty much my entire FFXI experience and the first half of my WoW experience before I took up tanking, and I love it. How that will fit in with FFXIV I don't know, but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled to find out ;D

Also thought about a gunner type job, this time around. Maybe?

I liked Ninja the most in FFXI, but I don't think they'll have blink tanking again. I always wanted to play Ranger and Summoner, but I never really got around to it in XI, before I quit. I think I'll try to take up Summoner as that will probably strike the best balance for me between being useful in the endgame and being fun to play in general.

Support!!! I'm a RDM, BRD, and COR and I just love the whole concept of helping others through subtle means. Instead of healing their HP constantly, I'd rather buff them up defensively to live longer. Instead of dealing insane amounts of damage against enemies, I'd rather increase other players' attack power while lowering the enemies' defenses to let others do all the violent stuff. I'd sooner sleep an enemy and run than stick and fight even with a decent chance of winning. In essence, I'm a team player and support just caters to my style beautifully. Not to mention RDMs and CORs had some of the most classy looking AFs!!

I'm really leaning toward WHM for starters, and I plan to take whatever I start out with seriously. However, I also want to nuke. I only took BLM up to 25 or so in XI, but it always seemed really fun to drop nukes. I'm not all that interested in melee DD this time around, although I would be interested in BST if it makes a reappearance.

It is funny I see some sky battles so I wonder jobs like Gunner or Cannoneer, mage jobs like Seer and necromancer, and maybe machinery jobs like Engineer (think Edgar from FFVI). I just feel these jobs could make sense.

If they offer something remotely resembling bst, that's likely where my heart will end up. The cynic in me though is screaming go healer. Go support. It's a sure fire way to reach endgame the fastest.

We'll have to see though. I can say that originally I was in a big hurry to get to endgame. I told myself it wasn't a race to 75, but honestly I didn't really believe it. I thought endgame was where "it" truly was, and I was sorely mistaken. Once I got there I realize the journey, for all it's ups and downs was what really mattered. It's the reason I'm looking forward to starting fresh, in a completely different game.

Whatever I pick, I intend to effing savor every minute of being a clueless newb this time around. Nothing has ever came close to matching my first few days running around Windy as a blm, doing quests/missions, joining maze parties, and talking about eventually getting to this mystical and magical place called the Doons--you know where the high lvl players went. I met two of the people who'd I'd call true friends in that time; the two people who have made continuing playing worth it after all these years. We'd explore the strange new world together, try to find ways to hit it rich (lol we're still trying I think), and basically just having tons of clueless, exciting, fun.

Regarding expendable ammo... that might be a deal breaker for me when it comes to a gunner kind of job, but I'm seriously leaning towards a ranged attacker for damage now.

If the currency is easier to obtain/ammo is cheaper then I'll definitely go that route. If not then support role will be my other option.

I almost forgot the solo options... I'm hoping that there will be better solo options for ranged and support roles

For my initial character class, it'll be a highly aggressive melee player for me. I'm not too particular if he's dual wielding katanas or carries a great sword the size of an airship, I just want to decimate stuff. Yar. To be very honest, I'd very much love to go for an attacking class-job that will end up being like one of the Judges from FFXII (a Garbranth dual wielding clone maybe). Now that would be something

Very possibly, my next "job class" (or "supplimenting subjob") as I progress or get to higher levels is where I will now start to fine tune and add finesse to my offensive style. Perhaps ranged weaponry, perhaps some sort of "flash-steps" (so I can teleport or "speed-slide" short distances to my target), perhaps some sort of offensive spells to support my physical attacks, perhaps an attack-oriented summon/esper; dunno, the possibilities are up for grabs until the game arrives.

So yeah, Warrior-ish/Dark Knight-ish class for me with a touch of Ninja-ish skills; and geared up in heavy armour. Intriguing thing is, I'm not trying to wear "dark-coloured" gear that is so stereotypical of DRKs; gimme some very shiny shiny stuff that I can wear so the mobs can see me very clearly on the battle field. I need them to know exactly when I'm coming for them.

The katana (read: GTK in FFXI), has always been my weapon of choice, so I'll be going after whatever uses it (really hoping NIN becomes a major DD in XIV, and that it can use katanas without any stupid "skill penalty"). Otherwise, Samurai.

I usually go with a Spear-wielding, melee balanced tank. Not necessarily a Dragoon, but... In any case, that's my reputation (also usually pick it because my girl always goes healer and loves White Mages) but I love to mix things up, especially if something sounds shiny. We'll see what's announced, I suppose.

DPS style paladin gswd main sword and shield secondary, with White Magic and heavy armor. Think DRK with a twist. tbh my 75 drk has about 4 or less vit than my pld at 75 and my pld 4 or less str than my drk.... If works how I want it to I can fill 3 rolls Backup tank/DD/Tank with some Curative powers in there. http://my.opera.com/dothack/albums/showpic.dml?album=26953&picture=281532 http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/dothack/images/e/e0/AzureBalmung.jpg

I'd love NIN as a DD if all thier damage wasn't in the form of consumable items. Dont get me wrong, they were usually fairly cheap on my server compared to my income but c'mon , no other "caster" had to use items to cast spells.

It would be hilarious if they did fix SMN, because it would make me so angry that they put all fixes in XIV and none in XI that I'd delete my XI account instantly and transfer to XIV and never look back.

But I think I'd go for the job that seemed to have the most fun actions to do, while still having them potent enough to be used. I.e. like SMN but not necessarily with pets.

'm a big fan of both pet classes and support classes. As you can see from my sig, my mains used to be SMN and BST. They say people always fit into one type of class, support/dps/mage etc and tend to always play those roles. So I guess I'll be sticking with something along those lines. I assume there will be some sort of summoner, there normally is :)

I generally gravitate to the ranged, tanking and multipurpose classes so I'll probably be following this trend. It will definitely depend on the way the jobs can be played though. I swore up and down that I would make RDM my first 75 job and it is still a work in progress several 75's later..

If they have a thief class for sure i will try that first. I don't mind pulling since thats all a thief usually did other than the occasional SA/TA/VB combo. Usually helped for treasure hunting or farming later game too.

Uhm other than that if they have a ranger job again but it is significantly cheaper to actually play i will do that. I loved the idea of ranger in FFXI but all i heard from people is that the job is sooo expensive to play it's just not worth it.

Edit
Oh or monk

Lastly i hope they have more than one job that has an aggro ability since it was ridiculous trying to do any other tanking job unless you had /war... boring boring boring.

That's actually probably one of their big plans. They'll continue to "support" FFXI, but all the real balances, fixes, and revamps for our favorite classes will be featured in FFXIV. They have stated that ultimately, they want the FFXI community to cross over to their new MMO. Can't really blame them; it's much easier to maintain a new game, than a new game and a 7+ year old one.
