The Five Stages of FFXIV MigrationFollow

I was reading a post in FFXI General about players losing motivation to do anything in XI, when a thought struck me. Looking back at some of the recent forum discussion, it suddenly occurred to me where I'd seen this pattern before:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kübler-Ross_model (a.k.a. The Five Stages of Grief)
  • Denial - "Squenix will never drop support for FFXI!"
  • Anger - "But what about my relic!? My Maat's Cap!? Six years of progress means nothing??!?"
  • Bargaining - "Can we at least transfer our characters?"
  • Depression - "I've quit all my endgame shells. I have no motivation to do anything."
  • Acceptance - "Well, maybe I'll give XIV a try..."

Here's hoping everyone finds their own path to stage 5 as painlessly as possible!!

Realisticaly? There will probably be support for FFXI for another 5-10 years at least.

Very few MMOs have had their servers turned off forever (usually ones taht were never profitable to begin with). Even Everquest, as dead as it is, still gets official support.

Though I do give it half a year before the servers get merged down to 1-3 servers total.

Agreed. But there is still a lot of naysaying and QQ-ing over on =10.

As for myself, I plan to try XIV for a couple months, and see what it has to offer before making a decision to continue with one game or the other -- or both. >.>;

FFXI's been pretty much dead to me for the past few months. I'm already at acceptance.

I'll give FFXIV a try. I don't know if it'll have the same sparkle and sense of wonder that FFXI did (my first online game), but I don't think I'd consider myself a true FF fan if I didn't at least give it a chance.

ever since I started working I only play for FFXI for 30 mins. I think I might start playing FFXII to finally finish it.

Meh, I doubt any MMO will ever achieve the wonder I had back when I picked up my first MMO, Ragnarok Online. I look back on that game, and am still impressed with the level of details in that game's sprites, and the generally homeliness of it.

Your first MMO will always hold a special place in your heart. Unless your first MMO was Runescape, then it holds a special place in your nightmares.

lol my first MMO was RO as well, but i never really "liked" it as much. it was more of a tinksink for me when i was bored. the first MMO that i couldn't keep my hands off was ff11. it had something special, something that everything else didn't have.

anyways i didn't go thru those stages at all.

mine was something like this

1) Excitment - "A NEW FF ONLINE YAY."
2) Anger - "My character aint getting ported over? There goes 4 years."
3) Acceptance - "Good bye FF11, hello FF14."

Most important thing to remember when playing an MMO:

There is no such thing as progress. There is only enjoyment of the game.

Even if you've played FFXI for 6 years and have a Maat's Cap and relic, you haven't made a single bit of progress. You've just played the game, and, hopefully, enjoyed it, just as much when you were level 5 with no sub as you do now.

Yeah there really is no progress like... building a house, finishing your yard, building a deck.

I agree pure enjoyment.

I think for many many people it will be 1-2 stages of

1) "omg a new FF game"
2) "this is pretty good, ffxi what, whats that?"

It will hold a place in peoples heart but for many the tedious time sink that it is, is just too much to overcome. I for one would go back in 5 seconds, but i cannot afford to play a minimum of 2 hours a night. I personally like playing for about an hour or so, just long enough to do something and logging off.

I don't think those steps work for all of us, because for a lot of us this isn't really good or bad news. Or maybe it is both good and bad news. The emotions are more complicated in that we are sad at the though of possibly leaving XI behind, but at the same time excited to start fresh in a new game. To make it more complicated is we are still at a stage where we don't know for sure if we are going to be leaving at all, depending on what XIV is like and how good it is.

If FFXIV came out tomorrow, I would be playing it in a heart beat. My highest job in XI is 62. I don't have the time to do endgame, I just play for enjoyment. FFXI is hardcore so giving it up wouldn't be that painful for me.

I've all but officialy stopped playing XI now. A few months back I had a surge of commitments take increasing chunks of my time and while I can still log on every now and then for the odd hour, when I do I accomplish next to nothing and quickly become frustrated.

If XIV sports some of the things that make XI great (solid PvE focus, depth of storyline, cutscenes etc) together with the ability to make meaningful progress at a casual basis-- sign me up!

For me, it will be the XI I never truely got to enjoy.

I'm not sure where the deep desire to play Final Fantasy comes from. I was raised playing Square games -- I started playing FF6 when I was like 8 (I'm 21 now). I've gotten every FF as it came out, and beaten every good one except for 12 (I just started college right when it came out). I played FF11 for a year, and then switched to WoW for about 4 years. WoW doesn't compare to FF11 for me. I'm coming back to FF11 in a month or so, just for kicks -- it's $20 for all 4 boxes and 1 month, how can I lose? I plan to switch to FFXIV asap because, let's face it, it'll be the best MMO when it comes out. WoW doesn't do it for a lot of people anymore, and don't even get me started on the mess that is The Old Republic (KOTOR III would've been a much better decision by BioWare).

I guess I went straight to acceptance, simply because FFXIV won't really have a fresh contender in terms of the kind of community I want. WoW has a lot of immature people (I'm not saying anything specific, I'm just saying that I've ran into my fair share of poor-quality players). Star Wars games have a culture all their own that I don't want to get into. I've already accepted that FFXIV will be the only way to go for me, unless it completely bombs *heavily knocks on wood so that doesn't happen*.

WHAT? WHY ARE YOU POSTING THIS? SE WILL NEVER DROP SUPPORT FOR FFXI.
YOU LIAR I HATE YOU.
I'LL GIVE YOU $10000000 TO MAKE THIS NOT HAPPEN!
Money won't matter anymore after the game goes...you might as well take it all ; ;
Unless I spend it on FF14...hmmmm

I'm also at the stage where I am pretty much done with FFXI. I just want to have fun with my friends and not take anything to serious anymore. Between the announcement of FFXIV and playing the beta for Aion there is just no motivation for me to do anything in FFXI.

ROFL! Love it...

But really, the worst that is going to happen is they will merge a couple servers. The game has a good 5 years left, probably more. Let's be honest here, people don't put 6+ years into a game that isn't good and a lot of fun to play. Regardless of how XIV turns out, XI will still always have life.

Leaving XI for good will be very difficult for me. I started playing MMO's with Ragnarok Online, then move onto FFXI when it got released in NA. It's been my home since.

I still play and love FFXI so it's gonna be hard to say goodbye. I'll keep my XI account, even after XIV comes, just in case I get the urge to play it again :p

I am glad I didnt purchase any of those new releases for ffxi, I have quit playing it except for gardening every day to keep my income flowing. Now I have more money than I need and nothing to spend it on. Unfortunately as a casual gamer I can't keep up with this game or my endgame linkshell, and I've accomplished all the goals I have set for myself. So long FFXI, you will be remembered..... until I forget cause I am playing a cooler game!

The feeling I got from FFXIV's announcement was an exaggerated version of what I felt when I read Scott Ramsoomair's comic about implementing Level Sync. I had quit FFXI for the 3rd time at that point, and was missing it dearly. I went back, was more productive than before, and accomplished a few of my goals. FFXI popped my MMO cherry and for the type of sentimental and plot-driven gamer that I am, it was a virtually irreplaceable experience. But after about 4 hiatuses over the course of the past 7 years, and restarting on various servers, I've finally admitted that I'll never have time for its endgame content and still be a functional, on-track college student who occasionally likes to do things that don't necessarily involve FFXI.

I admit, FFXI made me a snob. I like MMOs to wax hardcore, and I think FFXIV will still have that to a lesser degree, but if there's one thing it NEEDS to have, it's the FFXI community. We @#%^ing rock. I almost want FFXI to be a prerequisite for purchasing FFXIV (no, not realistically). As long as FFXIV has this, I won't miss FFXI nearly so much.

The real test will be when FFXIV's been out for a good bit, gotten out of beta, and then we look back at FFXI. I for one doubt that any of us won't get teary-eyed and sniffle, XIV success or no.

I rage quit FFXI way back around na release when I de-leveled from 30 to 29. All the weeks of painstaking grinding started to get on my nerves and when I de-leveled back down to 29 after FINALLY reaching 30 and unlocking some sub jobs I snapped. I was so frustrated I almost cried the thought of going back to wherever it was I was leveling (yuhtonga? Kazhim? I dont remember) drove me screaming from xi. I'm really glad to hear this will be omre casual friendly and have the ability to solo (even tho I hate soloing I do usually play in small parties with my gf and any friends logged in)

Same here, since i dont do end game stuff, i dont have awesome equipment, and since i dont think i ever going to see the end of some of the expansions, then i can say for sure that im going to go play FFXIV (better graphics? better interface? better character customization? im there... )

All i have been doing in FFXI is leveling jobs, and trying to do some missions and quests (when people helps thats it), so yea, FFXI's been quite dead for me anyway, all my friends are gone so im not going to miss anyone or be missed by anyone...

Then with people changing of games, they realize all their efforts on such items has nothing special, they're just items, it is just a game, you had fun getting the item, when it's done is done.

I have myself many endgame stuff, but not as great as a Relic or maat, but even if i wasted even more time of my life getting those two, i wouldn't ***** about if FFXI comes to an end, FFXIV is a new game, no one has right to have advante over someone else at the start, even if you had a ******* relic or maat's cap.

But getting to the point, FFXI will last more years, probably with less people, and less hardcore, but it will be there.

people like me are focused on losing out on ffxi and going to 14, then 13 comes out and I am going to play that until 14 comes out, buy 14 and probably never beat 13, or at very least play 13 during 14 server maintenance and completely forgetting about ffxi ;(
