PS3 Noob WarningFollow

This post is a mere warning (not fear mongering) to those who haven't yet purchased a PS3, but plan to, upon news of discovering the release of FFXIV. So, please, be smart and purchase an extended warranty program along with your initial investment. It's totally worth the extra fifty bucks, or so. Look for a two year coverage, or more, if you can find one. I learned the hard way with my PS3 60 GB, when it took a nosedive into the toilette about a year after buying it.
I can't blame anyone but myself for my first PS3's bluray lens burning out. Old habits die hard from FFXI. I was grinding from level 1-20, on Fallout 3 in one session. After hours and hours of continuous play, my PS3 began to freeze more and more often. It got so bad that it actually fried the laser inside of it. Having learned a solid lesson, I purchased a new 80 GB PS3, and got the two year plan for the PS3. Also, I promised myself I wouldn't let my PS3 stay on for more than four hours in one session.
That means, no more "overnight bazaare" for me, or for anyone who doesn't want to shell out additional hundreds of dollars for a new system. No more level 1-75 power leveling grind sessions in FFXIV.
Please take this warning to heart, and I hope to see you all in FFXIV. My PSN and XBOX Live names are both TheJollyJokers. Feel free to add me as your buddy ^_^

Yup also keep your PS3 well ventilated. And clean the vent grids every once in a while.

I have left my 60 gig on for days and nothing bad has happened to it yet.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. All of my gaming systems have close to 360 degrees of air ventilation, btw. That's sound advice.

Just so you know FFXI wasn't read off the disc, it used the HDD. FFXIV will be the same way, so don't worry about it.

That's good to know, but I'd still recommend getting the best coverage for your investment. Please get that warranty, for your own peace of mind.

Out of curiousity, why didn't you just spend the 150 bucks on a repair at Sony insyead of 300 bucks for a new system?

60G > 80G PS3, it's ~97% backwards compatible on PS2 games.

I have had my 60G PS3 since launch and played the **** out of it. If it ever broke, I would just send it in for repair and foot the 150 bucks instead of buy a new one.

I would like to add to this: It is most likely you had a model of PS3 which was using the KEM 400AAA blueray track and lazer, which this has been a somewhat known issue. Newer PS3's use the KEM 410AAA which has not been reported to have as many issues with burning out.

Also, if you have an older model PS3 (such as myself) and are out of warrenty, and you are willing to try this, you can replace your KEM 400AAA with a replacement for much cheaper then a new PS3 (and much cheaper then Sony will charge you to do this for you). Notes on this are, you can not replace a KEM 400AAA with a KEM 410AAA. There are many walkthroughs online to help guide you through this if it is something you are willing to attempt.

Yeh, I did send in my 60 GB, but I couldn't live a month without my games. Now I have two systems, one for backup, one for playing. Truth be told, the XBOX 360 has much better games than PS3, to date. FFXIV gives me reason to cheer for Sony again. You're right about sending it in and/or replacing the lens yourself, but I wouldn't feel comfortable opening it up. Is it hard to replace the lens yourself?

Matter of opinion.

And last I checked the PS3 exclusives were scoring better than 360 exclusives...if you enjoy that number kind of thing.

edit: I purchased an extended warranty w/ my PS3 b/c I do it w/ all my systems but at the same time, it's the most reliable system this generation next to the Wii.

That depends on how comfortable you are with that type of work. For myself it was a breeze, but I would highly (and I can't stress that enough) recommend researching what you would need to do, watch a few video's of other people going through the procedure, and decide for yourself if you can do it.

Just as a note, I've had my PS3 since 2 weeks after launch, and I leave it on (not in standby, but actually on) around 99% of the time. The only time I turn it off is when I vacuum out the vents, I have had no problems with my system.

TheJollyjokers wrote:

100% opinion.

Personally, I'd argue quite the contrary. I'm actually running out of reasons to keep my 360... I'm not big on shooters, so outside of Fable 2, Tales of Vesperia, and Lost Odyssey, nothing has been looking all that amazing...

Also, you make a thread warning people that the PS3 may fail, and then you promote the XBox 360...? O.o

The reason I bought xbox 360 bought DLC exclusivity for both Fallout 3 i.e. Broken Steel/The Pitt/Operation Anchorage, and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and the Damned. It really depends on the kind of games you like. I own Fable 2 and Lost Odyssey as well. Until SE announced PS3 exclusivity for FFXIV, I have been rather disappointed with Sony PS3 titles. Now things seem to be balancing out, so I do not favor one system over the other. However, I own more games for the 360, yet, I believe the PS3 is the more powerful system to purchase. I just felt a little burned by the whole DLC thing for two of my favorite titles. I am not promoting the XBOX 360, either. I had RRoD two months after purchasing it, lol. Now I have an XBOX 360 Elite, and I was damned sure to get a 3 year warranty for it. So far so good.

XBOX 360 games owned:
Lost Odyssey
Fable 2
Fallout 3
Halo 3
The Orange Box
Left 4 Dead
Soul Calibur 4
Ninja Gaiden 2
Grand Theft Auto 4

PS3 games owned
Little Big Plantet
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Tekken 5 online
(soon)
FFXIII
FFXIV Online
Dante's Inferno
(Maybe)
Infamous

FYI, all the DLC for Fallout 3 is coming to PS3, also if you don't own it yet (me) then you can get the GOTY edition that has the game + all 5 DLC packs. MS is basically trying to buy timed exclusivity on everything this gen, don't act so quickly ;)

edit: Why don't you own Uncharted or Valkyria Chronicles? Shame.

I boycott all games without trophy support, so that's why I don't own Valkyria Chronicles. Uncharted is a good title, just not my thing. Hollywood Video has only one copy of Infamous to rent, so I don't want to jump into that one yet, either. That's great that PS3 will eventually get the DLC for Fallout 3, but I am one of those people who couldn't wait to level to 30. Plus, I looooove Left 4 Dead.

That's it? You're missing out on a lot >.<

Uncharted, Motorstorm 2, Heavenly Sword, Cross Edge, Folklore, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance, Resistance 2, inFamous

Not to mention you're not excited for a lot of the upcoming stuff... Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, White Knight Chronicles, Last Guardian, Ratchet & Clank 2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2.

You're not giving PS3 a lot of credit here <.<

PS3 exclusives are badass, Valkyria Chronicles is a good example, and well, the console doesn't break that much, i'd say it's around 1 % not even close to the 50 % (but 1 % is still tons of people) or so 360 had a while ago (now it doesn't break THAT much), don't worry, just get air compressed bottles to clean it well.

As for Valkyria Chronicles, it is a hardcore game, it needs time to play it (Tactical RPG), but it is wonderful.

I have a habit of leaving my 80 gig PS3 on a lot and I have had no issues yet (about 16 months now).

I just keep the vents clean and there is lots of space around it for heat to escape. I don't think this will have any issues running an MMO, even if you play it hardcore.

Uncharted
Valkyria Chronicles
Heavenly Sword
The Darkness
Lair (boooooo)
Grand Theft Auto 4 (sold to get xbox version for LATD)
Fallout 3 (Sold to get DLC for Xbox 360)
Killzone 2
Resistance: Fall of Man
I'll check out the other titles you mentioned. Thanks.

Look peoples, I own both systems lol. I can buy games for both systems.
I'm choosing to buy FFXIII and Dante's Inferno for the PS3 over the XBOX 360, if that says something.

I think you just struck a nerve with PS3 fans, lol.

With the topic somewhat implying that the PS3 may break down, combined with this little quote:

You're right. No need to defend the PS3. It's a great system, and far more reliable than the XBOX 360. I want more games for the PS3 to come out so I can build my library, but Sony is a year and a half behind, aaaaand they need to provide us with some more juicy DLCs is all I was suggesting.

I leave my PS3 on for weeks at a time, not just mine but my brother's as well, it's either paused in the middle of a game, or just at the main screen, or Folding at home is playing. lol PS3 is a tank and it's very very quiet as well, if you do find any over heating you can buy an attachment for cooling.

Yeh, I only had to buy one PS2. I played FFXI for three years (before I quit) and the PS2 stayed on the whole time for overnight bazaaring, and massive level grinds. I'm a little worried I won't be able to do that with my PS3, though. Since I learned through this post that the game won't read from the disc, some of my fears have been laid to rest. I guess I just got an unlucky PS3 60 GB the first go around, but as I said, I deserved it with my 8 hour gaming sessions.

I just recieved my 80 gig MGS4 PS3. It gives off an extremely low amount of heat compared to my 360 with hacked 12v fans running. The PS3 is super quiet. I fixed my xbox 360 myself from the RROD for a measly $16.00 and 6 hours of work spread out over 3 nights (2 hours each night). That's why the 360 fans are hacked. My PS2 works till this day and it was bought on the 2nd day of US release. When playing FFXI I would bazaar when AFK. It had to have close to 3.5 years of constant run time. The 360 damage was caused by FFXI for sure due to bazaaring when I upgraded from PS2 to 360.

Now I can finally finish FFXII once my memory card adapter comes.

Ya, there's no way I'd play FFXIV on XBOX 360 LoL. Talk about a guaranteed break down. If there were a choice, I'd go PS3 anyway, as it's far more reliable technology. My first XBOX 360 (that I gave away) didn't work quite right after FFXI. It would scratch the FFXI disc only, but it still played. No other game had this problem. My new XBOX 360 Elite is never on for more than four hours at a time. Truthfully, I still don't trust my XBOX 360 Elite, even though it's run flawlessly so far. Well, I still get the occassional game freeze, but that has happened on both my PS3's as well. Sucks. Never had that problem on my PS2, which stayed on for 3 years straight too, lol.

A lot of ppl seem to be mistaken the difference between ps3 then and now. I have both original and newer version and i will tell you off the back the newer version have been modified for more cooling with less clutter inside then the original version. The original does over heat a lot on the side and can actually scorch your finger if you touch it when it over heating.

As for the newer version they seem to run much cooler if you buy the intercooler ts it will run even cooooooooler, seriously you just have to make sure you clean the fans with a air can.

I have a launch PS3, and while it can get pretty hot it has never overheated. If your finger gets scorched by putting it near the PS3 then something is wrong, it should never get uncomfortably hot, even if you place your finger right up against it.

But yes, the newer models do run noticeably cooler.

gaiaxzero wrote:

The Intercoolers are useless pieces of equipment, some of them even hurt the system more than they help. The fan built into the PS3 is very strong and more than enough to keep the system cooled.

If a PS3 is overheating (regardless of model), then it's defective and you need to get it repaired.

Also yes, investing in a can of air is a very good idea, it's also a good idea to take one of those little hand-vacs and vacuum out the vents every so often. PS3 is a very stable system. Like a computer, you can easily leave it on almost perpetually and you'll be fine, as long as you know basic computer care.

- Keep it in a ventilated area
- Dust it/Use Can-of-air on the vents
- Try to not let the room it's it get overly hot

just like what eveyone else has said take care of your system.
playing the console too many long hours not allowing it too cool down usualy doesnt end with a good result.

keep it clean...dusty areas make it harder for heat to escape.
everyone once in a while a system will get a bad person....

actually i purchase a intercooler ts and it does work well, it work with heat sensor and it use it own power source and it does a good job expending the heat away from the ps3 also on that note when you turn off the ps3 it continues to air out the ps3 to further cool down the system.

The first one was crappy the new version is actually much better but again you need to clean out the fans as you would any other hardware.

Well, I don't know about the intercooler. My friend who owns one, says that it runs too loud. I don't know whether I should trust the reviews on Amazon.com, or not, but if they are anything to go by, is that I shouldn't purchase one. Is there a particular model of intercooler that blows the rest out of them out of the water?
I practice good system care procedure now that my first PS3 60 GB went Kaboom. If this post saves at least one person from experiencing the nightmare I went through, then it's served its purpose.
Also, will any can-of-air do, or is there a special kind to get for PS3? Any help is appreciated.

any air can will do, pretty much just air out the front, side and back grill and always wipe it down, plus if you do use a ps3 never play disc with the ps3 in the vertical position, in fact any console for that matter. disc tend to wobble a bit more in the vertical position then the horizontal position.

I already learned this lesson the hard way ;; >_<
As I was playing Fallout 3 on the XBOX 360, which was standing upright/vertically, I accidentally pulled the controller wire, causing the console to move ever so slightly. Well, you can guess what happened...there was a horrible choking noise inside the XBOX 360. When I took the disc out, there were two perfect circle scratches on the disc, rendering it unreadable. Fortunately, however, I always purchase the $3.00 Game Guard at Game Crazy. Took the game back and walked out with a brand new copy of Fallout 3. After that incident, I began playing my PS3 and XBOX Elite in the horizontal position. Lesson well learned.

A similar thing happened to my PS3, only it wasn't my fault. The PS3 was in vertical position. My friend's son was playing Grand Theft Auto IV with a wired Logitech headset. Across the room, my friend's cell phone rings. She springs up, rushing to her phone. Not noticing the wire, she trips on it, slamming my PS3 onto the ground. My jaw just dropped to the floor with it. The game continued to run. I carefully picked the console off the floor. I took the disc out to examine it...not a single scratch, and no permanent damage to my PS3. Thank God Almighty!!! Sony must but buffer support inside of there, and it actually runs better than before lol. So, um, yeah...please, play your console horizontally.

Taking good care of your console is a given... just like any other electronic device you'd hate to lose. But I wouldn't be overly concerned about the PS3 as a "Fragile" system. I have a 60gb PS3 from less than 2 weeks after launch, and it's performed wonderfully, and error free for over 2 1/2 years now. Not only does it get used for games daily, it also serves as the BluRay player for my entertainment system (and with Netflix, my wife and I watch typically 3-4 BluRay movies a week), an MP3 player (with snazzy visuals to light up the living room while I'm listening), a web interface for our tv when we want to share funny Youtube videos with each other or watching a show together on Hulu, and sporadically spends it's "Downtime" Folding@home. It also was my primary system I used for XI for the last 6-7 months I played before I retired. Heck, even when I'm away on trips it gets turned on and off all the time by me through the remote play function on the PSP.

Feeling comfortable with a purchase is important when spending hundreds of dollars on anything, and if an extended warranty gives you peace of mind with your purchase, then you absolutely should do it. However, it should also be noted that extended warranties on consumer electronics have been consistently rated as one of the worst values for your dollar year in and year out by Consumer Reports. There's a reason why employees are forced to push them on you at every opportunity, and it's because those warranties have the highest profit margin of anything they sell. They aren't doing it out of the goodness in their hearts. ;)

To the OP: Sorry you seem to have have a bit of bad luck with your PS3.

As for me, I have been playing FFXI on the 60 Gig PS3 since they first released the updates to allow FFXI to play on the PS3 and I have had no trouble whatsoever.

You should know that I have been knon to play FFXI on my PS3 all day (about 14 hours or so) very often.

Take care of your stuff, clean it, ventilate it and all should be well.Smiley: smile

The PS3 is about 1 to 1.5 inches taller than the 360 w HDD attached.

Thank you for your condolences. After hearing from some of you, my fears of playing FFXIV for hours on end have been diminished, for the most part. I'm still a little weary of leaving my PS3 on for 3.5 years, as I did with my PS2, but it may have to be done for all of the afk bazaaring that I do. Since the game won't require a disc to play, I don't think I should have issues.

On a side note...
When I sent my PS3 60 GB in for repairs, the lady at the UPS desk was surprised to see I was sending it off. "I don't see many PS3's shipped back," she said, "but we get a lot of XBOX 360's."
Basically confirming that I was just an unlucky pup.
The warranty saved my rear, though. I'd still recommend the warranty to anyone who can afford the extra dough.

Now, just to figure out how to install a 500 GB memory uprade into my two PS3's?
I don't have a clue how to do it. Maybe I'll give Sony a call, but if anyone has any advice, I'll gladly become all ears.

Oh for the record my 360 has been on for roughly 20 hours now as I've been reinstalling and updating ffxi.
It hasn't broke down, but I will admit my room is like 35°c right now...

It's a shame there are no trophies, but I like the game anyway.
If they ever add trophies, I hope they will add a trophy for a headshot at over a mile away :) (In the mission where you get stuck with infinite respawns each turn, two behemoth tanks to destroy AND snipers at the **** cliffs on the other end of the zone, taking out those snipers ASAP is important ;)

Stop handing over free money to companies for mostly useless extended warranties... read the research out there on this. Extended warranties are typically useless, it's why they are always so happy to push that **** on you. Stop giving in. The changes of your PS3 breaking down in the warranty period is so low that its silly to pay an extra 13-16% for the extended warranty.
