Playable Gria... looks likely? Moogles and Black People?Follow

I know some people have mentioned a desire for a playable Gria race as pure speculation, but has anyone else noticed what appears to be a Gria in the teaser logo art? Second character from the left, right next to the Mithra-esque character.

http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/

You could of course make the case that it's simply an Elvish character with some sort of horn equipment (or something behind it), which is in essence what a fully clothed Gria would look like, but it seems much more likely to me that it's a Gria.

Now, I'm not particularly a fan of FFTA races or the games in general, but Gria are my favorite of those. I just hope that they don't make M and F only races as they did with XI, so I'd be expecting a "Male Gria." Same for Mithra and Viera really.

And as you'll see me say over and over (in a vain effort to catch the eye of someone in development), I'm really hoping for playable Moogles and Black People. Alright, that bears explanation... not black people (though those should certainly get some game representation as well), but whatever the **** black mages like Vivi, and Dark Knights from FFT are.

I'm open to a better or more accurate term (maybe the original Japanese?) for what to call that kind of race. As far as I know there's nothing in the NA FF lore that indicates a good name, though you could certainly make up some good ones.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Hey Kachi!

I know you remember me :3 Missed you! ...Not really! :D
Yah, i want new races too but i'm frankly getting tired of checking the official site everyday in the hopes that SE didn't leave us high and dry like they did with ff13 but... guess what?!

THEY DID!

Wish there was someone on the inside who would just leak some info or something. I've been daydreaming about what races could be in ffxiv and all kinds of stuff and i'm really getting annoyed -__-

Edit: After staring at the concept art over n over, I kept thinking too myself.. "i know this is a gria! But where are the awesome dragon wings?!". I'm probably wrong because this idea is wierd... But if you look at the shoulders of the Gria... It looks like the top of the wings is folded over her shoulders 0__0. Loook!

Yah yah it could be a cape but it's not connected to anything... AND the ends are pointy. They even look leathery. If you're not sure what i'm talking about... Look at the triangle shaped things on each side of the gria's upper chest. I really think they are wings folded down... I just don't know why the artist wouldn't just draw obvious wings... But this is SE here.. They don't know what their fans want.

Ah, looks like the Gria has already been mentioned some pages back. Sorry for the repost on that.

Maybe they're not really horns. Maybe he's just standing in front of something. It's not exactly clear.

Or perhaps the horns were included just to make us talk and see our thoughts so Squenix could scour the message boards and get feedback without actually having to ask for it.

I'm pretty sure Vivi's race is actually called a Black mage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_of_Final_Fantasy_IX#Vivi

And that would be awesome if they were put in as playable characters. Though I doubt they would as there's not much room for customization except for clothing and eye color maybe.

Vivi spoilers:

Vivi is actually a life like doll that has had a soul placed inside of it. Cardians from Windurst are pretty close in concept to this.

i believe there are no male viera. every game that had the viera race showed no males whats so ever. From FFTA to FF12 adding them now would leave us with a few questions. for starters where do they go after there born? y can't they live among the females? why havent they showed us them b4?

mithra & galka seem like there in the same boat.

None of the FF games are tied to each other. If they brought in male Viera to this one it has absolutely nothing to do with any previous appearances of Viera.

ummm ya a few FF's are tied together

FFTA, FFTA2 and FF12 are tied together.
there also the only FF games to have viera and those other races in them.
the fact that the viera race is only found in Ivalice makes it VERY UNLIKLY that they would show up in ff14.

no other FF game that i can think of that unique races that showed up in other FF games.

[edit] oops
they also said ff11 and ff14 are linked together

For one FFT FFTA and FF12 all merely used the same name of the world. Unfortunatly in FF12 they reused the races from FFTA aswell which was a pity. But I digress to my second point. The fact that the Devs specifically said that there is ABSOLUTELY no connection between FF11 and FF14 not even the races are exactly the same.

[EDIT] The only Final Fantasy games that are truly tied together are FFX and FFX-2.

Well, it's pretty apparent that SE is willing to bend the "rules" on races, which is an intelligent business move. Male Mithra seem near inevitable (high demand was apparent even in FF11), and Male Viera are completely possible if Viera are on the table at all. I fully expect on the order of 10 races to choose from given that this is a next gen MMO and there are many older games that offer that many or more.

He was in FF9, but when they used the same "race" for Dark Knight in FFT, it kind of identified the race as its own kind(even though they're obviously still humans in those games). Now that that design has been used both in various job roles (FFT) and has been defined as a unique race (FF9), I think there's plenty of justification to define it as a new race in FF14. Further, I'm sure that there are many players who would love to play it, it belongs in the FF world, and it would be relatively simple to implement (probably more so than any other race). As you pointed out, there's not much to customize, though the girls do have hair in FFT. Head and eye shape and eye color would probably be the biggest (re: only) other things. Though I guess guys could get a hair option as well.

Think I'll do up a poll for it.

that's actually incorrect. FFT and FFXII both use the same world and same world settings, and thus the same races, they are just set on a different timeline.

the original concept of FFXI had tarutaru as the blackmage race, that is, black skin and yellow eyes

They later became mandragora.

Hm, that's interesting. I've never heard that. I think they should definitely revisit the idea then. Mandragoras are... nice? But they're really no replacement.
