If gear or really good rewards came from a PvP like that it would be easy to take advantage of that system. Like alliances letting each other win then taking turns to get the rewards, like people letting others kill them in return the other person doing the same. I just think it makes more sense getting the real rewards off a mob or an mob event, then off regular people. Regular people can find ways to easily manipulate such systems. PvP in an FF MMo should also just be a side note, with no real rewards but maybe titles and such. This gives people that want to play it a chance to PvP, but doesnt make anybody do it, because they want such items. PvE should be "forced" upon players because the game is PvE in main focus which was already stated.

One thing is that 1v1 pvp will never be balanced, ever. This is a unfounded complaint by a lot of people. Of course Mr. Warrior with 2 axes is going to romp all over your whitemage with banish. The problem with WoW (and a lot of other pvp systems) is it seems to follow a Rock, Paper, scissors system that no one enjoys.

Another problem (which was really evident in WoW) would be gear scaling. If pvp is balanced in 1.0 it might not be in 1.5. This is because some skills, and classes, will do better as gear gets better. It's pretty difficult to regulate this outside of constant updates and minute changes (something Square Enix really never did that often).

But it would be nice for something other than ballista or brenar or whatever that's called. On pvp gear. I think it's perfectly fine, really it's quite easy to change the actual gear around to useful in only pvp. Like in RO gear might of been +10% defense against demi-humans. Which was a huge + in pvp, but not all that useful in several spots in pve.

I can only see a small fraction of players (probably the same people who download bots) doing this. If the PvP isnt made to feel like grind than people wont do it.

FFXI problems were:-

1) the effort required to get ready for ballista, travelling to/from, getting gear etc. If (like in WOW) I could activate a "join battlefield" from anywhere at anytime and have the fight commence when there is enough people on both sides then PvP would have happened more.
2) Doing Ballista had no point - there were no rewards.
3) Ballista had no part to the lore/story. The factions had been at war with each other but everyone was best of mates now and if you won/lost who cared? In WOW, the 2 factions cant communicate with each other, they cant enter each others cities - they trully are at war. This gives playing pvp for your faction pride and hatred for the others.

If PvP was storyline related then it would appeal to me, but as an optional recreational activity no thanks, just not my thing at all.

Of course it shouldn’t be rewarded gear wise or any kind of reward that will have an impact on the game. Ballista is a simple way for FFXI to cater to some of the players that wants to enjoy PvP for the sake of PvP, not to make it a fulltime occupation such as in WoW or other games that have PvP system. Since FFXI has no real PvP system as other games have you can’t implement PvP gear or rewards without having a solid PvP system. I think SE was generous enough to give FFXI ballista since Final Fantasy was and never will be about PvP.

Maybe put them into a minigame that resembles something like DOTA when it's still so popular ?

Some minions will be constantly fighting the opposing team/faction, while players get to do their own contributions towards victory.

Though I'm not a fan of DOTA, but maybe I've heard it so much from my friends which suggest how it may just work out.

Of course it would be cheap of the developer to do something too similar, but it may serve as a reference point....

Personally, to make a nice summed up tidy post: I hope they take a lot of elements of PvP from WAR. It was by far the best PvP style I had partaken in and rewarded you well for doing it. ****, they could even take the public quest options from the game that were equally as fantastic.

However, theres pretty much no chance in **** that will happen though - it would require you to be able to play beast men (which inherently is a fantastic idea) and pit yourselves against each other.

Chances are, we're going to get another incredibly bland version of FF11 PvP.

For a while the only reason I really played was for ballista... It was my favorite in-game activity.

I wish they'd allow agreed dueling, where it askes both players if they want to fight or not.

I think the ballista system was FINE but to keep people interested they should offer better rewards. Maybe PvP should be a viable way of leveling your character?

NO. Because then you'd have to balance classes for PvP. NO.

I hate pvp and I'd rather not have any pvp. One of the things thats so refreshing to me about ffxiv is that SE said pvp isnt going to play a major role. THANK GOD finally an mmo dev thats not trying to shove pvp down to my throat. PVP killed my interest in Aion and in DCUO both games try to force you to pvp as part of your normal questing and leveling experience I wont play the. PVP is great for people who like to pvp in mmos (and god knows why its always a horrible gear check and ruins class balance) but it seems devs are forgetting about the droves of pve players. As I said Id personally perfer to see NO PVP or pvp in a very marginalized minor way like a totally optional minigame that doesnt reward you with anything major.

[quote]The interviewer also brought up PKing and PvP, to which the developers responded they were considering options for the latter. They explain that while the game will involve cooperation, this does not necessarily always mean party vs. monster. Still, they say PvP will more likely take a shape similar to Final Fantasy XI, and they seem to shy away from allowing players to simply fight and kill each other anywhere, worrying it could lead to monopolization of content.

Wow, I find that incredibly depressing...
