Spell/Ability cutscenes during battle getting weaker?Follow

As FF games keep progressing, SE developers are losing their conservative style in certain aspects. Evidently, the magic cutscenes not only have been losing their incredible visuals but keep getting shorter and insignificant. I think it's time for SE to start bringing back ideas or concepts that had always been part of the series and believe FFXIV would be a great start. I mean, can you imagine bringing back spells like Ultima? Please don't get me wrong, I just enjoy being a BLM so much and I'm sure I'm not speaking for my self. I apologize in case this topic has been previously discussed.

Spells can only be so big and flashy before they become annoying and a detriment to the rest of the party.

And yet at no point in it's history did a Final Fantasy game have magical attacks with animations as incredible as Golden Sun's...

:(

More detailed animations for spells and abilities seems like a great idea. I would give them up for less lag in the game though.

You are certainly right. After so many battles; even great cutscenes can get annoying, but there is much that can be improved though. I was very disappointed with the spells in FFXI.

Really? Hate to hear that. I really liked the spell effects in FFXI.

FFXI magic spell animations were meh, imo. It's sad that FFIV had better animations, and that game was released for a 16-bit Super Nintendo. SE must be well aware of this, but are they willing to do anything about it?

One of the problems is that it was an online game designed for the ps2. I think everyone LOVES fancy spell animations like that in Grandia 2 (I mean Dragon Zap, who dosen't want that?) One thing is that the battle system would have to be different for such dynamic effects. One thing about MMOs is you want to have seamless gameplay. Now I do agree that they should make the spells look better, in all honesty they were bland in FFXI.

This. Spell effects in single player games and spell effects in MMOs are scaled accordingly. There are no spell or ability cutscenes in MMOs, because there are more than one person playing and they are simply not practical for multiplayer enviroments. In addition, the spells were not especially flashy due to lack of processing power in the PS2 and a dated engine.

This is not an especially hard concept to grasp.

Spell effects in XI were more or less exactly the right size you want for MMOs, in terms of distractablity.

I'm confused, OP, you want Ultima to fill the ******* screen of everyone in your general vicinity? Why can't it be a visually impressive giant magical explosion or something? Do you want to have spell 'cutscenes' or do you just want flashier spells, which is already obviously going to happen as the entire game is running on a much more powerful engine?

If you are talking about bigger, better looking spells... I'm all for it. The spell can get better looking without being too much of a distraction. However, the way you say cutscene makes me think of the summoning in other final fantasy games. I know it was cool to see your monster come up and roar, ripping a chunk of ground and seeing the chaos of it all, but you can't stop the battle in order to play a cutscene anytime anyone does anything... that would just be annoying.

Yes, tell SE to implement more Ark and Eden animations for every spell in in FFXIV.
