Sorry, I'm on a topic-spree today. I have a bit of free time at work, so I'm spending it on here! It's ok, I love you guys too. Anyway, what do you think the gear system will be like, slots-wise? Will we have: head, shoulders, torso, gloves, legs, feet, rings, earrings, main hand, off hand, ranged, etc.? Or do you think they'll take a new approach? What slots would you like to see altogether? Should there be separate slots for things like 'shirts' and 'tabbards' a la WoW?

The slots I'd like to see are:

- Head
- Neck (...because characters have necks)
- Torso (with shoulder upgrades)
- Gloves
- Back
- Waist
- Legs
- Boots
- Main hand
- Off hand
- Ranged
- 1 pair of earrings
- 1 or 2 ring slots
- 1 or 2 accessory slots

I could handle tabbards having a slot as well, so that link shells could customize something and have people represent. Alternately, I'd like to see people be able to color/detail their armor so that link shells could be represented that way too!

edit - added neck slot. forgot necks even existed. Thanks skeptic

edit - added back slot. I'm so good at this.

I wouldn't mind the addition of tabards, or a similar system.

I've always found they were a nice option to have. You don't HAVE to use them. But if you did, it makes it easy to identify at a glance what guild/linkshell you belong to. And if the game offers a variety of tabards beyond the guild/linkshell tabard, it offers a nice way to try and unify the appearance of your armor, if it does not match well.

I'd be happy if I didn't feel it necessary to swap 10-12 pieces of gear for every last ability I use.

How about cosmetic slots for jewelry and cloth. Would definitely spice up your character and bring some income to some professions. ^-^

Ammo slot perhaps?

Maybe a slot for everyone to carry an instrument and/or harvesting tool?

i would like to be able to hold a staff as a secondary weapon while still useing a main weapon and i'm not talking about dual wield. Like having a vulcan's Staff equip as a war for extra stats while still using great axe.

you're thinking in terms of ffxi in that aspect, we haven't any information that dictates that there will even be something similar to the elemental staves and their function.

Doesn't make alot of sense to be able to have a staff on your back and use your greataxe. I see what you're getting at, it would be more interesting just have additional gear slots for stat boots outside of armor. I think there should be slots for aesthetic items that do nothing. It would make it interesting, i'm not talking about tabards, something else please :D

Id like to see a Pouch Belt system for using items in battle. Maybe at first you can find a one pouch belt and get better and better ones, up to maybe five. If you want to use an item while in combat, such as a health or a mana potion, or a grenade type thing, or whatever! It must be in one of the pouches, and you're unable to add new items to pouches while in combat.

Adds a bit of dimension and tactics to combat, as well as rewarding preparation and forethought!

Your topic title is gear innovation so I'm gonna jump on this like a lion on a zebra and be a broken record here: They better ditch the idea that gear is so tiered that it only becomes a visual flag for what level and class you are. It's practically an archaic and ironic system that an MMO would go through the trouble of having equipment visually represented on your character and then make the game in such a way that everyone at your level is going to have to wear the exact same armor, detail for detail, unable to change a single pixel about it.

Ultimately it just works completely against character distinction, so here's hoping this isn't something that returns.

I mean, ****, there are ways of making equipment that is a visual representation of your job and level but that also allows customization and character distinction.

And hey, if we get options for customizations and actually get some control over appearances, the more visible slots of armor we have the better.

Instead of tabards for linkshells, I think they should have the things that the main character has in Last Remnant. I don't really know what you would call it...a belt attachment, or a sash maybe. I think being able to customize one of those would be really cool for linkshells.

Since no one's said it, and this is purely aesthetic, why not have a slot for sheaths? The asence of weapon (or at least blade casings) has been one thing that always bothered me about FFXI. People walk around with unsheathed razor-sharp katanas magically attached to their hips. Not only does it look ridiculous, it's just plain dangerous! Imagine strapping a big-*** sword to your side and walking into a crowded area such as infront of an AH... somebody's bound to get cut. It's actually kinda funny because whenever someone ingame pulls a sword "out" to fight, it makes that metallic sound of being pulled from an enclosure, but there is not enclosure... WHY?? Sure, great swords, axes, and scythes that are strapped to the back braveheart-style look cool like that and don't need to be sheathed, but damnit, every other blade should be covered.
I can't be alone on this.

I know this is not going to happen, but what I would like to see is something different. I would like to see a system kind of like the Dot Hack games (a game based on a person playing an MMO, or something like that). By this I mean the main character picked out what he wears at all time during character creation. This is how you would look and there would be no “Head” or “Body” armor to switch all the time. There would be things such as accessories and weapons that you could switch, and the weapons would be different in appearance as you change, but you would still look the same.

Now I’m not saying this is going to be the best system, but it would make things so much simpler. You would know your friends right away because of how they look. You won’t have to worry about too many gear swaps. You’d get to customize your appearance to be completely different from anyone else.
AND there would most likely be a place to change your appearance at some point if you get tired of what you look like.
As for the main question here, I would like to see:

Weapon/Shield/Sub Weapon
Rings
Earrings
Neck
Back
Trinket
Belt

I think it would just keep things simple and not have people worry so much about getting several pieces of gear to fill a decently large amount of slots.

So long as it didn't cause too much lag in crowded areas, I'd like to be able to see everything that we can equip, especially capes and rings.
