I can't see where your coming from with that statement. Vertical progression does not favor choice. If you want to do old content, nobody else does. You're forced to go with the mainstream. Let's say you didn't want to do the new content, say you liked what you were doing, let's use camping kings in ffxi as an example. Einherjar comes along, you can still do kings if you want and you don't have to do einherjar. Whereas in WoW when BC came along nobody would go do the level 60 raids with me anymore because they were worthless, nobody would farm rep with me in old areas because "it was worthless".

That's the problem with being stuck in the past...you place yourself in the minority. There's nothing stopping you from exploring old content aside from whether or not you can find a group to do it with. That's a restriction created by the players, not the developer. When you start asking the developer to introduce restrictions by emphasis on horizontal progression and then add in the restrictions created by the players you end up with a dead game. Kinda like FFXI.

I don't think I'm placing myself in a minority, but even if I am it's not as important as what I'm trying to get across. It's not a restriction by the players and only the players. It's a restriction by the players set forth by what the developers have done. The developers made it so that there's no reason for the people who only care about gear, the majority, to go through old content. It's not just one party who's at fault. With horizontal progression, I can't honestly imagine restrictions set by the players. Sure, there are going to be some.. but there's not going to be as many. Some of the staples in ffxi are gone, there's no trial of passage for whm anymore (Lord of Onzozo torama camp), but a large, large majority of the content is still used. That's not what I'd call dead. FFXI is just .. masochistic at times. That has to do with other faults in the game though, long travel times when you're starting out; hard to solo when you're starting out, etc. It's unfriendly towards new players. The beauty is when you can push past that and experience what the game has to offer. Were you able to get through CoP? I can easily say that the combined experience of "story" from every single minute I played WoW couldn't even match the experience of a single CoP chapter of story.

Now I'm just rambling.. orz lol.

I personaly would like gear swapping in ffxiv, as it was something that ffxi had that was unique. What's wrong between switching from haste set to weapon skill set? what you people want to weaponskill in your haste sets? It was something that gave players the boost in particular fights. Would it have been better for merit parties to be stuck meriting in their ws sets? because "oh, that niffty byakko leg piece you got there, you shan't use it because you are in combat" give them credit where it's due and that personaly, i liked about ffxi, it's a unique mmo that stood out of the rest and i mean the rest because i have looked around. Gear swap was a positive thing. I hope it comes back, i for one would not like being stuck in an armour during a fight by mistake and not be able to change it because some people can't hit their macro buttons.

The blinking effect is extremely annoying but then i am sure any1 who has experienced ffxi, it'd have been something they have gotten used to, thousand of things are worst than gear swapping blink in ffxi, like ssalvage drop rate. crafting QQs & etc..

Let's just wait to see what beta has to offer and go from there.

as long as it is possible to do it, people will do it, and then people will laugh at other people who don't gear swap and then it will be so common it will be expected, and therefore you must gear swap...

i don't think it was ever MEANT to necessarily be a major game mechanic in xi either, but like NIN it was too late to change, and if people can't gear swap then people will cry... like if NIn couldnt tank.

It is kind of hilarious how people first take what they get, then examine it, then make the most of it, then complains if it changes mechanics. It is like adapting to the situation is a one time deal. Doing it twice is too much to ask for.

What NIN became may not have been SEs intention, but as far back as I can remember gear swapping was always part of the game, in fact you just need to check out the zilaart gear to see that. If SE honestly didn't think Hetacomb gear wouldn't be used for what its used for now they must really suck at predicting their own games future lol. Although gear swappings 'emphasis' really didn't hit its stride till the unofficial windower hit with the increased macro line space. It was around that time where the emphasis on gear swaps got out of hand by the more 'elite' parts of the community and it just trickled down from there till what we got now.
