AoC must be really desperate. Here is their offer...

Quote:
Get a level 50 character

All players with characters already above level fifty now have a one time option to create another character that starts life at level fifty. This character can be of any class you want to make so you can jump straight into a different class without having to go through the early leveling stages. This is available to all players from here on in after they reach the milestone of leveling a character to level fifty. An emtpy character slow is required to create this character

I'm just amazed they would put forth such an offer. What do you all think about this? I find it kinda insulting.

I want to know what happened to an xbox 360 version of AoC, which was promised. I heard a lot of the servers got merged and they wasn't doing to good so I will just take a guess and say, its not coming to the xbox 360 anymore. Now anyway to get on topic, ya I think its kind of sad to get a free level 50 character just because you leveled one character to 50.

I don't think they really care. If they were serious about a console version, wouldn't you think they would have had one available during NA launch or 3-4 months after? Beside they seem too busy with creating some new "Free to Play" craptastic MMOs.

Funcom has revealed further details on the status of its free-to-play MMO plans, noting upcoming significant development milestones and project scope.

While a bulk of the word count in its latest financial report was dedicated to reassurances about the state of the big-budget fantasy MMO Age of Conan, the Norwegian developer and publisher was sure to outline its short- and long-term goals with the two current free-to-play projects it has in development, as well as mention that more are on the way.

As mentioned on Funcom's previous fiscal quarter report, one of the company's free-to-play games is browser-based, the other Java-based. A projected final release date was given for neither game, but it was noted that the Java team is currently conducting focus testing and will be delivering a vertical slice this summer, while the browser-based team has a combat milestone due this summer.

The browser-based MMO is apparently targeted at the "gamer demographic," and has a 14-member team in place. The Java-based MMO, on the other hand, is aimed at a younger-skewing demographic and is in development with a 17-member team. Screenshots from the Java-based game have been embedded in this article.

Funcom sees growth in free-to-play database-driven games like Travian and the Gameforge library, as well as in youth-oriented MMOs such as Club Penguin, Wizard101, and FreeRealms.

I think there are far more significant things to be insulted by than an MMO developer allowing players to create one alt at an advanced level.

AoC is just one of many recent MMOs that didn't live up to the pre-release hype. There could have been a number of factors that led to the decision to allow the one-time alt boost that only the devs and some of the people who play AoC would know about.

I hear they had to release early cause they were running out of money, so the low levels were great but past 20 was pretty bad. And so many bugs. I don't think they had a working AH for the first month. Lots of problems with AoC.

It's free, You simply need to use one of your open character slots to use it. I also know that all people with characters above 50 get an extra character slot too.

Still each player can only do it once (per an account) so they need to make it count.

No sense they said all along the xbox 360 version will come significantly later then the release. Then an interview some months ago, still says an xbox 360 version is still in the works. I asked about it because I know players that play it and they said it was going bad so I was just wondering if they canceled the xbox 360 version. If they didn't care about it, then why dont they just say its canceled, so people can know that its officially cancelled.

I kind of think the enormous amount of negative word-of-mouth they got at launch might be part of the delay. They're better off polishing what they've got and having the existing playerbase turn around and praise the game en masse for the strides Funcom has taken than to invest the $$$ porting a game that was almost universally heralded as one of the worst and most over-hyped MMOs in years.

AoC was such a huge disappointment, in that the first 20 levels were quite literally the best I have ever experienced in any MMO. The atmosphere was astounding, the map design hugely detailed and cleverly planned, classes seminally balanced and it was all wrapped up in fantastic voice acted scenes.

And then you get out of Tortage, and realise that 4 of the past 5 years made the first 20 levels, and the remaining 60 levels are simply tacked on and deliver nothing that was promised.

Oh the huge manatee!

Well, it isn't such an unthinkable step, it's just taking it further than what Blizzard did with the "hero classes". So far there is only one hero class, the darkdeath knight, but they said they would introduce new ones, seeing how they were a success. You need to reach 55 with any class and you can create DKs (restricted to one per server, though) which start at lvl55.

Leveling is not a challenge in that game, so really nothing to be insulted about.

Likewise, tortage, while awesome and well designed, becomes annoying going through the same story for the 3rd + time.

I only got as far as the first 20 levels. I agree it was absolutely great for the first 20 levels, unfortunately I can't comment on the rest.

Yes, and then everyone and their mother created a Death Knight and flooded end game with them. It's hard to get into a guild as a Death Knight now, because of the sheer number of them.

It's a really fun class to play and nothing like FF's Dark Knight (It really does feel more like a nod to Death Knight lore in books like Dragonlance, so not sure why you did the little cross out thingy for dark as if WoW somehow copied an SE original idea), but it's hard to be a career DK at this point and it would have been better for the game overall if they didn't start you at 55 already.

It's a good idea to make a quick buck, but as far as actually keeping people's interest, it was a poor strategy.

It seemed pretty obvious that there were massive balance issues even in the first 20 levels. I remember my guy had about half a dozen self buffs which, taken together, took me half a minute to apply, and improved my performance about 3-4% total. It's a such a great example of focusing on feature count instead of feature quality.

"This class should have a bunch of buffs and pacts"

"What will these buffs do?"

"I don't know, we'll figure that out later."

The talent trees (probably called something else, but they were functionally the same thing as WoW talent trees) had tons of choices which didn't actually do anything. At launch, I'd say at least 50% of my character's "talents" were broken or significantly bugged.

****, they had a massive undetected bug that caused female characters to do less damage (20-25% less) across the board. I guess they were so fixated on making sure the boobies looked good that they forgot to actually test the game.

The game looked good, and they tried some innovating things with the combo system, but for the most part none of it worked at release.
