Something I'd like to see...Follow

I think this was posted somewhere else, but I don't remember if it was here. Basically, I'd like each class to have a few "rare" skills/spell. Something along the lines of "Oh, me and my LS just killed Tiamat, and now my Blm buddy can cast Meteor".Well, Not exactly like that, but something along those lines. Maybe a quest line involving a solo BC and your reward is casting Ultima, or using Tachi: Pwnage.

I also think it'd be nifty if there were two "rare" skills, and taking one locked the other. For instance, my **** Samurai picked up "Tachi: Pwnage", and now he can't learn "Tachi: Limp Noodle" 'cause he'd look girly. And someone else's not so **** Samurai learned "Tachi: Limp Noodle" 'cause he thought "Tachi: Pwnage" would cause him to break a nail. But at the same time, they should be useful in each situation. Tachi: Pwnage could remove that pesky mountain blocking you from your quest objective, whereas Tachi: Limp Noodle would amuse the townsfolk which would complete another quest.

After reading this, I guess what I'm looking for are merited job abilities that involved a quest or maybe killing an HNM. Just something to distinguish between my **** Samurai, and all those DOMARUUUUUUUUUUUU sam's abilities, aside from raw damage, I'd like to have two of the same classes, each with a unique ability that shows they had worked for something. Something flashy would be cool.

Also, in my defense, this post probably isn't very well hashed out, but it's 4:58 AM, and I'm trying to finish my download without falling asleep.

It sounds like a good idea. In reality, unless they were the exact same ability with different animations, it would only be a matter of time before people figure out which ability is technically better, and every single person would be using that skill which is better, and anyone who chose the other skill gets made fun of and mocked.

Exactly what I was thinking as I was reading the OP, it sounds a lot like merit point abilites, in fact it is exactly like those just you get them in another way.

You're right for the most part, but I wouldn't say they'd have to be the same with different animations. For example: You had the choice between a fire based weapon skill and a ice based one of equal strength. You can see where that'd be equal right? It would really depend on the mobs you're fighting in that case. I kinda like the OP's idea though. It would add some flavor.

Like any quest or mission with optional rewards, then.

Now that I've had some sleep and some Dr.Pepper, I can flesh out my idea a bit more. I like the idea of two weaponskills having the same damage, but being different elements, however, I'd like to see something a bit more unique. Maybe the fire weaponskill opening a unique skillchain that can only be bursted by the coresponding unique magic spell. Or in addition to being fire damage, maybe put on a special debuff that the ice doesn't carry, and vice versa.

And yeah, I said in the original post that I guess they're like quested merit abilities. In FFXIV, when I pop Warrior's Charge, instead of someone saying "Oh, he's got some merits" I'd like people to say "Oh geez, that guy has Warrior's Charge, he's done xxx questline. I'ma look out for this guy next time I merit".

What it all boils down to is, I want people to see your achievements not only by gear, but by the skills you've obtained. Being 75 and merited doesn't mean much in FFXI, but I think it should mean something more than it does. (And I also realize that at one point, being 75 was something special. I also understand that after time, the awesomeness of having a high level/merits fades away.)

Pretty much. Just saying, it's probably not the best thing in the world to do that with skills.

So instead of grinding xp you do some quest (which may involve grinding, who can say) to unlock those same abilites?

Guild Wars had this for most of the abilities. In order to get several abilities you'd have to complete missions to reach new areas that teach those abilities. It was mostly a chore and annoyance.

Limiting it to a few abilities would limit the annoying part, but the tasks shouldn't be too difficult to complete. I think the quests should be more of a story element explaining how your character came to learn the skill rather than simply a challenge and reward.

Agreed. My favorite job Quest to do in Final Fantasy XI was the Samurai Quest. It had a lot of story to it, which was what made it my favorite.

I hope more Quests in the game have a stronger story element to them. I really enjoyed it when I saw it.
