Ps3 80 or 160 gbFollow

#1 Jun 29 2009 at 2:27 PM Rating: Decent
I was just wondering, before I make a purchase, would it be better to get an 80gb or 160gb ps3 for FFXIV? How much space should I prepare for the game and future updates?

Thanks

A 40GB would do just fine I think. I purchased a 80GB for Final Fantasy, I wouldn't even be able to fill up a 80GB Hard Drive in this life time myself, lol. You have to be reasonable when thinking how big this game will be, and I don't see it being more than 20GB.

Just my opinion. Be sure to get a Fan with your PS3 too!

WTF would you need 160GB for anyway? A lot of places are pulling the 160GB PS3s off the shelves, including Wal Mart.

WoW takes 12 GB right now. I would say FFXIV will take at least that much and probably upward of 20-25 GB considering what they have said about system requirements.

a used 40gb or 80gb would be fine. The primary reason?

It's an easy upgrade.

PS3's run on standard 2.5" laptop hard drives, you can buy them cheap online or at best buy, and install it in minutes. I have a 60gb that i plan on backing up my saves and upgrading the HDD for FFXIV. I'm probably going to get a 250gb solid state drive, some tests show that solid state drives run a bit faster on certain applications on ps3, including downloadable content installations.

This. A 40GB would be fine if you're looking to save money.

I bought my 60 gig back in the day mostly becaue it had:

A) the Ps2 emotion chip for full ps2 backwards compatibility.

B) 4 Usb ports

C) All the memory card slots that the newer versions don't have.

You know what the first thing I did? swap out the HD with a new 200gig laptop HD I bought for $40 off a friend. These things come with instructions on replacing the HD's when you get them (if not you can look up the ps3 manual section online for replacment). If the 20gig version has the same bells and whisltes as the 160 gig version then save youself a ton of money and pick up a cheap laptop HD youself and drop it in. No it does not void any sort of warrenty in doing so and you do not have to open up the "guts" of your ps3 to do it. Open up a side slot, pull out the old one, drop in the new one, boot it up, formatt, done.

Even after years of updates to the game, there's no way that FFXIV will take up a full 80GB HDD, so that would serve you fine if all you're planning on is FFXIV.

If you plan on doing more with your PS3, then you might want to consider upgrading the HDD. There's a lot of games that have mandatory installs (up to ~5 GBs), Game saves, Download games/demos, and any movies/music/photos you want tot store can take up a lot of room.

Any 2.5 inch SATA laptop HDD will work fine, and it's a very easy upgrade to do.

I was going to buy a PS3 for FFXIV also and was wondering about game size. I am glad someone asked this question. Does a PS3 act like a computer in that the more stuff on the memory the slower it goes? Will a 160gb PS3 have less "lag" than a 80gb PS3?

I had an 80 GB and was down to about 20 GB left and upgraded to a 350 GB harddrive.

If you can get a good price on a HDD then just get the cheapest PS3 you can find and change out the HDD. Just be forewarned, the ***** that hold it are tight as ****.

Yes! but I have to have room for my secret tailless Galka Playpen photos.

....Actually, I have a 60 gig and I'm down to about 7 gigs available. I might as well go with a big HDD so I don't have to worry about it anymore.
