Cost for additional charactersFollow

One thing FFXI got wrong was to charge additional money for additional characters. I want FFXIV to have a set ammount to pay every month no matter how many additional characters you have. $12-$14 is a decent price range for this to work.

Well, compared to WoW's $15 (though you could get it as low as $13 if you payed more than 1 month at a time), FFXI's $13 was nice if you didn't need mules. But due to space and the way the AH works, you pretty much needed mules which took you over that $15. I too hope it's a straight cost with multiple free alts.

$15 a month for 3-4 slots sounds cool. That would be Main, with 2-3 Mules. I'd like to see that change also.

Mules should not exist period.

There is zero legitimate reason to force people to use mules by limiting inventory space harshly.

This thread discussed a lot concerning mules.

My own take on the whole thing:

The ability to create some alts should be free, but you should only get the ability to create one character per server. Mules should not be needed.

That's going a little too far, with no real reason behind it. It would be nice if they added mass storage systems for craft items though, to reduce the need for so many mules.

I had 3 mules one in each main city. I didn't mine paying the extra $1 per mule.

I really think the fee should be taken away. Even five characters a server would be very reasonable to me. There are a number of reasons why you would want to level another character and if you want to, you should be able to do so.

I have a lot of friends from my old server who plan on playing FFXIV. Why would I wish to make a character outside of my main server where they will not be? Having a second character on the same server would also open me up to having more crafting skills and other such things (if it follows a model similar to most p2p MMOs).

Reason why mules should be allowed and are needed is because some races are just better at certain jobs.

A tarutaru has a bigger MP pool. So if I wanted to play a mage job I would want a tarutaru character.

If I wanted a tank I would pick a hume or galka ect ect

That is reason enough to not charge extra money for more characters

Mules are useful anyway as you can position them in key major cities and save yourself a lot of travel sending things to different areas. I kinda like it from a roleplay perspective too because to me it's just like your main has a couple of civilian friends who handle the money side of the adventuring operation. It's like an Elvaan Warrior with a taru accountant lol.

I don't imagine there are too many out there willing to level up all new characters and do all the old missions/quests again just to be slightly better at a job then their main. But I'm sure there are some. Still, I'd prefer the difference between races be much smaller this time, so you can choose based on looks and not be penalized with half the jobs like Galka and Taru are.

In FFXI, no. We aren't talking about XI, we are talking about XIV which is something that a lot of people tend to forget in these forums. We have no idea what is in store as far as requirements for access to areas and etc. for the new game. If this time around we don't get forced through mission progressions that literally make you want to slice your wrists and make snow angels (I'm looking at you, CoP), and instead make challenging content that you can tackle with a couple friends... We might see people making multiple characters and specializing them.

It's not an entirely horrible idea, you know.

That isn't a mule, that's an alt.

You are mixing up the two terms.

A mule is a character created purely for a source for holding items because inventory space and Auction House access is heavily limited. A mule is a character that you create with the explicate intent not to play them, and just use them as an inventory/auctionhouse slave.

I'd love to see the races have different bonuses that have nothing to do with combat. Bonuses like "finds more gil on monsters" or "inherently better at this crafting ability" or "slight advantage in this minigame". There are so so so so so many other things to do besides fight, why not have the races be more successful at some of those things?

edit - but, as stated above, I agree with the notion that players 1) shouldn't have to pay for extra characters and 2) shouldn't be forced to create characters purely for inventory space.
