This has no direct connection in ffxiv, but there was a new interview that came out that lets you see what SE was thinking when creating a few bosses for ffxi. There might not be any direct connection between the interview and ffxiv, but i'm assuming some of the same people will be making some bosses for ffxiv, so in a small way it could be relevant. This is just a very interesting read...

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=18647

So just a few thngs I found interesting:

1. They take pride in how a boss they create is/if beaten, and they take pride when players beat it the "right way".

2. They was still making extremely long bosses (18 hour Pandemonium Warden before it was changed), and that it was intended. This just show me even this far into ffxi, they like the hardcore nature of it. No i'm not saying ffxiv will be this hardcore, but I'm just saying that they love the hardcore nature of bosses still this deep into ffxi.

3. When they test new bosses, they test it with testers that have the best gear in the game (they said relics and stuff). Also interesting how they tell one group the secrets and weaknesses and how to beat it and doesn't tell one group. Then they see how many times and with how many people it takes to beat the mob. Many people say this is retarded assuming people have relics and stuff, but I kind of like bosses to be bad ***. Maybe not like Av even tho he has been defeated, but pandemonium warden has also been defeated, so I like an extremely difficult boss, but not impossible.

There many other things interesting, but don't want to name them all, i'll be here all day long.

18 hour boss? That might work on a console game (and I have to admit I never did finish those last few bosses in FF12), but in an online game you can't really save and come back later. Yech.

I really hope they don't expect players in a raid/alliance to be wearing full best in slot gear/relics.

The idea would be to have the content tuned enough so above average gear is required, not best of the best only.

I mean seriously, how many relic weapons are on a server? 10-15? Is it reasonable to balance a boss against these weapons?

Remember that it's no longer 18 hours, and I doubt it'll ever be again either. The fights are actually quite fun with 2 hour time limit.

Also remember that if a guy named Daisuke Sase is making an event, be prepared to face something like this. That guy likes to torture players lol.

If it is meant as the final boss before shutting down the servers, then yes.
But 18 hours is to long, 5-6 hours at max.

even this is too long. I'd say three hours is the most you should spend on a boss if you are averagely equipped for it. The problem is not always time, but people lose concentration, get tired, and so on. More mistakes happen from fatigue than actual bad judgment calls.

How does that reminder go? Don't neglect your responsibilities, friends and family? Something like that?

That was always good for a laugh.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Kind of funny every game manual in the front says to play for 1 hour then take a 15 minute break before continuing, that's pretty much impossible in an MMO. Especially if you're in the middle of a fight.

18+ hour bosses would work if you could do it in chunks and save your progress. Like if the boss was an entire dungeon and just had many phases. You come in, beat him back to a certain point, and save your progress. Otherwise... yuck. I'd say the max duration I'd be willing to spend on even the most epic of fights is 2-3 hours.

They have said they want FF11 and FF14 to coexist, and that they want FF14 to be casual. Perhaps they intend to have FF11 continue, as something to cater to their hardcore MMO base, and FF14 to cater to their casual MMO base. Those who like both styles would play and pay for both games. Sounds like a good idea to me, for SE, at least.
